Abstract

This study analyses the representation of psychological terror and labor exploitation in Chernobyl (2019). This study adopted a Marxist theoretical approach, following Althusser’s perspective with the concept of the State Ideological Apparatus (SIA) and the State Repressive Apparatus (SRA). The research conduct content analysis on five episode: ‘1:23:45’, ‘Please Remain Calm’, ‘Open Wide, O Earth’, ‘The Happiness of All Mankind’, and ‘Vichnaya Pripyat’. The study findings indicate that the Soviet government in the Chernobyl TV series used psychological terror through strict surveillance, information manipulation, and ideological pressure to impose compliance. Scenes such as Sitnikov’s death and the dangerous tasks performed by the divers depict how the state packaged exploitation within a narrative of heroism. The study also shows that interventions against scientists like Legasov and Khomyuk were a means of state control over truth. The Chernobyl TV series works as a critique of authoritarian systems that sustain authority through lies, fear, and violence, thereby pointing to concludes that psychological terror is still a simple way to keep an eye on the workers and keep ideological hegemony in the modern era.

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.

Abstract

The researcher discussed two problems that exist in Fahrenheit 451 novel by pointing out the binary opposition and dismantling them. The Object that was used for this research is Novel by Ray Bradbury titled “Fahrenheit 451”. The narrative revolves around its main character namely Montag and other major characters in facing problems of their world. The method that was used is Jaques Derrida’s binary oppositions and deconstruction theory. Derrida was critical to structuralist approach in dismembering literature works that he stated if they were consist of Binary Opposition. As he stated with his deconstruction method, meaning in text was not universal as it forms resemblance of hierarchy structure which he called Binary Opposition. In Derrida’s concept of Binary Opposition, by analyzing the privileges of Dominant Meaning, the disadvantages of Subordinate Meaning and the instability between paired terms can deconstruct the Binary Oppositions that present in the book. Thus, new interpretation of meanings can give true meaning of being arbitrary. The results in finding Binary Opposition in Novel Fahrenheit 451 are the followings: Independent Woman vs Housewife, Expelled Educated Group vs Uneducated Citizen, Collective Issues vs Individual’s Problems, Job vs Avocation, Taught vs Self-taught, Pleasure vs Pain. Turns out, the researcher is able to dismantle it by reversing the subordinate terms and displacing binary opposition. As a conclusion, Deconstruction theory seeks to disprove commonly accepted notions and present alternatives that may appear contradictory to some. Different points of view may be ignored, despite the fact that truth is commonly taken for granted, suggesting the truth can be subjective.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how toxic masculinity is depicted and its impact in the film Monster (2023) by Hirokazu Koreeda, using Michael Kimmel’s theory of masculinity (1997). The method used is qualitative descriptive, with data obtained from scenes and dialogues in the movie, as well as sources such as books, journals, and relevant websites. The results of this study show that this movie depicts various forms of toxic masculinity, such as the demand to be a “real man,” the rejection of anything considered feminine, and homophobia. This has an impact on the psychological condition of the characters Minato and Yori, who experience mental pressure, bullying, and even violence. This study shows how toxic masculinity affects social interactions and reinforces rigid gender norms, especially in children. This study is also expected to contribute to the depiction of toxic masculinity in films and serve as a foundation for further research in the field of gender studies.

Abstract

This study examines the depiction of labor exploitation in The Menu (2022) using Marxist theories. By focusing on the relationship between Chef Slowik and his kitchen staff, this study analyzes how exploitative labor conditions can lead to alienation and suicide. Using a qualitative method, the film is thematically analyzed through dialogue, visuals, and character interactions. The study draws on the theories of Karl Marx to explore the themes of surplus value, false consciousness, and different forms of suicide. The menu shows that in extreme capitalism, death is not simply the end of life, but can also be a symbol of critique, rejection, and liberation. using the concept of alienation. These three deaths, although different in form and context, share the understanding that when work, identity, and the value of life are completely taken over by the capitalist system, alienation can push individuals and collectives towards inevitable destruction. The findings reveal how capitalist pressures in a stressful environment can lead to psychological disorders and fatal consequences.
