Abstract

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. This study aimed to determine the critical thinking skills of pre-service teachers of chemistry education department at Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga; what barriers are owned by the students to develop critical thinking skills in developing learning tools; and efforts to what can be done by the department to improve those critical thinking skills. This research is a descriptive study that carried out in several stages: the development of research instruments (analysis learning tools sheet, critical thinking skills scale, interview guides, FGD questions guide); research instruments validation; data collection; data analysis; as well as inference and reporting. Analysis of the learning tools compiled by the students shows that there were weaknesses in determining student learning outcomes, which was found 60% selection of the type of assessment does not match with the learning objectives. Critical thinking skills of students are at a good level with an average ideal percentage of 72.7%. The lowest score obtained in “advanced clarification“ aspect, which was also proved from the interviews, the students did not have enough knowledge to explain more detail what was said previously. FGD with professors indicated that the necessary coordination meeting between lecturer at the beginning of each semester so that the distribution of matter in all subjects do not overlap.

Abstract

The background of this paper was declining of historical thinking of Islamic civilization in science. The aims of the research were to know: 1) how the concept of Jabir Bin Hayyan thought for developing chemistry; 2) how the application of Jabir Bin Hayyan's concept of thinking in the integration of Islamic science and technology; 3) how the restoration of chemistry to build civilization. This paper used library research by using descriptive analysis. Musa Jabir Bin Hayyan was a pioneer in modern science and inherited Alchemy. The work that is still used today such as reduction, sublimation, and distillation. Jabir Bin Hayyan creates alembic material that can turn wine into alcohol. This discovery is not necessarily abused into liquor. In contrast, alcohol production became a key process for developing a number of chemical industries during Islamic civilization. Alchemy has declined in the end of the 14th century and also as the lag progress of science in the Islamic world momentum, including chemistry. The decline of chemistry-science is the lack of moral support in Islamic civilization. Inserting the history and concepts of Muslim intellectual thought in science is the way to raise the age of Islamic civilization in present today. Integrating science with Islamic values needs to be applied. Because it can produce people who have intellectual and akhlakul karimah. Currently, the development of chemistry is increasing rapidly, both in terms of applied chemistry and pure chemistry. Those things are not separated from Muslim intellectuals’ struggle in developing science.

Abstract

Each religion has its own teaching or rules including Islam. Islam is revealed by Allah SWT to spread goodness and salvation or so called Rahmatanlill'alamiin (blessing to the entire universe), so that the teachings won’t harm the believer, one of the teachings of Islam is the haram to consume pork. The prohibition has no such clear reason in Al-Qur'an. The reason can only be clarified by using science method that is appropriate to the problem. One of the science that can clarify the reason is biology. In this paper the authors will correlate the teachings of Islam (haram of the pork consumption) and human health (biology). The method used is the analysis of the results research and literature study. It can be seen that the teachings of Islam haram of the pork consumption, because pork contains parasites.

Abstract

Modern science was developed by Western since the 16th century and reach its peak in the 20th century through the presence of concrete results of scientific study in various modern technologies. Modern science in technology product and other scientific inventions diffusively spread to many countries. This spread led to encounter between science and Islam. Science as a product from the west were responded differently by Muslim theologician (ulama). This ulama’s attitude categorized into three groups; secular, reconstructive, and semi-conservative. Secular group assume that scientific study as a product of research methods should be accepted as it is. The reconstructives appraising science as a product of western culture that should be reformulated. Whereas the conservatives attempt to match scientific discovery with verses in Al-Qur’an. This grouping based on mindset similarity among the experts who has a tendency to each groups. This study explores the diversity of responses towards modern science that will be the main reference for the experts to develop the thought of science and religion encounter, particularly in Islam.
