Abstract

This paper discussed gender discrimination between men and women in Mimi Leder's "On the Basis of Sex (2018)" movie using the Marxist feminism perspective. Gender discrimination describes how women and men treated unequally in various aspects. “On the Basis of Sex” revealed how women demonstrate the equal treatment of men and women in all spheres. In the movie, a female lawyer got a case about denying tax deduction to a man petitioner. She understands that it can revolutionize her career. By using a theory of Marxist Feminism by Simone De Beauvoir, it helped to achieve this study’s aim. Beauvoir represented that women are independent through being feminists. This study used textual and film visual analysis in following discussions; women being degraded sexually and professionally, and factors that support woman to fight against gender discrimination. From the analysis, women are able to prove that through her struggle, she gets equal rights. Women's equality is the biggest problem in women's lives. Those continue to be limited by discrimination and social inequality.

Abstract

This study discusses the discrimination that occurs in the short story of the Gadis Berkulit Hitam. The discrimination is due to the oppression of white people against black people. The concept of black and white is an inverse which cannot be separated from one another. The inverse gives a binary opposition and can form a new meaning for a person. Black and white is part of the identity of post-colonialism. In the short story Gadis Berkulit Hitam, the main character is a country girl who goes to France to achieve her dream of coveted luxury and success. But it never came true because she was just a black girl. Through a deconstruction approach, the writer begins to try to come up with a new identity for the main character in the short story by taking advantage of the language gap. This uncertainty eventually led to the absence of the main character. Therefore, a person's identity can change and the process of change is called difference which means to distinguish and be different. The writer tries to apply this concept to bring up a new identity for black girls by deconstructing the pre-formed hierarchy. In conclusion, the black and white construction inherent in society is a rigid construction and cannot be justified anymore. The boundaries that become the identity and separate the binary opposition cannot be strictly maintained.

Abstract

Psychosocial is an important study to be understood and studied by everyone to know oneself as the basis for socializing. This study is also very important for people who have experienced social injustice, like the Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Because the study can help the characters to know themselves to live their new life, their personality development is described through several phases called "The Eight Phases of Man" in Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory. The description of each phase, in theory, shows the importance of the process of developing character identity in social life as a fundamental way to build good social relations with many people and social circles. Based on the results of this study shows that of the eight human phases in Erik Erikson's theory, there are six phases that can be used to explain the personality of the characters. Furthermore, the descriptions reveal that there is one character that stands out the most and dominates the other two out of the three analyzed characters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the gender discrimination in Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s The Witcher (2019). It explains what gender discrimination suffered by the female main character, Yennefer, and what actions did she take to rise from gender discrimination in film. Gender discrimination toward women is still happening in our society, and people still not being aware of this women's oppression issue. Yennefer is suffering gender discrimination toward women in the movie. Because of her gender, Yennefer has only seen her based on her appearance. When she doesn’t meet people’s standards of beauty, she was seen as a creature with no value. This study is a feminist analysis that applies Simone de Beauvoir’s (2010) existentialist feminism theory as well as Timothy Heiderich’s (2012) and Warren Buckland’s (2015) cinematographic language. The findings show that Yennefer is suffering from gender discrimination toward women. She is mistreated because of her appearance. When Yennefer realize that she can rise from the gender discrimination she suffered, she decided to take her chance and freed herself from her condition.

Abstract

Disney movie Moana has broadly analyzed in many journals portrayed through lenses of ecological study, but none of them take more focus on the process of reconciliation with nature yet. The movie brings up the issue of nature exploitation caused by human greed that does not think of the adverse impacts. This paper is a part of a film study that analyzes the process of reconciliation with nature using an ecocritical perspective to examine the nature exploitation and the process of reconciling the balance of nature in Moana. The study reveals that nature exploitation is portrayed when Maui steals the stone from Te Fiti that contains a super power that can create life, which creates the scarcity of natural resources on each island. Furthermore, the study shows that Moana is on the ecocentric side and shows ecocentric attitudes toward related environmental issues. The results of this study reveal that Moana not only cared about nature but also valued them as entities with a life force. She leads the reconciliation process to restore the balance with nature.
