Abstract

This study analyses the subaltern that represented by Deeti in Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies. The subject of the subaltern as an Indian woman is struggling against patriarchy in society. This study uses the postcolonialism theory, including the theory of subaltern to analyze the representation of the subaltern subject who fights against patriarchy. That subject represented by Indian women as the subject of the subaltern. The narration of Deeti in the first Trilogy Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh is the main focus of this study. This study using postcolonialism theory from Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, then subaltern theory also using Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak which describes how colonialized subject lives and theories from Sylvia Walby and Gerda Lerner for the definition of patriarchy. So, this study mainly about how patriarchy will be related to Deeti as the subaltern explained by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. The data will be taken from many aspects such as dialogues, a depiction of the situation, characters, etc. This study analyzed two problems, which are (1) How is subalternity represented in Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies? (2) How do Indian Women’s struggle to fight against patriarchy in Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh? The results of this study show that Subaltern represented by Indian Women. Then the struggle of Deeti as an Indian Woman and the other characters fights against the patriarchy. Keywords: Postcolonialism, Subaltern, Patriarchy

Abstract

Slut shaming is a common issue that becomes another form of bullying and tends to go unnoticed by the public. Partly, it is experienced by a girl or woman in high school through sexual behavior or activity. This study explores the presentation of slut shaming in the literary work, Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why. The novel is reviewed as realistic fiction that shares slut shaming issue. Two objectives are illustrated here as, to find out how is slut shaming was experienced by Hannah Baker and what are the impacts of slut shaming toward Hannah’s life in Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why. It discusses the issue of slut shaming that happened to the main character by applying the theories of Jessica Ring rose and Emma Renold. The first results of this study reveal that Hannah Baker has experience slut shaming from her close friend. As the main character, she told the whole of her story through thirteen tapes and has some people on her special list. Being labeled as a slut and bad rumors show that she gets different treatment from her friends at school. The second result is about some psychological impacts of slut shaming toward Hannah Baker’s life in the novel. Here, Hannah shows a huge impact until makes her thought of suicide. Abstract

David Ebershoff’s The Danish Girl is a novel about a transgender in America. The objective of this research is to find out the depiction and the reasons of sex-typing process in The Danish Girl novel’s main character. This study used the Psychoanalysis theory by Paul Henry Mussen. In this study, there is two problem formulation. The first is to reveal how sex-typing depicted David Ebershoff’s The Danish Girl. The second problem is the reasons for the habit of sex-typing in David Ebershoff’s The Danish Girl. After analyzing this novel, there are two conclusions. Firstly, Einar Wegener is described as a man who has a feminine tendency. He identifies himself as a girl who trapped inside a male body. Secondly, Einar fill up the reasons for the occurrence of sex-typing habit. The reasons split into three parts. Firstly, the researcher finds that Einar get through the identification process. The second is a desire for praise, affection, and acceptance by parents and peers for sexually proper behaviour. The last, fear of punishment or rejection for sexual misconduct. Nevertheless, Einar turns out to be a woman trapped in a mans body. Keywords: Sex-typing, Psychoanalysis, Transgender, Transsexual

Abstract

Literary work has a relation with the reader because of the essence of literary work for readers. Therefore the quality of literary work based on the assessment of readers. Entitled readers to comment, judge, enjoy and appreciate what they read. The readers have a different way to give respond because the perception or respond based on their background includes their experience, their family, their environment. In this case, this thesis uses the novel of Randa Abdel Fattah with the title Does My Head Look Big In this. Which this novel about racism to Muslims in Australia. The reason for the research is the novel has critical of society in Australia with their perspective of Muslims. Besides that Indonesia is one of the largest Muslim populations. So we have to know how the perception or respond of Indonesias young Muslim to this novel. This research aims to describe how the responds or perception of Indonesia young Muslim to the novel of Randa Abdel Fattah Does My Head Look Big In this. This research using interviews and reading the log. This theory of this research is reading the response, diaspora studies, identity, veil and veiling practice, immigrant Muslims in Australia. The result of the research is showing that readers involves emotional and feeling in their response. Some of the readers feel that the veil is important for women especially Muslims, others felt that the veil is a commitment. therefore, the response of readers it depends on each individual. After the reader read the novel, they have some emotional and feeling to the character in the novel. The readers fell what the character feeling although they just read the novel.

Abstract

Sefi Atta as one of Nigerian famous writers has made an honorable literary work entitled Everything Good Will Come. Atta was trying to portray the life of men and women under a patriarchal society. Women that are regarded as second class citizens are being oppressed by the superior class, in this case, men are taking the part as their oppressor. This study will focus on revealing how oppression is happened to female characters, done by male characters. Irish M. Young’s founding will be used to identify different types of oppression that are experienced by women. Young divides oppression into five structures; exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. The analysis exposes that the events in the novel indicate the existence of oppression that comes across each female character in the novel, per character might face a different combination of oppression’s structures. Other than oppression, this study will also unveil women’s attempts to liberate themselves from oppression. Since Nigeria still strongly embraces patriarchal culture, a patriarchal theory will be applied, a theory coined by Sylvia Walby will come as an assist to reveal how women are living in a patriarchal society which can be the source of their repressions. Walby also points out her arguments about several egressions that women can do to free themselves from patriarchy. Some of Walby’s commentaries will be applied to this study as guidance to name the female characters’ struggles such as do the decision-making for their own lives, education, career improvisation, and divorcement to fight against male supremacy.
