Abstract

This research was based on the students’ problem regarding the English teaching of speaking skill. The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the implementation of topic based-paired conversation activity improves the EFL (English Foreign Language) students’ speaking ability at senior high school 3 Parepare, Indonesia. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental design, with two groups - experimental and control class. The population of the research was the eleventh-grade students at senior high school 3 Parepare. The sample of the research was taken by using total random sampling consisting of 56 students from two classes taken from the population of the eleventh-grade students. The result of the data analysis showed that the students' speaking ability improved, as evidenced by the result of probability and significant value in the post-test, where the probability value was 0.00 and the significance value was 0.05. In conclusion, teaching speaking through topic based-paired conversation activity was effective to improve the Indonesian EFL students' speaking ability. Abstract

Vocabulary learning is often perceived as boring by learners, especially for those who grew up in the digital era. The use of online games in vocabulary learning and teaching can be one solution to solve this problem. Android is the current world-famous software nowadays. It is believed to help teachers in delivering knowledge effectively and efficiently. Therefore, this paper aims to illustrate the effectiveness of Android-based educational games to enhance the ability of learners in learning English vocabulary. The discussion includes overview about vocabulary, games, ICT tools in EFL classroom, and the use of educational games from Android (App Inventor) can improve students' English competence in learning vocabulary. Therefore, this paper will be explained about the use of Android-based educational games as one of the fun alternative teaching innovations to support creative teachers and students. And hopefully it can be useful and meaningful reference and information for the reader about the use of android based educational game in learning and teaching English Vocabulary. Abstract

This research is intended to find out whether or not there is a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and English achievement of the fifth semester students of English literature department of UIN Alauddin Makassar and to explore how the high, moderate, and low achiever students learn and engage in English. In conducting the research, the researcher used mixed method in which both quantitative and qualitative approach were applied. Emotional intelligence questionnaire by Goleman was administered to 33 students and their scores were correlated to their English achievement (GPA) by using Pearson correlation coefficient. Observation and interview were carried out to get more detailed information about how the high, moderate, and low achiever students learn and engage in English. The result revealed that there was significant correlation between emotional intelligence and English achievement of both the high and moderate achiever of the fifth semester students of English literature department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. While for the low achievers there was not significant correlation. In addition, the high, moderate, and low achiever students were different in learning and engaging in English. Abstract

Discussion is one of alternatives technique to help students to formulate their ideas and learn to communicate to the others. The group discussion could be a technique which might be worthy for students, because group discussion is a way where the students have opportunity to express their thinkings to discuss a certain subject, and share information. They can propose arguments, agreements, or disagreements to a topic, and they can also interchange their ideas, feelings, and experiences, and it gives students chances to speak. In this study is aimed to find out the effectiveness group discussion technique for teaching speaking for the tenth grade students in MAN Pinrang in Academic Year 2018/2019. This study was conducted at MAN Pinrang from July 17th, 2018 to August 7th, 2018. The population of this study was the whole tenth grade students which consist of 280 students, whereas the sample was 64 students which were chosen by random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the writer used oral test to measure the students speaking skill and it is administered twice, namely pre-test and post-test, then the data was analyzed by using SPSS. From the descriptive analysis, it was known that before the treatment the ability of both groups was relatively the same. The two group homogenous, before the treatment began because there was only a slight difference in result between the experimental group and control group. After receiving the different treatments, the result of the experimental group was better than of control group. Based on the statistical analysis, in can be seen that sig (2 tailed) 0,001 < 0,005 it means that there is a development after treated to the students’ speaking ability. From the result above, it can inferred that the group discussion as a technique for teaching speaking for the tenth grade students in MAN Pinrang in academic year 2018/2019 were effective. Abstract

This research was about the use of flash player as media in enhancing students’ writing ability in descriptive text at the 1st year students of SMAN 1 Pinrang. The principle problem was only one that was “To what extend does flash player as media enhance the students’ writing ability in writing descriptive text at the first year students of SMAN 1 Pinrang?” The objective of the research is “to find out the enhancement of the students’ writing ability in writing descriptive text”.The research was quasi Experimental Design using “Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population of this research was the 1st year students of SMAN 1`Pinrang which consisted 270 students. The samples were taken by using cluster samping. The researcher took two classes randomly as the sample. It involved 60 students with X.2 consisted 30 students as experiment class and X.4 consisted 30 students as control class. In experiment class, the total mean score of post-test was 70.06 was greater than the total mean score in control class was 62.96. From the t-test, the researcher found that the value of t-test in post-test was greater than t-table (3.22 > 2.021). Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher drew a conclusion that the use of flash player as media is effective to enhance the students writing ability in descriptive text at the first year students of SMAN 1 Pinrang. Abstract

Teaching EFL students are both challenging and demanding as English is neither the students’ mother tongue nor their second language. Therefore, it is essentially required to select an effective way or technique in achieving the objectives of the lesson. This study was aimed to investigate the use of sequence picture technique and its effectiveness in teaching EFL students how to write a procedure text. This study was conducted by using quantitative research with one group pretest-posttest design at Universitas Prima Indonesia. The steps involve administering pretest measuring the dependent variable, applying the experimental treatment X to the subjects; and administering a posttest again measuring the dependent variable. There were 40 students taken as the subject of the study. The data were collected through a pretest and a posttest. The result on this study showed that the students’ responses and performances were improved. It can be seen from the finding which showed that students’ percentage in using the language components such as grammar, sequence words, commands or imperative sentences, and adverbial phrases accurately. The result of the questionnaire also showed that the students considered sequence picture technique was effective in helping them write procedure text correctly.        Key Words: EFL Students, Procedure Text, Sequence Picture Media

Abstract

This study aims to find the types of illocutionary acts and the most dominant types of illocutionary acts of illocutionary used by Sandiaga Uno. The source of data of this study was taken from 4 videos that uploaded in Youtube Channel Podcast Ruang Sandi from March-April 2021. And this study only focuses on the illocutionary acts used by Sandiaga Uno. The writer uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the illocutionary acts by using the theory proposed by Searle in Rahayu (2018:177). After analyzing, the writer found 5 types of illocutionary acts used by Sandiaga Uno in the 4 videos, namely Assertives 33,8%, Directives 29,5%, Commisives 8,4%, Expressives 21,1%, Declaratives 7,04%. Based on the percentage, the most dominant used or the most frequently appeared is Assertives 33,8%. And the types of illocutionary acts assertives used by Sandiaga Uno to informing, describing, and asking to do something and telling the truth about something.
