Abstract

Directed by David Fincher, Fight Club (1999) presents a complex and provocative critique of consumer culture, masculinity, and resistance within a postmodern capitalist society. This study examines how the film constructs and destabilizes male identity by employing an integrated framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory, the analysis focuses on how ideological meanings are produced through the interaction of linguistic discourse and cinematic techniques. The findings reveal that consumerism reduces identity to a market-driven commodity, while masculinity is represented as fragmented, unstable, and continuously negotiated through discourse and visual symbolism. Acts of resistance, particularly those embodied by Fight Club and Project Mayhem, are shown to function as contradictory forms of liberation that ultimately reproduce new structures of control. By analyzing dialogue, narration, visual imagery, sound design, and mise-en-scène, this study demonstrates that masculinity in Fight Club operates not merely as a narrative theme but as a discursive formation shaped by power relations across multiple semiotic modes. This research contributes methodologically to film discourse studies by highlighting the analytical value of integrating CDA and MDA in examining ideology, identity, and resistance in contemporary media texts. Abstract

This article explores the representation of disability, identity, and personal agency through the character Hazel Grace Lancaster in the film The Fault in Our Stars (2014). Using the frameworks of Disability Studies, Narrative Prosthesis, and Jungian analytical psychology, the study analyzes how Hazel constructs her identity beyond her illness and how the film challenges traditional portrayals of disability. The findings reveal that Hazel negotiates her self-definition within both the medical and social models of disability, shifting from dependence to self-determination. Through her choices, relationships, and humor, she reclaims agency and resists being confined by her illness. This study concludes that The Fault in Our Stars redefines disability representation in young adult cinema, depicting disabled individuals as complex, autonomous, and emotionally capable.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of errors and the factors causing errors in Japanese sentence writing (sakubun) produced by Class 25A students of the D3 Japanese Language Study Program at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang. The study used a descriptive qualitative method. The research data were obtained from students’ handwritten sakubun assignments on the theme of family and supported by questionnaire responses from 24 students. Data analysis was conducted using language error analysis procedures proposed by Corder and Tarigan, which include data collection, error identification, error classification, error explanation, and error evaluation. Questionnaires were used to identify the factors underlying the writing errors. The results show that three main types of errors were found in students’ sakubun writing: vocabulary writing errors, sentence pattern usage errors, and particle usage errors. The most dominant errors occurred in sentence patterns and particle usage, indicating that students still experience difficulties in mastering basic Japanese grammatical structures. Vocabulary errors were mainly caused by inaccuracies in hiragana writing, while sentence pattern errors were related to inconsistent speech levels and limited understanding of grammatical constructions. Particle usage errors reflect students’ insufficient mastery of particle functions in sentence construction. Furthermore, the questionnaire results indicate that these errors are influenced by limited kanji proficiency, restricted vocabulary, interference from Indonesian, insufficient writing practice, and a lack of detailed instructor feedback. Overall, the findings suggest that both linguistic and pedagogical factors play important roles in students’ sakubun writing performance.

Abstract

This study examines the use of intrinsic elements and narrative structure in the visual novel Fate/Grand Order, Chapter Fuyuki. Using the Freytag Pyramid framework and intrinsic element theory, this descriptive qualitative study aims to understand how classical dramatic structure is implemented in an interactive digital format. Data was collected through direct gameplay observation and verified using archival transcripts from GameFAQs as a supporting primary data source. The results indicate that Chapter Fuyuki consistently applies Freytag's five dramatic stages: exposition, escalation, climax, decay, and resolution. An analysis of intrinsic elements identified five key elements that contribute to narrative structure: plot, characters, setting, conflict, and theme. This visual novel features meaningful character development, symbolic background contrasts, layered conflict, and universal themes such as betrayal, responsibility, sacrifice, and hope. From a literacy perspective, Chapter Fuyuki presents a multimodal environment that strengthens narrative literacy, cultural literacy, critical thinking, and participatory literacy through player interactivity. These findings suggest that visual novels can achieve a level of literary complexity comparable to traditional texts while offering new and relevant forms of narrative engagement in the digital age.
