AIMS AND SCOPE Manasa publishes papers that focus on understanding human behavior as individuals and groups which include in any organization/school/community setting in regard to their personality, emotions, cognition, behavior, and any other psychological aspects and processes, ranging from children, adolescents, adults, to the elderly. In particular, papers that are relevant to current issues of urban areas, marginal, and multi-cultural groups in society within the Indonesian context. Manasa publishes papers with quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research; field study, and experimental approaches. The journal also publishes theoretical papers; empirical studies; case studies; empirical reviews; reports on instruments development and psychometric adaptation; and reports on innovative psychosocial programs or policies. Submitted manuscripts may also report results from either cross-cultural comparative research or single culture studies.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the motivation dynamics behind thedecision to become a care giver in SOS Desa Taruna Semarang using Maslow’sHierarchy of Motivation theoretical framework. Since they are not allowed to bemarriage when being a care giver, it is not an easy requirement to fulfill. There must be a strong motivation to commit with the requirement. Using qualitative approach, the participants of this study are care givers who have been worked at least for five years. A number of interviews and observations are applied. The results show that there is dynamic on the salient of safety needs and belongingness and love needs during the period of being a care giver. They need to consistently adaptive to deal with changes in the children situation.

Abstract

The growth of psychology programs offered by Indonesian higher educationinstitution is well documented. Currently there are 24 universities offering bachelor degree majoring in psychology within Greater Jakarta area and it creates competition to have students enrolled. This intense competition among universities to capture prospective students should impact how each program fulfills students’ needs to ensure their satisfaction toward their whole experience. The aim of the study is to explore students’ of psychology major satisfaction toward their overall college experience. Students satisfaction is defined as the subjective evaluation of students toward their college experience which have personal meaning. 276 psychology students from two universities participated in this study. Analysis showed that vast majority of the students feel that their choice of psychology was fulfilling their hopes and therefore their overall college experience could be described as satisfying. Factors contributed to this overall satisfaction is further analyzed and discussed

Abstract

Nowadays, just a few elementary schools have sexual education programfor their students. One of school that had not a consistent sexual education fortheir students is SD X. Teachers have difficulties determining the appropriatematerial, as it is not regulated in the curriculum, whereas teachers have a central role in planning and delivering sexual education program. Teachers, amongst the others in school, know their student best, their age and stage of developments, their families and their learning needs. The purpose of this study is to gain a descriptive review of SD X teachers’ knowledge about children stage of development in physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and sexual aspects. Instrument tools used in this study is questionnaires and group interviews to homeroom and subject teachers. Result from this study is teachers’ knowledge about the children developmental stages currently at quite adequate level, but not been evenly distributed in the four aspects measured. Therefore, teachers need to be given a short training about school age developmental stages and the appropriate sexual education program for elementary school.

Abstract

Unwanted pregnancy before marriage bring complex problems, especiallyfor adolescents who experience the pregnancy. Pregnancy as a relatively newexperience, accompanied by any change in the physiological, psychological, andthe role that occur rapidly, can be a stressor in adolescents in that situation.Otherwise, most teenagers who become pregnant does not have a partner,whereas the presence and support partner is an important factor for pregnantwomen. Instead, these teenagers will seek support from other sources. RFoundation specifically provides services for women who become pregnant outside of marriage. The support provided by the R Foundation is expected to facilitate the youth to live with a stressful pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to describe the perceptions of social support in adolescents who experience unwanted pregnancy before marriage. In accordance with the purpose of the research, this study used a qualitative approach. The method for collecting the data were interviews. The number of subjects in this study consisted of two subject aged 18 and 17 years old. Thematic analysis is implemented for analyzing interviews data. The results showed that the four aspects of social support to help teens in carrying out illegitimate pregnancy. Same perception of the companionship and emotional support/esteem support is considered dominant in helping these young people cope with the psychological stress due to unwanted pregnancy before marriage. Tangible/instrumental support can facilitate the needs of youth to support the pregnancy. Informational provide knowledge about pregnancy, as well as planning for the future of youth and her future.

Abstract

Math is an important subject. It will improve student’s ability to thinklogically, analytically, and systematically. However, the process of learningmathematics often causes anxiety. Math anxiety is a feeling of inadequacy,tension, or panic when dealing with arithmetic operations and mathematicalproblems in a situation of academic and in everyday situations. One of the factors that cause mathematics anxiety is the learning methods which were notappropriate to make students understand mathematical concepts. Because of this they had an unpleasant experience while learning mathematics.Researchersexamined the level of mathematics anxiety among students who learn with rotemethod of learning and inquiry learning. Rote learning method is learningthrough memorizing a series of information without understanding the processand the relation between those concepts. Inquiry learning is a method thatencourages students to collect and analyze information, make decisions, buildtheir own understanding, create new things, and apply those concepts to solve problems. Researchers used a Children Math Anxiety Questionnaire (CMAQ). There were 175 students. The results show that there are significant differences in the level of mathematics anxiety among students who learn by rote learning and inquiry. Another factor that determines the math anxiety are the demands of the family and also the school for students to get high grades in math.

Abstract

Anxiety is usually experienced by female inmates during their freedom. Itmay be caused due to negative stigma from the society, rejection from theirfamilies and negative perception towards inmates. The anxiety experienced byfemale inmates will show its impact when they return to the society, includingpsychological impact, such as low self-esteem. Therefore it requires sometreatments to minimize their anxiety, such as by expressive writing. The objective of this research is to acknowledge the impact of Expressive Writing approach towards anxiety on female inmates who are waiting for their freedom. The design of this research is mixed method. Participants of the research are 19 female inmates around 21 – 40 years old in average, high school graduates, and most of the participants are already married. The participants are from LPW Palembang and RUTAN Prabumulih. Intervention is performed in six sessions, each session is 15 minutes. Data analysis is using Wilcoxon signed rank test for quantitative approach. The research showed significant difference of anxiety levels after the Expressive Writing sessions. Expressive writing approach is one of some other intervention that can help decreasing the inmates anxiety level. Most of the participants see Expressive Writing as a way to express their emotion which is capable to give relieving effect after performing it. Further research by using this approach is still required therefore the benefit can be seen in various areas.
