This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying skimming technique on Grade XI students’ reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XI, Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta: SMA) Methodist-7, which consisted of 60 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.89. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analyze showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 60 , t-observed value 3.71 > t-table value 2.00. Based on the reliability of the test, it was found that the test was reliable. The findings indicated that using Skimming Technique significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. So, English teachers are suggested to use Skimming Technique in order to improve students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Skimming Technique, Reading Comprehension, Experimental Research.

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement in writing report text through numbered heads together. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII/B at SMP SWASTA UPMI Medan that consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instrument for collecting quantitative data was a writing test and the instrument for collecting quantitative data included diary notes, observation sheets, interview and questionnaire sheets. Based on the writing test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In test I, the mean was 66,4375, in test II the mean was 78,125 and in test III the mean was 87,5625. Based on the observation sheets and questionnaire sheets, it was found that the teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interested in writing. The result of the research showed that Number Heads Together (NHT) significantly improved students’ achievement in writing report text. Key Words: Writing, Report, Number Heads Together.

ABSTRACT This study focuses on improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension by applying the Learning Together Method. This research was conducted with an action research design. The subject of this study was the first year IPA students at SMA Nur Azizi Tanjung Morawa. The total number of students was 32 students. This research was performed in two cycles and every cycle consisted of three meetings. The quatitative data was collected through a reading test and the qualitative data through diary notes, observation sheets, and interview. The reading test showed that the score of the students improved continuously from pre test through post test 1 and post test 2. The mean of the students’ score in pre test was 60,5. In post test 1, the mean increased to 69,4 and in post test 2, the score rose to 83. The diary notes, observation sheets, and interview indicated that the students were eager and more active during teaching and learning process in the second cycle than in the first cycle. It was found that teaching reading through the Learning Together Method improved students’ achievement. It is suggested that English teachers apply this method as one alternative in teaching reading comprehension. Key Words: Learning Together Method, Reading Comprehension, Students’ Achievement.

This study aims at investigating the effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. This study was experimental in nature. The population of this study was the first year students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjung Balai. The total number of the population was 280 students in seven classes. There were 60 students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using Task-Based Learning Method and control group was taught without using Task-Based Learning Method. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. To obtain test reliability, the writer applied the Pearson Product Formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.90. It was categorized as very high reliability. The data were analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that the t-observed value was higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with a freedom degree of 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there was a significant effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing procedure texts. ABSTRACT This study aims to find out the effect of Psychology Trait on Students’ Speaking Achievement. The population of the study was the second year students in the academic year 2011 / 2012 at SMP HKBP Medan in two classes with a total of 64 students. Ten students were selected by using random sampling technique. The first group (5 students) was the extrovert group, while the second group (5 students) was the introvert group. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaire and oral test. The data were analyzed by using the Kruskal Wallis Test. The result of the analysis showed that the H = X2 value was higher than chi square table value (4.81 > 3.94) at the level of significance 0.05 with a freedom degree of 10. It means that there was a significance effect of Psychology Traits on Students’ Achievement in Speaking. Key Words: Pschology Traits, Speaking, Introvert, Extrovert.

This study was aimed at finding out the effect of applying Venn Diagram Strategy on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This study was conducted with an experimental design. The population of this study was the first year students in the academic year 2012/2013 at SMK Prayatna-1 Medan. There were sixty students taken as the sample of the research. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group (30 students) as the experimental group and the second group (30 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by applying the Venn Diagram Strategy, while the control group was taught without the Venn Diagram Strategy. The instrument for collecting data was a multiple choice test which consisted of 40 items. To obtain test reliability, the researcher used the Kuder -Richardson (KR-21) formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.66. The data were calculated by using the t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that the t-observed (5.02) was higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that teaching reading comprehension through the Venn Diagram Strategy significantly affected reading comprehension. The objective of this study was to find out whether demonstration method has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing procedure texts. The population of the study was 90 third year students at SMP Negeri II Tambangan, in three classes. Sixty students were taken as the sample by using random sampling. The sample was divided in to two groups. Thirty students as the experimental group were taught by using a demonstration method and thirty students as the control group were taught by using a teacher’s method. The instrument used in this study was a writing test. To obtain test reliability, the Person Product Moment Formula was used and the calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.95. Then, after analyzing the data, it was found that the t-test was 3.33 with a freedom degree of 58 at the level significance (p = 0.05) = 2.000 meaning that t-test was higher than t-table (3.33 > 2.000). Based on the result, the Ha was accepted. The result suggested that the demonstration method had a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing procedure text. This study deals with the improvement of the vocational school students’ achievement through Project-Based Learning Method. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was a class in the second year student of SMK TKJ HARAPAN STABAT. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and the qualitative data were gathered by administering oral test and diary notes. The result of the quantitative data indicated that the score of the students improved from cycle I to cycle II with a pre-test mean of 59,5, the test of cycle I was 70, and the test of cycle II was 83,8. The result of the qualitative data indicated that the use of Project-Based Learning Method helped to improve the students’ achievement in speaking English. Students’ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Think Pair Share (TPS) was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VIII in Junior High School (SMP Bilang Huluh) Rantau Parapat. In the first evaluation (66,4375) increased to the mean of second evaluation (78,125) and the mean of third evaluation (87,5625). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students’ achievement is improved when thay are tought through TPS Method. Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Think Pair Share

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement in vocabulary by using Realia. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VII-1 at SMP.N.17 Medan which consisted of 38 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instrument for collecting quantitative data was a vocabulary test and the instruments for collecting qualitative data included diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview. Based on the vocabulary test, students’ score kept improving in every test and based on the diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview report, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in vocabulary. The result of the research showed that Realia significantly improved students’ achievement in vocabulary.
