Abstract

The prevalence of smokers in children and adolescents in Indonesia has increased by 19.4%. Smoking can cause pathological conditions in the oral cavity, one of which is gingivitis. Objective: To determine the relationship of smoking behavior factors based on the number of cigarettes and duration of smoking with gingival health status in adolescent boys aged 15-19 years in Wangunsari Hamlet, Setiawaras Village, Cibalong Sub-District, Tasikmalaya District. Method: observational analytic with the cross-sectional approach. A sample of 48 adolescents boys aged 15-19 years. Data analysis uses frequency distribution and Spearman correlation. Results: 35 respondents (72.92%) had moderate categories of smoking behavior based on the number of cigarettes, 35 respondents (72.92%) had heavy categories of smoking behavior based on smoking duration, 28 respondents (58.33%) had moderate gingival health status. Spearman correlation test results for the relationship of smoking behavior factors based on the number of cigarettes with gingival health status obtained p-value of 0.003 (<0.05), while for those based on smoking duration with gingival health status obtained p-value of 0,000 (<0.05) ) shows that smoking behavior factors based on a number of cigarettes and duration of smoking have a positive and meaningful relationship with gingival health status. Conclusion: there is a relationship between smoking behavior factors based on the number of cigarettes and duration of smoking with gingival health status in adolescent boys aged 15-19 years in Wangunsari Hamlet, Setiawaras Village, Cibalong Sub-District, Tasikmalaya District.

Abstract

Behavior is one of the factors causing dental and oral health problems which is influenced by lack of knowledge. Teenagers aged 13-15 years is a critical age of periodontal disease. Riskesdas data (2018) shows the prevalence of dental and oral health problems 57.6% which often occur to teenagers, namely gingivitis. Siwak natural ingredients, contain antibacterial as an alternative treatment for gingivitis. This research aims to determine the effect of tooth brushing behavior with miswak extract toothpaste using a roll technique on the gingival health status of teenagers aged 13-15 years. Method: quasi experimental design one group pretest and posttest design. Sample: 18 adolescents aged 13-15 years. The research path of respondents were given a tooth brushing behavior questionnaire, examination of gingival health status using the gingival index. Data analysis: Paired Sample T-Test test. Results: before the treatment of tooth brushing with miswak extract toothpaste using a roll technique, there are 10 respondents (55.6%) in the sufficient category and there are 14 respondents (77.7%) with moderate health status of gingiva, after the treatment: there are 9 respondents (50%) in the good category of tooth brushing behavior and 11 respondents (61.1%) with mild gingival health status. The results of Paired Sample T-Test of tooth brushing behavior p-value 0,000 (<0.05), gingival health status p-value 0,000 (<0.05). Conclusion: there is an influence of tooth brushing behavior with miswak extract toothpaste using roll technique on the gingival health status of teenagers aged 13-15 years.

Method: Quasi experiment with one group pretests posttest design. Samples of 33 students. The samples were instructed to chew the Royal Gala Apple 100 gr for 5 minutes. Plaque measured by PHP index and salivary pH is measured with universal indicator paper. Results: The normality test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov is obtained by the plaque and salivary pH results before and after chewing the Royal Gala p-value of < 0.05 so, that distribution data is abnormal. Data analyzed using Wilcoxon test was obtained PHP plaque index and salivary pH before and after chewing Apple Royal Gala p-value: 0.000 (sig < 0.05) Conclusion: there is a chewing effect of the Royal Gala Apple Fruit against plaque formation and salvary pH in grade VI students SDIT Assunnah Cirebon.

Primary measures to prevent caries are effective for teeth that are still healthy or when the initial caries occurs. Initial caries characterized by demineralized tooth enamel but no cavities have been formed. Primary stage of caries prevention includes dental health education, maintaining dental health, regular dental examinations, administering fissure sealants, and administering topical application fluoride (TAF).
