Writing is one of the language skills that students consider difficult when learning English. Writing becomes challenging due to psychological, linguistic, and cognitive problems. Narrative text was chosen as the type of text that was researched in this present study since it is familiar to students’ world. This research further aims to describe (1) the profile of the ninth graders’ narrative writing texts in the secondary EFL classroom and (2) the difficulties encountered by the ninth graders in writing narrative text in the secondary EFL classroom. In line with those research objectives, this present study was therefore descriptive qualitative. The data for the first research question were in the form of students’ written words, sentences, phrases, and paragraphs that were taken from their narrative writing text results. While for the second research question, the data were in the form of students’ responses regarding their difficulties in writing narrative text in the secondary EFL classroom that were obtained from interview. After all the data for the present study were collected, the researcher then analyzed those data. The results of the study revealed that students mostly could develop their ideas well by organizing and writing those ideas into a coherent content and text structure of narrative text and utilizing appropriate diction (vocabulary), language use, and writing mechanics. However, some difficulties were still found during the process of writing, for example, lack of motivation, lack of confidence in writing, and the influence of the first language on writing in English.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of utilizing multimedia content to improve English-speaking proficiency among twelfth-grade students. The research adopted a quasi-experimental design, involving a sample of 70 twelfth graders from one of the vocational high schools in Surabaya. The experimental group underwent English-speaking sessions utilizing multimedia materials, whereas the control group received conventional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to gauge speaking proficiency. The analysis revealed a significant disparity between the pre-test mean (69.65) and post-test mean (80.13) scores in the experimental class. Conversely, the control class exhibited a pre-test mean of 65.29, with a slight increase to 70.94 post-test. The results unveiled a noteworthy enhancement in speaking performance among students in the experimental group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that integrating multimedia content into English-speaking instruction can effectively enhance students' speaking abilities in language acquisition. Hypothesis testing confirmed a substantial difference (T-test value > T-table value), underscoring the considerable impact of multimedia.

Abstract

The continual development of technology has led to the appearance of many software that could be used in the teaching-learning process. One such type of software is what is known as Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) tools. AWE tools can support the teaching-learning process by providing what is known as Automated Written Corrective Feedback (AWCF) for its user. Grammarly is one of the AWE tools that has stood out in recent years, gaining popularity worldwide, despite of that, the research done on the effectiveness of student engagement with the AWE tools has remained inconclusive so far. This research will be focused on finding how effective are students able to use Grammarly AWCF. The research will be a qualitative study based on the theoretical framework developed by Zhang and Hyland (2018) about student engagement with AWCF which includes three dimensions: behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. The data will be gathered using a questionnaire, interview, and analyzing a text taken from 10 students 2018 the English Education major chosen through non-probability sampling. The data received from the students will be analyzed using thematic analysis which includes five steps: familiarizing, coding, generating themes, finalizing themes, and writing conclusions from themes. The analyzed data will be presented using descriptive method. The result of the research found that while the students do have a generally positive emotional engagement with the AWCF they received from Grammarly, meaning that they appreciated the feedback, their behavioral and cognitive engagement was rather negative. Most of the students simply accepted the feedback they received from Grammarly without giving it much thought, meaning they couldn’t detect the error that the software missed or they followed the wrong AWCF. This imply that student couldn’t effectively engage with the AWCF they received from AWE tools and that they still needed teacher guidance.
