Abstract

Lancang Kuning University is an educational institution that strengthens the Riau Malay cultural identity through its architectural and interior elements. One part that reflects this identity is the lobi of the rectorate building, which functions as a guest reception center and a symbol of academic leadership. This study aims to analyze the perception of the use of Malay decorative motifs as a factor in shaping cultural identity in the interior design of the Unilak Rectorate lobi. The methodological approach used includes direct observation of Malay decorative elements and interviews to understand their influence on the user experience of the space. The results show that the applied Malay decorative motifs not only strengthen aesthetic and traditional values but also increase the sense of attachment to local culture. This research highlights that cultural elements in interior design are integral to the identity of educational institutions and provides insights into the role of spatial design in shaping users’ perceptions and experiences. The primary benefit of this research is to support the development of locally culture-based interior design that can enhance the university's image.

Abstract

“Mouthwashing” is a game that has achieved many prestigious awards and nominations just within a few months after its’ release on 24th September 2024. This horror game was conceptualized and written by Johanna Kasurinen which then got developed to a game by Wrong Organ Studio. While it’s nothing new, it’s still rare to find a female game creator and even rarer is when a game made by women has achieved as many awards as “Mouthwashing” had. This research is a critical reading of the female role in the game “Mouthwashing” and how a female’s view is applied in her works. This is qualitative research with the data taken from a game playthrough video and interview articles with Kasurinen. The main theory used for this research is the female gaze theory by Laura Mulvey. In the game, there’s only one female character named Anya whose role is quite significant both in gameplay function and the overall theme. Kasurinen herself had stated in interviews that she often looks back upon herself while writing characters that aren’t only not good, but also human. In conclusion, despite the strong female gaze aspect, the narration of the overall game doesn’t fit into the feminist category.

Abstract

Pixiu (貔貅) is one of the mythological creatures originating from Chinese culture, where this creature is believed to bring good luck, wealth and protection, in its development, there has been a change in form from a traditional sacred representation into a modern form such as Shenxing Pixiu (神行貔貅). Shenxing Pixiu itself is a Pixiu toy made by Shenxing Toys where this toy adapts the aesthetics of kawaii (cute). With the differences in this, it encourages a phenomenon, where the existence of this phenomenon encourages this research to be made, this research itself was made with the aim of analyzing the comparison of designs between traditional Pixiu and Shenxing Pixiu toys from the visual aspect, symbolic meaning and shifting functions in the context of popular culture. The research methods used include descriptive-qualitative analysis of design elements and literature studies. The results of this study indicate that Shenxing Pixiu can maintain the core values of traditional Pixiu but with a more commercial and entertaining approach, so that it is more easily accepted by the younger generation. These changes reflect the adaptation of traditional culture to the modern market without losing its original identity.

Abstract

Batik is an important cultural heritage of Indonesia, particularly in Java. Batik Kudus, crafted by local artisans, reflects the cultural richness of the Kudus region and is influenced by coastal batik styles. Each motif carries symbolic meanings that are closely tied to local traditions and values. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the symbolic meanings of Batik Kudus, focusing on how its motifs represent Javanese cultural knowledge through traditional clothing. The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between batik as an art form and the values of the Kudus community. Batik is not merely seen as fabric or decoration, but as a form of cultural expression that reflects experiences, beliefs, and social values. The findings show that Batik Kudus motifs reflect the identity, lifestyle, and worldview of the local people. These patterns are not only visually appealing but also rich in cultural and spiritual meaning. Thus, Batik Kudus functions as a living tradition—a medium through which the community preserves cultural heritage, tells their stories, and affirms their collective identity.

Abstract

Wayang legends are among the numerous aspects of Indonesian culture that are gradually being forgotten. One illustration is the Punakawan tale, which is significant in promoting moral principles and forming societal norms. The goal of this design is to encourage young people, both artists and the general public, to get interested in local culture. In order for local culture to survive through artistic creations that are current and captivating to the younger generation, it is hoped that artists will be motivated to study and investigate Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. This quantitative study employs the glass box technique approach with the goal of educating the next generation about the morals of Punakawan characters. A graphic novel book about the Punakawan narrative, which has been altered and infused with fantasy elements, is the outcome of this research. Combining narrative and illustration is a visual communication method that reinforces character qualities and makes reading more appealing to younger generations. It is anticipated that this strategy will make the Punakawan story more palatable and acceptable to Indonesia's youth of today, allowing it to be used as a character teaching tool.
