Abstract

AbstrakKarya tulis ini membahas Freemasonry, Simbol-simbolnya, dan keberadaan simbol-simbol Freemasonri di gedunggedungbersejarah Washington DC seperti yang diungkap pada novel ini. Pembahasan ini fokus pada dua masalahutama, (1) Bagaimana simbol-simbol Freemasonry digambarkan pada novel ini, dan (2) apa hubungan antara simbolsimbolFreemasonry dan gedung-gedung bersejarah seperti yang digambarkan dalam novel. Simbol-simbol Freemasonripada novel Dan Brown The Lost Symbol sangat menarik dianalisa dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotik. Artisemiotic adalah teori umum mengenai tanda-tanda dan simbol-simbol. Semiotik lebih memperhatikan makna pesan dancara pesan disampaikan melalui tanda-tanda dan simbol-simbol. Terdapat lima simbol utama yang ditunjukkan penulisuntuk pembaca. Melalui simbol-simbol tersebut mereka akan mengetahui pemikiran penulis bagaimana dia memandangdunia dan bagaimana dia berpikir mengenai tindakan dan objek-objek umum. Brown menggunakan The Chamber ofReflection, The hand of Mysteries , The Double-headed Eagle, The Masonic Ring , dan The Masonic Pyramid untukmenceritakan tentang Freemasonri. Simbol-simbol tersebut menggambarkan identitas Freemasonri sehingga pembacadapat mengerti dengan jelas apa dan bagaimana Freemasonri itu. Freemasonri mempunyai banyak rahasia-rahasia yangtersimpan pada simbol-simbol yang diciptakannya. Selanjutnya simbol-simbol tersebut juga muncul di arsitekturgedung-gedung bersejarah Washington DC misalnya The House of Temple, The US Capitol Building, dan GeorgeWashington Masonic Memorial. Di novel ini, Brown membangkitkan rasa ingin tahu pembaca dengan menciptakanmisteri-misteri di balik simbol-simbol tersebut. Dia selalu memberikan dorongan dan pengetahuan baru sehinggapembaca akan membaca novelnya hingga akhir. Mereka akan mempunyai kesan mendalam tentang novel yang merekabaca.Kata Kunci : Simbol-simbol,Freemasonri, Gedung-gedung bersejarah.AbstractThis paper deals with Freemasonry, its symbols, and the existence of Freemasonry’s symbols in Washington DChistorical buildings as revealed in the novel. Thus this study focuses on two major problems, (1) How is Freemasonry’ssymbols described in the novel, and (2) What is the relationship between Freemasonry’s symbols and historicalbuildings in Washington DC as reflected in the novel. Freemasonry’s symbols Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol is veryinteresting to be analyze d by using semiotic approach. This approach is defined as a general theory of signs andsymbols . It more concerns to the meaning of the message and how the message is delivered to signs and symbols.Thereare five main symbols which the writer shows to the readers. Through the symbols they will know the writer’s mind onhow he views the world and how he thinks of common objects and actions. Brown takes The Chamber of Reflection,The hand of Mysteries , The Double-headed Eagle, The Masonic Ring , and The Masonic Pyramid to tell aboutFreemasonry. Those symbols represent Freemasonry’s identity. The readers can gain clearly the ideas of what and howFreemasonry is. It has a lot of secrets in the symbols which it creates. Furthermore those Freemasonry’s symbols appearin the architecture of historical buildings in Washington DC such as The House of Temple, The US Capitol Building,and George Washington Masonic Memorial. In this novel, Brown evokes the readers curiosity by creating mysteriesbehind the symbols. He always gives impulse and new knowledge, so that the readers will read the novel till the end.They have certain impression about the novel which they read.Keywords : Symbols, Freemasonry, Historical Buildings

Abstract

Abstrak Sifat ingin berkembang pada manusia membawa setiap orang untuk bersaing satu sama lain . Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh tekanan yang berasal dari dalam diri manusia dan rasa tidak aman pada individu, disana tercipta situasi kerjasama yang kemudian dirumuskan menjadi hukum dan peraturan untuk menciptakan masyarakat yang stabil. Dalam perkembangannya, beberapa masyarakat atau suatu kelompok masyarakat melakukan suatu tindakan yang tidak menguntungkan bagi manusia lainnya yang mengakibatkan tindakan penindasan dan pemberontakan. Studi ini dilakukan untuk menganalisa perilaku manusia terhadap konsep penindasan dan juga pemberontakan terhadap masyarakat atau individu yang memberikan tekanan hidup atau suatu penindasan. Seperti yang disebutkan oleh Barker dalam konsep oppression yang menjelaskan bahwa penindasan terjadi jika seseorang atau sekelompok orang membatasi perilaku individu atau sekelompok masyarakat lainnya. Studi ini diproyeksikan terhadap novel Veronica Roth “INSURGENT” menggunakan istilah “divergent” sebagai subyeknya. The study is written by focusing on two questions: (1) how is faction oppression reflected in Tris in Veronica Roth Insurgent? And (2) what are Tris’ motif of resisting against the oppression in Veronica Roth Insurgent?. Analisis studi ini tentang seorang perempuan yang merupakan salah seorang dari divergent yang harus dimusnahkan sesuai anggapan Jeanine sebagai penguasa tertinggi dari faksi Erudite. Hingga suatu ketika perempuan tersebut harus merelakan banyak orang yang dia cintai untuk melindunginya dari pencarian Jeanine. Hidup secara nomaden yang dia lakukan adalah salah satu tindakan untuk mencari dukungan dari banyak orang. Hal ini bertujuan untuk melakukan pemberontakan terhadap pemerintahan Jeanine yang ingin melenyapkan orang yang dianggap sebagai Divergent. Hasil dari studi menunjukan penindasan yang dialami tokoh utama dan juga mengetahui tentang motif pemberontakan yang dilakukan tokoh utama tersebut. Keywords: Penindasan, pemberontakan Abstract Human nature wants to bring everyone to compete against each other. This is influenced by the human pressure and insecurity on the individual which has been created a situation of cooperation then formulated into laws and regulations to create a stable society. In the process of life, some people or a group of people perform an action that was not profitable to other humans which cause oppression and resistance. For that reason, this study was conducted to analyze the human behavior towards the concept of oppression and resisting against society or individuals who provide the pressures of life such as oppression. As mentioned by Barker in the concept of oppression, he explains that oppression occurs if a person or group of people restricts the behavior of individuals or a group of other people. The study is projected to Veronica Roth's novel "Insurgent" using the term "divergent" as the subject. The study is written by focusing on two questions: (1) how is faction oppression reflected in Tris in Veronica Roth Insurgent? And (2) what are Tris’ motif of resisting against the oppression in Veronica Roth Insurgent. This study is about the woman who called divergent that has to be destroyed. It is agreed by Jeannie’s perception who has a big authority of Erudite. She said that the people who are detected as the divergent, they have to move away from the life. Until the day moment, the woman must give up a lot of people that she loves to protect it from Jeanine’s search. Nomadic life that she did is one of the actions to look for support from the other people. This action is gathering people to resisting Jeanine’s governance who want to eliminate people that are considered as Divergent. The results of the study show the oppression experienced by the main character and also know about the motives of oppression by main character. Keywords: Oppression, Resistance

