Abstract

This article intended to reveal the description of pre-Islamic women as far as the Qur’an is taken. This was done to provide a foundation of insight that how true Islam greatly elevates the dignity and status of women. Because the discussion in this paper links a theme that is in the Koran, the method used refers to the framework of the interpretation method maudhu’i (thematic). Operationally, in this article verses about pre-Islamic women was inventoried and then organized into several subthemes which all refer to the main theme, namely pre-Islamic women. The results of the discussion by thematizing the verse shows that: first, Islam highly upholds women and gives equal status to men. Second, Islam also gives women adequate and free space to play a role in the public sphere. Third, related to the situation of women in the pre-Islamic era to the extent recorded by the Koran shows that they were oppressed at that time. A number of their rights are not granted or reduced by the ignorance system which is in favor of only men. The culmination of the cruel behavior of the ignorance system towards women is their habit of being surly when their wives give birth to baby girls, even at the extreme level they are buried alive because they are considered disgrace.

Abstract

This article talked about the differing opinions of commentators on dhabīḥullāh by giving more focus to Muqātil bin Sulaymān (d. 150/767). Unlike the general commentators who understood that Ishmael was slaughtered by Ibrahim, Muqātil mentioned the name Ishaq. This name is also mentioned by prominent commentators and historians, al-Ṭabarī, and also by the Old Testament. In addition to considering the narratives mentioned in other parts of the Qur’an, the basis of the opinion of this faction is the various narrations whose numbers actually compete with the narrations of Ishmael as dhabīḥullāh. However, what is interesting is the relationship between these two interpretations with the identity politics of the early Muslim community. By using the documentation method, the writer lists interpretations that appear in several books which for some reasons. The author considered to have represented each century. With this the author discovers a unique distribution of the opinions of dhabīḥ-Ismail. He appeared as an alternative in the early commentaries, and then it became the main narrative in the books that appeared after ibn Kathīr. The loss of this opinion in the commentary books turns out to coincide with the process of the formation of Islamic orthodoxy which could be only a consequence of certain hermeneutic principles or part of the differentiation agenda. This last alternative, if confirmed, can be considered to agree with the opinion of Western scholars about the gradualist of Islamic orthodoxy and furthermore the identity of Islam as a religion.

Abstract

The logical consequence of the revelation pattern which was talked in the books of Qur’anic studies is that revelation (in this case al-Qur’an) seeks dialogue with the social-political dynamic of the Arab community. This thesis requires an understanding of the Qur’an depart from historical study of the verse where spesifically time and place of the verse was revealed. This model of interpretation has been aplied by Muslim scholars to a number of verses for getting a holistic meaning, but still not in the verses of the story. The accentuation of Muslim scholar interpretation tends to jump over one stage then give moral legitimation. By that, Karel Streenbrink initiated the importance of historical analysis/historical explanation of the Qur’anic naratives. This study will discuss the patterns of interpretation and aplication of the theory of Karel Streenbrink in Jesus Verse of the Qur’an. Steenbrink’s explanation to the story of the Qur’an, specially the story of Isa in the Qur’an, indicates the compatibility between the central theme of the story and the situation of da’wah Muhammad. Therefore the interpretation of the verses of the stories must be placed in a historical framework to see the social-psychological impact of the Qur’anic stories on Muhammad and his ummah.

Abstract

Rahmah is a thematic study that has not been maximally touched by Muslims, especially Muslim scholars who specifically pursue the field of interpretation, because the interpretation and understanding of this Rahmah is considered final, but actually if it’s trace in either through a specific interpretation of the study or examining the books of Ulama interpretation which is Mu’tabar, certainly will find many kinds of meanings and interpretations of this Rahmah. In this studies the Rahmah was examined and presented through the perspective by Mufassir of Al-Qur’an namely Quraish Shihab in Tafsir al-Misbah, the point of this research have meaning that is Quraish Shihab interprets about Rahmah is not only to merciful and repayment of Allah in the form of heaven and others, it’s also means something that important in Allah creation as heaven but Rahmah is the inherent characteristic of the giver god who is not limited to something.

