Abstract

The purpose of this study are to know the appropriate teaching methods used by the lecturers in teaching listening II at an English Language Education Department. This study is conducted due to the reality that students are not interested in listening classes because they face challenging times understanding the audio. This research used descriptive qualitative research. In this case, teaching listening II was investigated by the researcher to explore the teaching methods used by the lecturers. The data of the study were analyzed to report the teaching methods used by the lecturers. The instruments to collect the data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the analysis of teaching methods showed that the lecturers used different methods in teaching listening II. The methods used by the lecturers are: Direct Method, Audio Lingual Method, Grammar Translation Method, and Task-Based Learning. Those methods are appropriate for teaching listening because there are some characteristics and goals in those methods that make the students interested in listening class.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how Aceh Punk community members construct their identity in relation to their historical identity development within the public sphere. The paper also traces back the development of Punk community in Aceh throughout Indonesia’s most important timeline. The article concludes with a brief comment and reflection on the arrest of Punkers in Aceh in 1965. The phenomenon also contests the freedom of expression of a certain subculture community against religious and traditional values adopted in the local community.

Abstract

In general there are four types of language varieties in sociolinguistic study; they are slang, register, jargon, and argot. Jargon is one of language varieties in sociolinguistics. Jargon is the feature of language variety which is used for specific field and just understood by them who stand on those specific fields, but it is not secret. The forms of jargon are abbreviation, acronymn, word, and phrase. This research aimed to know the jargon used in United Indonesia Magazine. In this study, the researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data is several articles publised in the United Indonesia Magazine. The researcher employed a document analysis technique to collect the research data. This technique is carried out by observing and determining the articles which contains Jargon. The result of this research found 8 sport jargons used in the United Indonesia Magazine. From the 8 data, four jargon was in the form of words and four jargon in the form of phrases. This research found some functions of jargon that were giving a person a sense of belonging to a specific group, making it easier for a person to communicate with their group, and as an effective signal for identification.

Abstract

Activities in the implementation of the problem-based learning model train students in finding information independently related to the problems obtained and train students to be able to solve the problems they face in order to develop students' thinking skills. The purpose of this study is to describe what activities can develop students' critical thinking skills in implementing the PBL model. The method used in this research is a case study in qualitative research by collecting data using self-observation (video recorder). The data collection technique used to obtain the data on the implementation of problem-based learning model in developing students’ critical thinking by doing the activities in learning. The result showed that the activities in problem-based learning model can be implemented in developing students’ critical thinking. This is supported by observational data from self-observation on students’ activities and responses to the implementation of problem-based learning model.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to report how high school students use movies as a strategy to practice English pronunciation. This research is a qualitative research with a case study design. The subject of this research involved 29 students from a SMK in Bogor. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interview. The results show that students’ strategies in learning anad practicing English pronunciation using moviesinvolve (1) The watching movies frequency (2) the use of Indonesian subtitles (3) the use of English subtitles (4)  note-taking for newly discovered vocabulary. In accordance with the results of this study, practicing pronunciation using movies really helps students in learning English pronunciation.