Abstract

Abstrak Fenomena akan isu sosial di masyarakat yang masih memandang wanita sebagai kaum kedua yang menyebabkan ketidaksetaraan dalam berbagai aspek . Masyarakat luas masih menganggap wanita sebagai individu yang bergantung pada pria, tanpa mempertimbangkan sebuah kemungkinan bagi si wanita untuk mandiri. Menurut konsep Tong tentang wanita dan ekonomi, dasar dari masalah utama pada wanita dalam kondisi yang digambarkan adalah ekonomi. Peran tradisional yang mengekang wanita dengan berbagai pekerjaan rumah tangga atau cara hidup konvensional dimana hal ini membuat mereka kurang kesempatan untuk memperbaiki dan membuat diri mereka jauh lebih baik dari segi ekonomi. Dengan kata lain, dapat dikatakan bahwa wanita tertindas secara ekonomi. Akan tetapi, dalam novel Sex and the City milik Candace Bushnell, digambarkan akan sebuah pemberdayaan wanita, sebuah kemungkinan dalam hal kekuatan finansial, yang dapat membantu mereka untuk melarikan diri dari penindasan secara ekonomi dan ketergantungan akan kaum pria. Oleh karena itu, studi ini ditulis dengan memfokuskan pada 2 rumusan masalah: (1) Bagaimanakah konsumerisme digambarkan dalam novel Sex and The City? Dan (2) Bagaimanakah karir berpengaruh pada perilaku konsumerisme pada wanita di bawah kapitalisme seperti yang digambarkan pada novel Sex and The City?. Data yang digunakan untuk menganalisa tesis ini diambil dari novel untuk membongkar sebuah wacana tentang konsumerisme sebagai refleksi akan kebebasab dan kekuatan secara finansial bagi wanita untuk melawan kekuasaan patriarki. Hasil dari studi ini untuk menunjukkan bahwa wanita modern yang ada dalam isi novel adalah individu yang berkompeten, agen yang aktif, sebuah subyek dalam masyarakat atau istitusi yang membangun kekuasaan agar setara dengan lelaki di bidang ekonomi melalui berkarir. Dan kesetaraan ekonomi yang didapat wanita ini menyebabkan mereka menjadikan subyek konsumerisme sebagai suatu gaya hidup. Dalam hal ini, konsumerisme di deskripsikan sebagai suatu intuisi alami seorang wanita untuk mengekspresikan sebuah penampilan, dandanan cantik dan juga berhubungan dengan sebuah kemolekan tubuh, dimana hal itu juga terangkum dalam pengalaman kisah percintaan dari sekelompok yang berisi empat orang wanita. Kata Kunci : Penindasan secara ekonomi, konsumerisme Abstract The phenomenon of social issue that still regard the women as the second sex cause inequality in many aspects in society. Most of society still consider women as the dependence individuals of men, without regarding the possibility of them to be independent. According to Tong’s concept of women and economy, the main source of this women condition is the economy. The tratidional role bonds women with the drudgery or the conventional way of life that make them lack of chance to improve and make their own life better economically.In other words can be said that women are repressed economically. However, In Candace Bushnell’s Sex and The City, it is depicted that the empowerment, a possibility in economy power, can help them fleeing from economical repression and dependence of men. Therefore, this study is written by focusing on two questions: (1) how is the consumerism portrayed in Sex and The City?, and (2) how does the career affects on women’s consumerism under the capitalism that depicted in Sex and The City?. The analysis data of this thesis are taken from the novel to dismantling the discourse of consumerism as a reflection of freedom and financial power for women to fight patriarchial rule. The result of the study approve that modern women in the novel are competent individual, an active agent, a subject within society or institution since they empower the economical side equal to men through building career. However, this economical equality brings them to consumerism as their life style. In this case, consumerism is described as women’s natural intuition to express the imagery, dolls up and relevant with Body Capital, that related to the experience of the foursome in their romance Keywords : Economically repression, Consumeris
