Abstract

This research explores how the TikTok trend “How I Love Being A Woman” represents self-acceptance among young women. Gaining significant popularity between 2023 and 2024, the trend showing women embrace and celebrate their identity as females. The study focuses on four highly popular videos from the trend selected based on high numbers of views, likes, and comments to analyze how self-acceptance is expressed through their content. This research is grounded in cultural studies and applies Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, combined with Albert Ellis’s REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) theory, and examines audience interpretation using Hall’s audience reception theory. The findings highlight three key forms of self-acceptance displayed in the videos which are, acceptance of being a woman, acceptance of physical appearance and acceptance of domestic role. In terms of audience reception, some viewers take a negotiated or oppositional position toward the idea of acceptance of being a woman arguing that the expressions shown do not truly reflect self-acceptance. Meanwhile, audiences largely adopt a dominant position when it comes to acceptance of physical appearance and domestic roles. Overall, the majority of the audience aligns with the dominant reading of the trend.

Abstract

Helen Dunmore’s Ingo is a novel that employs the elements of magical realism to explore environmental issues. This study focuses on Ingo because its fantastical aspects reflect characteristics of magical realism and appear to impact the environmental awareness of its main characters. This study has two main aims: to examine how magical realism is depicted in the novel and to investigate its influence on the main characters’ awareness of the environment. To accomplish this, the study applies Wendy B. Faris’s five key features of magical realism: the presence of irreducible magic, the extraordinary world, unsettling doubts, the fusion of two different worlds, and the disruption of time, identity, and space. The primary source is the 2009 e-book edition of Ingo published by HarperCollins, with collected data drawn from narrative passages and dialogues involving the three main characters, namely Sapphire, Conor, and Faro. The analysis follows the TEEL (Topic, Evidence, Explanation, Link) structure and is supported by relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that Ingo exhibits all five of Wendy B. Faris’s magical realism elements, and its extraordinary elements effectively highlight environmental concerns, ultimately shaping the main characters’ environmental awareness.

Abstract

This study analyses the depiction of magical realism in A Space For The Unbound (2023), a video game developed by Mojiken Studio. The research applies Wendy B. Faris’s framework on magical realism, focusing on its five key characteristics: irreducible elements, the phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realms, and disruption of time, space, and identity. The study conducts a narrative analysis of the game, revealing how these characteristics shape the narrative structure. The findings suggest that the game integrates supernatural elements not only as a stylistic device but also as a tool to engage players emotionally and challenge conventional storytelling. Through the experiences of the protagonists, Atma and Raya, the game uses the supernatural to address themes of trauma, identity, and mental health within a culturally rich, rural Indonesian context. The analysis shows that A Space For The Unbound blurs the boundaries between reality and the fantastical, creating an immersive narrative experience that goes beyond traditional linear storytelling. The research highlights the potential of magical realism in interactive media, offering new insights into the emotional depth and narrative innovation in video games.

Abstract

Parenting and identity are two topics that coexist, especially in the context of literature. Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (1989) includes the topic of parenting, especially between mothers and their daughters, and the development of someone’s identity. However, the connection between the mothers’ identity and the parenting tendency in the novel is rarely explored. Therefore, the novel The Joy Luck Club, especially three of four mothers, An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, and Ying-Ying St. Clair, is used as the object of the research because there are depictions of the correlation between identity and childhood experiences, as well as between identity and parenting. This study aims to examine the connection between the mothers’ identities to their childhood experiences, and also the relationship between the identities of mothers with their parenting tendencies. To complete those targets, Erik Erikson’s theory about identity will be the basis to find a connection between their identities and their childhood experiences, then collaborating it with Diana Baumrind’s classification on parenting to find the relation between the identities and their parenting tendencies. The analysis will be supported by Erikson’s definition of identity and Baumrind’s classification of parenting. The findings of this study reveal that mothers’ identities in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (1989) are related to their childhood experiences. Moreover, it also discovers how their identities are related to their parenting tendencies according to Baumrind’s classification.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of social class in the anime The Rising of the Shield Hero within the framework of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the reproduction of social life. The study examines comments on the Kingdom of Melromarc's hierarchical structure that influences the protagonists and what can be maintained in the ruling class, especially in the Church of Nobility and the Three Heroes. The study uses a qualitative content analysis method and focuses on the narrative elements in the anime, the interaction between characters, and the relationship between heroes. The result is the rigid hierarchical structure of Melromarc, which strengthens economic, cultural, and social capital, limits social mobility, and maintains the dominance of the elite. These studies are consistent with the concept of life and Bourdieu's square, illustrating the street power commentary on visible and invisible social mechanisms.

Abstract

Dehumanization is becoming a global issue nowadays and its reduction is spread through media technology, such as movies, to raise society’s awareness of the marginalized group. This research aims to identify the dehumanization mechanisms and how social inequality shapes the dehumanization of the main character in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). This alienation theory proposed by Karl Marx (1974) is used as an approach in analyzing the data. This research analyzes dialogue transcripts as the main data and scenes as well as audio as secondary data to reveal the issues. The results of the analysis indicate that the dehumanization mechanisms of Lucy Gray are legalized by the authoritarian government of the Capitol which also alienates the lower class into objects of entertainment shows, dangerous entities, and tools of winning. Moreover, two categories of social inequality, namely powerlessness and social classification, show how power and social status generate dehumanizing mechanisms.

Abstract

This study examines the trauma and memory associated with the Vietnam War experience in Shirley Ann Grau's short story "Homecoming," drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s narrative Theory, Maurice Halbwachs' Theory of collective memory, and Cathy Caruth's concept of trauma. The literary psychology approach analyzes how narration plays a role in individuals' struggle to confront trauma deeply rooted within. Specifically, Paul Ricoeur’s Theory is employed to depict the psychological struggle process in facing and overcoming trauma through narration as a medium of reflection and understanding of psychic wounds. Halbwachs' Theory explains how collective memory is formed by groups post-conflict, while Caruth's concept highlights trauma as an unresolved psychic wound profoundly affecting consciousness. The story portrays ongoing internal conflicts and wounds due to war trauma, as well as the crucial psychological struggle dynamics in the healing process. The findings affirm literature's vital role as a medium for reflecting historical memory, aiding post-conflict reconstruction, and enriching social interaction within society.
