Abstract

Achieving equivalence is a significant issue in translation work. However, since one language is different in many aspects from other languages, non-equivalence is inevitable in the process of translation. Non-equivalence arises when the target language cannot provide equal meaning to the source-language text. By applying the framework proposed by Baker (2011), this research was designed using descriptive qualitative method to find out the cases of non-equivalence at word level in the translation of Negeri 5 Menara. The results showed 55 cases of non-equivalence at the word level were found. The cases were classified into seven out of eleven categories; (1) culture-specific concept with eight cases, (2) non-lexicalized source language concept with three cases, (3) different distinction in meaning with nine cases, (4) target language lacks superordinate with one case, (5) target language lacks hyponym with 15 cases, (6) differences in expressive meaning with eight cases, and (7) the use of loan word in the source text with 11 cases. Additionally, the findings also exposed 21 cases that were not categorized into Baker’s (2011) types of non-equivalences at the word level. It was suggested that future researches discuss the topic of non-equivalence words by applying other translation theories aside from Baker’s in order to cover the issue of uncategorized cases found in this study. It is important for translators to understand the contribution of equivalency in both source and target language so that the potential of misinterpretation was avoidable.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe a language development at a very young age. The method of the study was descriptive method. The data was collected from NR who was 1.2 years old girl. In collecting the data, the researcher observed her interaction at home and interviewed NR and her mother. Every word the researchers understand from her was written down, described, and classified. From the data, the researcher concluded that NR understood and spoke both languages equally. She used the same amount of words from both Bahasa Indonesia and Acehnese. She also showed the ability to differentiate between the two languages when she talked. She can easily switch from one language to another depend on who she was taking to. This shows an early sign of bilingualism.

Abstract

Instagram is now a photo and video-sharing social media platform used around the world, and English is increasingly used in captions by non-English speaking Instagram users. This study was aimed to figure out why students at Serambi Mekkah University write English captions on Instagram. This study involved 30 students majoring in English at the University of Serambi Mekkah. The research design used was a descriptive study. To collect data, a close-ended yes-no question questionnaire was distributed online through Google Form. The questionnaire measured the responses in terms of English learning and self-image factors. The results show that the reason students of Serambi Mekkah University used English in their Instagram captions is mainly driven by their need of improving their English proficiency, specifically the spelling and vocabulary. The self-image factor plays a relatively important role too, as half of the participants confessed that they used English in their Instagram post for the sake of being regarded cool and creative. This study suggests that EFL learners use social media not only to improve their English but also to show people their competency in using English.

This study belonged to experimental study. The population of this study was all of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of this study was taken randomly with the total of 70 students, 35 students in experimental group and 35 students in control group. Choosing class as experimental and control group was also done randomly. The data were gotten through test; pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 18.0. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh who are taught reading comprehension by using MIT strategy and those who are taught without using MIT strategy. It can be proven from the result of this study, where the result of t-test of post-test for both group was 3.07. While the result of  t-table with the level of significance 0.05 was 0.67. Thus, t-test (3.07) was greater than the t-table (0.67). Based on the result of the study, English teachers of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh, especially those who teach reading comprehension, should implement MIT strategy in teaching and learning process because the implementation of the strategy can increase the students’ reading comprehension mastery.
