Abstract

Rhetoric has an essential role in developing Islamic civilization and da’wah. Rhetoric in the Islamic tradition has a dualistic paradigm that appears with two faces, specifically balaghah and khithobah. The character of balaghah is inherent in the rhetorical tradition, where the qualification of the message language is essential, including eloquence, meaning, and metaphor. In comparison, the khithobah character is attached to the quality aspects of the message content and the technique of delivering the message. This literature research found that the two faces of this rhetoric have further developments, one is progressive, and the other is still stagnant. The progress of balaghah is not only based on the role of Arabic as the Quran language but also the miracle of the Quran language itself. While khithobah is an essential part of delivering Islamic symbols, it is still considered a mere praxis and religious routine, and it has not developed as scientifically theoretic. Amid the limitations of the study of khitobah as part of Islamic rhetoric, this paper will elaborate on the dynamics and span developments periods.

Abstract

Most of the disability issues have not yet received proper representation in the media, even though quite a few people with disabilities in Indonesia. The depiction of persons with disabilities in the media often distorts them. Often people with disabilities with physical limitations are depicted incorrectly or even irrationally. The Social Construction of Reality (SCR) theory, introduced by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, uses to analyze whether the Kick Andy television program supports the stigma of the disabled or can be a medium that changes the stigma that exists as constructs for the disabled-related community. Television viewers have a rationalistic cycle through three moments: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. This theory focuses on general meanings and constructions built by community groups to shape social order (rules, standards, values, and activities recognized in community groups). The study results show that guest stars with disabilities on the Kick Andy television program cannot separate from the social construction that has been formed in the community regarding their condition. The Kick Andy program also clarifies the social construction experienced by its guest stars, which uses as an object of motivation for the audience. The researcher found that the Kick Andy show, intentionally or unintentionally, still gave a lousy label to people with disabilities, even though the host then used the narration built as a background for inspiration.

Abstract

This paper aims to present the study about the representation of female superhero characters and gender roles in Avenger: Endgame. This study is justified to be important as females usually have their stereotypical representation in mass media, including film. Thus, it is crucial to explore and analyze whether or not female superheroes are depicted similarly. There are three main characters analyzed in this movie, namely Gamora, Black Widow, and Nebula. This study applies the semiotics method with a qualitative approach whereby Roland Barthes Semiotics is employed as the theoretical foundation of the analysis and strategy in this study. The research has focused on the representation of gender roles and physical manifestations of the characters in the film. The study has shown that (i) each of the characters plays several roles based on the context of the story, (ii) the balance of power between male and female are not equally distributed, and lastly (iii) Gamora and Nebula being different species than Black Widow which is human, had their appearance interpreted to possess a human-like body, yet the pattern of body size among these three-female superheroes sends a message that this body shape is the “ideal and desirable” body type.

This article discusses the communication strategy of the Tasawuf Underground community in da’wah to the punk community. The researcher analyzed the data collected through observation and in-depth interviews with key informants who retained da’wah experience in the Tasawuf Underground community. This study indicates that to preach to the Tasawuf Underground community, a preacher needs to have four things: a) source credibility; in this case, a preacher should have the charisma to influence the audience. b) the introduction of the “road map to home” is a term to invite punk children to study religious knowledge as a provision to return to the afterlife. c) effective communication between da’i and mad’u uses several media, mainly: social media, mass communication media, and interpersonal communication media. d) The message of da’wah is carried out in an informative and persuasive manner; an atmosphere of friendship and kinship is built between the audience and the communicator so that intimacy transpires. They built a communication strategy that resulted in changes in attitudes, actions, and improvements in the punk community members’ quality of life. Abstract

This study aims to examine the organizational communication control strategy carried out by the Purwokerto Branch of the Islamic Student Association (HMI) to demonstrate the Ratification of the Job Creation Bill (Omnibus Law). The method used is descriptive qualitative using organizational control theory as a theoretical framework. The results showed that the involvement of the Purwokerto Branch of HMI in the Omnibus Law demonstration was a critical intellectual movement that arranged forward a constitutional approach. The simple control aspect is implemented through a three-layer communication mechanism. The solidarity of members towards the three layers of communication constructs communication conduct harmoniously. HMI uses two technical tools for technical control, specifically communication aids and internal identification tools as non-verbal symbols of the organization. There are strict controls to identify members in the demonstration through the symbol. Regarding bureaucracy, this organization prioritizes communication with local authorities regarding the fulfillment of formal rules before holding a demonstration. In addition, organizational procedures are also carefully considered, especially regarding consolidating the organization’s internal communications. Conservative control is implemented by strengthening interpersonal communication with active members or alumni networks spread across various professions. The organizational communication control strategy of the HMI Purwokerto Branch focuses on the harmonization of demonstrations that prioritize aspirational and implementation communication by emphasizing a constitutional approach.

Abstract

The process of forming the construction in the media is called framing. Shia framing in the Indonesian mass media is constructed in such a way because it is a minority group that is considered deviant. In this study, the author will explain how the online media BBC News Indonesia and Radar Bangsa frame the Islamic minority sect to their readers and the alignments of the two media in constructing the reality of the Islamic minority sect. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method using the analytical framework of Zhongdang and Kosicki by looking at the syntactic structure, script structure, thematic structure, and rhetorical structure. The results showed that BBC News and Radar Bangsa have different framing in presenting and presenting a fact. The difference in locality makes BBC News Indonesia have a wider perspective in delivering news about minority sects, but Radar Bangsa only discusses the small scope of the report.

Abstract

The media is a medium for acquiring information, presenting factual information, data accuracy, and holding the responsibilities of news writers and media ethics. With the media’s significant role in constructing information and news, the media should be unbiased. However, the media has its pattern of publishing news, such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine. These contrasts can be seen from the various framing between one media and another, such as the different points of view of news writing, the title, and the images displayed. The purpose of this study is to examine how the media reconstructs the reality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The mass media studied were kompas.com and republika.co.id. The research method uses qualitative research with framing analysis of William A. Gamson and Andre Modigliani. Utilizing framing analyst William A. Gamson, the reality emerges in device framing devices and reasoning devices. The results showed that republika.co.id highlighted the news of the United Nations Security Council, which failed to handle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and tried to raise the image of Palestine, which desperately needed international support. Meanwhile, kompas.com reported on the conflict more neutrally, reporting the United Nations Security Council’s exertions to stop the conflict.

Communication is a primary need for every human being, including people with disabilities. Disability people, such as deaf people, also have interaction patterns to communicate effectively. Effective communication patterns can provide teaching and learning fluently at the Darul Ashom Islamic Boarding School for the Deaf, Yogyakarta. This research aims to study the effective communication design by teachers with deaf students in the Darul Ashom Islamic Boarding School for the Deaf, Yogyakarta. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Herbert Blumer’s symbolic interaction analysis perspective. This study indicates that the interaction pattern between deaf students and the teacher uses several symbols in the interaction process, such as spoken language, body language, sign language, and picture symbols. These symbols emerge and are used in the interaction process, especially the teaching and learning technique and memorization. The activities carried out by the students such as Tahsin, memorization, fiqh and hadith studies, murojaah and simaan also illustrate the use of symbolic interactions. The symbolic interaction has a meaning that the communicant and communicator understand to achieve effective communication.