Abstract

Edip Yuksel and his colleages considered Qur’an: A Reformist Translation as a progressive work which is different from previous translation in English. One of the verses of the Qur’an that is often misunderstood is QS. al-Ma’idah (5): 38. The verse talks about the punishment for a burglar. All of translator interpret fakt }a’u aidiyahuma > by cutting off hands. However, Yuksel writes different meaning on it. Therefore, this article explains Yuksel’s opinion on the meaning of qata’a in QS. alMa’idah (5): 38 and then, it is analyzed by three functions theory of Gracia namely historical function, meaning function, and implicative function. Word “Qata’a” in the verse, according to Yuksel has three meanings. They are cut or mark hands, cut off hands, and cut off means. Based on analysis by the theory, first, historical function is not used to determine the meaning of the verse because Yuksel denies the elements of out of the Qur’an such as hadis and sirah. Second, the meaning function is Yuksel presents both literal translation and intended meaning. The literal translation is cut off hands, while the intended meaning is cut or mark hands and cut off means. Literal translation is based on intratexts analysis, whereas intended meaning is considering contemporary context. Third, the implicative function is punishments for a burglar other than cutting off hands are acceptable and do not deviate from the original meaning of the verse. The community can choose the most appropriate type of punishment.

Abstract

In addition to regulating human life individually, the Qur’an also regulates human life in community life. The presence of the Qur’an aims to create ummatan wasathan, namely people who call on goodness and prevent evil. This paper discusses Hamka’s interpretation of ummatan wasat}an in the Tafsir Al-Azhar. This paper is a literature study. The author uses descriptive and analytical methods. This paper reveals that Hamka’s interpretation of ummatan wasathan in the Tafsir AlAzhar in general Hamka uses the tahlili method. The form of interpretation is more dominant using the interpretation of bi al-ra’yi. Hamka’s interpretation of ummatan wasat}an is patterned by adabi ijtima’i (social society). Ummatan wasat}an according to Hamka is a people who are in the middle, who do not dissolve in worldly life and do not dissolve in spirituality, and people who always take a straight path (S }ira>t}al Mustaqi>m). The characteristics of ummatan wasath}an are: people who believe in Allah SWT, people who are just, people who have balance, people who have honesty, people who have courage, people who have wisdom, people who uphold the values of brotherhood, and people who take a straight path. The tasks of ummatan wasat }an were: working on amar ma’ruf, nahi munkar, and being a witness for all humans.

Abstract

Generally the miracles of the Prophets are understood to be something sensory, just as the Prophet Musa parted the sea with his staff; Prophet Ibrahim did not feel burning on heat in the embers; Prophet Isa healed the sick and raised the dead. However, according to KH. Bahauddin Nur Salim (Gus Baha’), this understanding needs to be improved, as he conveyed in the Darusan Menara Timur study on May 29, 2019 and published on Youtube. This article will outline the study with content analysis methods using reconstruction theory. From the results of the analysis, it was concluded that from the perspective of Gus Baha’, understanding i’ja>z as something sensory is wrong, especially understanding the miracles of the Qur’an that can be witnessed not by the five senses, but by reasoning and the eyes of the heart (bas }i>rah). Understanding miracles as something unusual and unmatched also needs to be clarified. Because, God’s creations are considered ordinary as mentioned in the QS. Al-Baqarah verse 26- mosquitoes are also Allah’s qudrats that cannot be imitated by humans. Its miracle lies in the ability of reason to understand its awesomeness. The mistake of understanding the concept of i’ja >z can have an impact on the value of faith, because the faith that grows from the ability to witness miracles through prayer will be of higher quality and more lasting than the faith that grows from the ability to witness in the senses.

Abstract

This article discusses the interpretation of the Qur’an al-Maidah: 51 using hermeneutic approach Jorge J.E. Gracia. In the 2017 QS. al-Maidah 51 had become the public spotlight because Tjahaja Basuki Purnama or Ahok offensive called QS. al-Maidah: 51 in a speech in the Pulau Seribu. The incident was directly addressed by several Islamic organizations. So it became a problem in the interpretation of the Qur’an that have an impact on the demo in Jakarta. From this background, the researchers want to try to reinterpret QS. al-Maidah: 51 with a hermeneutic approach Jorge J.E. Gracia. Gracia has three functions in the interpretation namely, the function of the history, the meaning and the implications of function. Without discrediting the fruit functions, theory Gracia was very balanced in the interpretation of the text of the Qur’an. Thus, thus, in the interpretive process is expected to be a study of texts of the Qur’an to make Muslims more grown more in addressing the problems of interpretation, especially in the QS. al-Maidah: 51.
