ELECTRUM stands for The English Language and Education Spectrum. The journal is a semiannual peer-reviewed publication of the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang. Abstract

Teaching English, particularly teaching its lexicogrammatical concepts, has been a challenging problem for teachers in Indonesia during this pandemic. The 'new normal' era has forced teachers to find cloud-based lexicogrammar materials for modeling activities in their online classes. These lexicogrammar materials are fortunately abundant on the internet, yet teachers, who are not English native speakers, still must search for authentic and relevant models. The purpose of this research, therefore, is to explore and present authentic and relevant cloud-based English lexicogrammar materials that can be good models for Indonesian teachers. In this exploratory study, both online and literature types of research were conducted to answer the formulated hypothetical question, "Does the internet really provide English teachers with authentic and relevant cloud-based materials for lexicogrammar modeling?" The result showed that so far, there are at least four websites providing authentic and relevant cloud-based English lexicogrammar materials for modeling activities in distance learning. Moreover, these four cloud-based materials provide free and easy access for internet users and various materials such as quizzes, videos, and downloadable materials; hence, good models for Indonesian English teachers. This research, moreover, also found that in terms of cloud-based materials, not only can internet-based materials be used as authentic and relevant materials, but even the 'offline' computer based-materials, which have been familiar among teachers before the pandemic, can also be authentic, relevant, and compelling cloud based-materials with the help of the common online platforms such as Zoom or Google Apps.

Abstract

This objective of the research is to identify the difficulties faced by the students in understanding the authentic listening materials of the news item. The participants of the research are the second-semester undergraduate Students of the English Education Department (EED) in Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang 2020/2021. The research method applied in this research setting is the descriptive method. Six students are participating in this research. To collect the data of the research, a questionnaire was used. The data collected was analyzed descriptively by identifying the responses of the questionnaire to identify further the difficulties faced by the research participants. The result of the research shows that the participants, majorly, face difficulties in understanding each part of the authentic news item materials. The difficulties faced by participants are caused by the rate or speed of the native speakers’ talk, the participants’ vocabulary unfamiliarity, lack of vocabulary mastery, and listening strategy.

Abstract

Speaking skills is important especially for future English teachers since it is the most widely used means of communication used in the teaching and learning process. In order to be able to deliver the material seamlessly, the teachers should have high competence in speaking with other competencies as well. This study aims to identify the students’ speaking circumstances and their perceptions of the involvement of students in developing material in speaking class. This study was a descriptive qualitative study employing observation, questionnaires, and interviews as the means of collecting data. The participants of this study were 7 second-semester students of the English education department at Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang joining in a transactional conversation speaking class. Inductive data analysis in this study was based on Burns (2010) and Hatch (2002). The results showed that the majority of the students still find it difficult to find a company in learning speaking from native English, however, it shifted into the native English that wanted to be a conversation buddy with them continuously, not only one-time conversation. The second was that the students were glad to be involved in the material development of the speaking class. Since they have different likings to native English videos to refer to. Introducing a topic at the beginning of the class really helped the students to stay on the right track in searching for the native English video in the speaking class.

Abstract

In this rapidly transforming way of teaching, blended learning has become popular across all education levels as it integrates the advantages of traditional classroom activities with online digital media. In the context of teaching English as a foreign language, teachers need to adapt to the use of technology in their teaching activities so that the learning objectives can be achieved successfully. This paper describes the implementation of blended learning in the Engagement Reading class conducted in the English Language Education Department of Universitas Nasional Karangturi. To get the data, the researcher conducted observation, interview, and documentation. The result of the study shows that the stages of building knowledge of the field, modeling of the text, joint construction of the text, and independent construction of the text are applied in the reading class. To facilitate the teaching and learning process, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, Zoom, Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome are utilised. At the end of the course, the students have positive perception toward the implementation of blended learning in the reading class. This is because they feel that the use of technology in blended learning facilitates communication and interaction, engagement, and collaboration. However, they still have problem commonly faced by the students in Indonesia, which is internet connection and credit quota.

Abstract

Google Classroom (GC), as one of the learning management systems (LMS), has been widely used by many educators and researched in many studies for its efficacy in assisting both teachers and students in learning a second language. This article presents a report of exploratory research about the possibilities of getting the most out of GC for educators to provide effective scaffoldings that can help their students achieve the goals of learning in writing. Referring to the concept of Zone Proximal Development (ZPD), the teaching and learning cycles (TLC), and the theories of distance learning, this article also attempts to display a model of ideal scaffoldings relevant for teaching writing in an online environment. Besides, through observations and investigations on a range of tools and materials on the internet and those discussed in different studies, this research reveals various types of potential applications that can be integrated with GC to make the lessons of writing more interactive and engaging. By reviewing other studies on the use of GC, this study highlights several technical issues and challenges to face when using the platform, particularly in teaching writing. For this reason, finding out appropriate ways and strategies on how to deal with the issues needs to be seriously considered so that the scaffoldings that have been designed can work as expected for effective online teaching and learning processes.
