Abstract

This study aims to assess the prevalence and contributing factors of needlestick and sharps injuries (NSIs) among healthcare workers (HCWs) at Bo Government Hospital, Southeast Sierra Leone. The primary objective is to identify key risk factors and evaluate the effectiveness of current safety protocols in reducing NSI incidents in the main operating theater and theater complex. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving 60 randomly selected HCWs, including doctors, nurses, and support staff. Data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire that addressed demographics, knowledge of blood-borne diseases, adherence to standard precautions, and experience with NSIs. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify trends and associations between NSI occurrences and various occupational factors. The study revealed that 60% of the respondents had experienced NSIs, with a significant proportion attributing incidents to factors such as inadequate training, improper use of protective equipment, and high workload. Despite awareness of reporting mechanisms, only 40% of those affected reported their injuries to the appropriate authorities. The findings highlight the need for enhanced training programs, improved safety protocols, and more robust reporting systems to mitigate the risk of NSIs and ensure the safety of HCWs. This study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to reduce NSIs, thereby protecting HCWs from potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens and improving overall patient care quality in the hospital.

Abstract

The purpose of this single-participant case study, conducted through purposeful sampling and semi-structuredinterviews,is to gain a deep understanding of how Chilean English teachers construct the beliefs that inform their methodology in disadvantagedcontexts.Theinvestigation was guided by the followingquestions: 1. How  do  teachers  construct  their  beliefs  about  English  language  teaching methodology? 2. What types of factors are involved in the construction of those beliefs? The  data  were meticulously collectedand  subsequently thematically analysed. The analysis   identified   six   themes:previous   experience,   social interaction,   teaching   materials,   attitudes   towards   mistakes,   teacher   self-evaluation,  and  challenges  outside  the  classroom.  Although  the  study  confirms the findings of previous studies, two relevant themes, attitudes towards mistakes and  challenges  outside  the  classroom,  emerged  to  contribute  to  the  theoretical development of teachers’methodological beliefs. These two themes stand out as they shed light on how teachers of English in Chile maximisethe classroom time to teach Englishandtreatmistakeswith a positive attitude as a way topromote adaptability and resilience in contexts where speakingEnglish outside the schoolis extremely limited. Unlike previous studiesthat examinedclassroom dynamicsand mistakes in isolation, our study offers fresh insights into the complex world of  methodological  beliefs  among  Chilean  teachers  of  English  in disadvantagedcontexts.Future research should incorporate observations alongside interviews, increase participant numbers for deeper insights, and explore how attitudes and external challenges influence methodology beliefs in ELT

Abstract

The increase in cooking oil prices has become a significant economic issue, considering that cooking oil is one of the strategic commodities among the nine essential goods with many uses. This outreach program aims to provide knowledge on the production of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as a healthier alternative to cooking oil, while also developing the potential of coconut as a source of income for the community in Soponyono Village, Wonosobo District, Tanggamus Regency. The method used was an outreach with a direct demonstration of VCO production, starting with an experiment. This outreach involved 24 participants from the Soponyono Village community and was conducted in person. The results of this program showed that the community gained new knowledge about VCO production, as well as the ability to optimally utilize natural resources, which can improve product quality and increase its market value.

Abstract

The function of reservoirs is crucial for storing water, especially during the rainy season. The ongoing issue at Pogar Reservoir is the barren condition of the area and the limited knowledge among the community regarding the reservoir's role in climate control. Based on these issues, efforts are needed to raise community awareness of the importance of reservoirs through revitalization activities at Pogar Reservoir. The community service method used is the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. This service was carried out by a team in coordination with the local government. Additionally, socialization was conducted to help the community understand the proper management of the reservoir. The revitalization program was then implemented in the areas around the reservoir by planting Petai trees and others. The results of this service were appreciated by the local government and the community, with tree planting in the reservoir area, restoring the reservoir's function as a better-maintained green area, and turning it into a potential village tourism destination that supports local economic growth and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This revitalization also created job opportunities for the local community, and the previously barren reservoir area has become greener and better maintained.

Abstract

Indonesia ranks as the second-largest producer of plastic waste in the world, with plastic taking around 1,000 years to decompose, leading to environmental pollution. One effective solution is the implementation of the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and the production of ecobricks, which can be easily done using available materials and tools. This community service project aims to raise public awareness, particularly in Karang Umpu Village, about using ecobricks to maintain environmental cleanliness and health. The method used is educational outreach, enabling the community to understand how to manage and repurpose plastic waste. The results showed an increase in public knowledge regarding the types, utilization, and management of plastic waste by 85%, compared to 53% before the outreach. With this outreach, the community is expected to be able to manage and repurpose plastic waste through the ecobrick method, preventing waste accumulation and reducing environmental pollution, thereby creating a clean and healthy environment.
