Abstract

This was a research and development (R&D) study which aimed to evaluate the English summative test items based on revised Bloom’s taxonomy for grade VIII. This study focused on the developing the English summative test items according to the cognitive level of revised Bloom’s taxonomy for grade VIII at SMP Negeri 3 Tebing Tinggi. The data consist of the existing English summative test items which were directly collected from the English teacher due to analyze the proportion of cognitive level according to revised Bloom’s taxonomy. Based on the data analysis, the existing English summative test had not fulfilled the proportion of cognitive level according to revised Bloom’s taxonomy regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The inappropriate English summative test items were then developed according to the proportion demand and suitability to the syllabus and indicators. The results of the study are 30 developed English summative test items which had been validated by the experts and tested to 20 students due to get the reliability scores.

Abstract

This study is a qualitative descriptive. This research was conducted by direct observation of English teachers. This research was conducted by direct observation of the teacher in the classroom and by interviewing. Researchers studied four English teachers and gave the same four questions to each teacher. Indicators of success include three English teachers use cooperative strategy. The results of this study showed that three out of four English teachers who are in SMA Negeri 1 OnanRunggu using cooperative strategies in the teaching of narrative text. That means that 75% of 100% choose to use a cooperative strategy. Thus, it is suggested that the english teachers apply strategy cooperative when teaching narrative text.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Using Wordless Picture Book on students’ achievement in writing recount text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. Two classes from five parallel classes were taken by lottery technique which divided into two groups, 30 students as control group and 30 students as experimental group. The instrument used in this research is to find quantitative data. The analysis in were showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant  = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 3.006 > t-table value > 2.000. The findings indicate that using Wordless Picture Book significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Wordless Picture Book in order to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.

Abstract

The objective of this study aimed to analyzing higher order thinking skills of reading comprehension questions in English textbook for eleventh grade of senior high school. It also used qualitative research method for collected, analyzed and classified reading questions based on revised of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The data of this study were taken from reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook. The findings showed that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills looks like: the analyze skill obtains 20 out of 155 reading comprehension questions (12.9%) while the evaluate skill only obtains 4 out 155 questions (2.6%) and the create skill obtains 2 out of 155 questions (1.2%). The dominant level of the higher order thinking skills contained in analyze skill (12.9%). These results do not achieve proportion of thinking order skills namely 30% for C1 and C2, 40% for C3 and C4, and 30% for C5 and C6. It shows that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills in the reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook is unequal.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were (1) to analyze feasibility of content (2) to analyze feasibility of presentation in the English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013. This study used descriptive qualitative. The data collected for this study were from “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” published by Yrama Widya with the writer Otong Setiawan Dj. There are 12 chapters within this textbook and the writer determined to study 6 out of 12 chapters as the sample for the whole book. The results of this study were (1) the feasibility of content in English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013 with percentage 89.58%. (2) the feasibility of Presentation in English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013 with percentage 88.88%. (3) KD and KI in this textbook also according to Curriculum 2013.Therefore, it can be concluded that English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK Kelas X” published by Yrama Widya, in terms of feasibility of content and feasibility of presentation, was good to be used in the first grade of senior high school using curriculum 2013.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the teacher and students talk percentage, teacher characteristics and the roles of the teacher during classroom interaction classroom interaction at SMPN 1 Berastagi in 2016/2017 academic year. This study used descriptive design. The subjects of this study were 38 students Grade VIII and an English teacher. The data were analyzed by using Flander’s formulates and interaction observation tally sheet. The instrument of collecting data ware observation tally sheet and video recording. The analysis showed that teacher talk percentage was 71,90 % and 28, 09% for students. It was found that teacher was dominant in talking than student. The teacher highest characteristics found were teacher control means dominated by commands or direction and content cross which were dominated by lecturing and questioning. For the roles of teacher, the two highest were teacher as controller and teacher as resource. From the result the writer concludes that the students were passive in the classroom interaction, on the other hand teacher hold almost the whole activities in the classroom.

Abstract

Reading is the basic in learning every subject. The more understanding the text, the more information students can gain. However, the reading materials that the students use is not appropriate based on syllabus. Therefore, the reading materials should be developed to fulfil the syllabus and the students' needs also. Because English is included Content Area Reading, so the development of reading materials is based on content area which focus on strengthen the vocabularies, specifically the unfamiliar ones, by giving glossary and related pictures. The developed text is only focus in the first semester which is descriptive and recount text. The research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Medan. The data was taken from interviewing the English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 30 students in grade VIII-4. The data showed that students need materials which is related to their environment and constructed by familiar vocabularies. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestion are directed to the English teacher who is teaching in that school to provide reading materials based on syllabus and students' needs regularly.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out an appropriate English listening materials forthe Grade X students of music performing art vocational school. SekolahMenengah Kejuruan (SMK) or Vocational School is an institution where studentsare prepared to be work-ready after finishing their education in specific major.Music Performing Art is one of the major provided in Indonesia’s vocationalschool. By the fact that listening activities are often ignored by teachers and thatlistening is one of the test in the National Examination, then listening activities areconsidered important in English learning activity. However, the finding ofmaterials that provided for the Grade X students of Music Performing Art major atSMK Negeri 11 Medan shows that the listening materials provided in the textbookare not related to the students’ major, instead the materials are rather general andmore suitable for other major. Therefore, it is needed to develop the Englishlistening materials for the tenth grader of music performing art major. Small-ScaleResearch and Development (R&D) is the suitable method in developing thematerials. Based on the students’ needs analysis obtained from the questionnaireswhich responded by 64 students and interviews which involved 4 students, theresearcher found that 78.13% of the respondents assumed that the existingmaterials provided by the teachers are general, and further 93.75% expect amajor-related English listening materials. The materials are developed by addingsome musical terms, like music instruments, and topics related to musical field,like popular singer’s profile, as a step to meet the students’ needs. The experts’validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used.Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to theEnglish teachers in SMK Negeri 11 Medan, especially, and in other music majorvocational school, generally, who are expected to provide materials which arerelated to the students’ major, by doing so the students might have motivation inlearning English and to support their knowledge to be a professional musicians.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Mind Mapping Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, Junior High School (SekolahMenengahPertama:SMP), which consisted of 207 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was writing descriptive text. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied William Knight formula. The result of the reliability was 0.95, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant μ= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (Df) 72, t-observed value 3.510 > t-table value 1.9932. The findings indicate that using Mind Mapping Technique significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Mind Mapping Technique in order to improve students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the pronunciation errors in long vowels in speaking test that have been made by the office administration and travel agency students SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. It was conducted by using qualitative research. The sample of this stufy is 30 students which is from office administration and travel agency students. The instrument of this research is speaking test that recorded in each student. The results shown the total errors in office administration students are 103 while in travel agency students are 118. The percentage of the error of office administration class is 47% and the percentage of the error of travel agency class is 53%. It shown that their ability in speaking test is still low. It was concluded that office administration students are better than travel agency students in speaking.
