Abstract

Mathematics is still seen as a non-cultural subject. Mathematics and culture are two aspects that have a strong relationship. Culture provides a natural means for students to access a framework for conceptual understanding in mathematics. One of the important cultural objects in Indonesia is the Phinisi. The phinisi is a traditional wooden ship originating from Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi province which is recorded as a world cultural heritage. This study explores the concept of ethnomathematics geometry on phinisi ships. The method used in this research is an exploratory-descriptive method through an ethnographic approach to explain and analyze the ethnomathematical concepts of geometry on the components of the phinisi. Research data were collected through a literature review, direct observation of the shape and process of making phinisi, and interviews with expert phinisi shipbuilders. The results showed that there are geometric ethnomathematical concepts in the form of flat shapes and spatial shapes on several phinisi components. This ethnomathematical concept is relevant to the formal mathematical concepts learned in school so it has the potential to be a source of learning mathematics.

Abstract

The ability to think creatively mathematically of students is relatively low.The purpose of this research is to determine whether employing the Liveworksheets-assisted Problem Based Learning technique influences students' mathematics ability to think creatively. This study used quantitative research methods and a non-equivalent post-test only control group design. The sampling technique employs non-probability sampling. The sample for this study consisted of two classes with 71 students. The normality and homogeneity tests are used in quantitative research as part of the preconditioning test. In this study, the hypothesis was tested using an independent sample test. This study's findings illustrate students' mathematics creative thinking ability in experimental classrooms influenced by the usage of the Problem Based Learning model using liveworksheets. This demonstrates that the experimental class's students have a greater potential for mathematical creative thinking ability than the control class. The application of problem based learning models assisted by liveworksheets influences the student’s mathematical creative thinking ability.

Abstract

Metacognition generally has two essential components: metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive awareness. Unfortunately, research that focuses on and explores the description of metacognitive knowledge and its implications for the academic success of prospective science teacher students is still rare. The current study aimed to explore (1) the baseline levels of metacognitive knowledge (MK) among prospective science teachers (PST), (2) the relationship between the extent of MK and academic success, and (3) the potential differences in MK based on gender. The correlational research with the survey method was used in the study. The study involved 206 (male: 93 and female: 113) prospective science teachers who participated in a fundamental physics course at Mandalika University of Education as a sample. Data on MK was collected using twenty items of essay tests that are valid and reliable to collect PSTs’ MK. In contrast, PSTs’ learning success data was collected using instruments used in mid-semester examinations and practical laboratory test results. The data was further analyzed descriptively and statistically using the ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests. The result shows that PSTs’ MK is in the low category (MK<60). Additionally, male prospective science teachers demonstrated better declarative (mean: 59.247; p < 0.05) and procedural knowledge (mean: 64.482; p < 0.05) indicators, and MK positively correlates in each indicator. Based on the findings, it is evident that PSTs' MK significantly differs between males and females, the positive correlations between MK indicators, and potentially impact teaching practices and cognitive outcomes. Furthermore, future research needs to develop effective interventions, learning models, and instructional practices to enhance metacognitive skills and science learning outcomes in teacher education.

Abstract

This study delves into the impact of Entrepreneurship Education Programs (EEPs) at universities on fostering students' entrepreneurial interests, employing a qualitative approach to gauge the effectiveness of these programs. Through in-depth interviews with 20 students participating in an EEP at a private university, the research uncovers a significant gap between the theoretical knowledge imparted by these programs and the practical skills and motivations needed to pursue entrepreneurship. The findings reveal that while students value the theoretical underpinnings of entrepreneurship taught in these programs, the lack of hands-on, experiential learning opportunities and direct engagement with successful entrepreneurs leaves them feeling underprepared and insufficiently inspired to embark on entrepreneurial ventures. Students expressed a strong desire for EEPs to incorporate more real-world applications, such as internships, project collaborations, and mentorship from seasoned entrepreneurs, to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical entrepreneurial experience. The study concludes with recommendations for universities to redesign EEPs to include a greater emphasis on experiential learning and engagement with the entrepreneurial ecosystem, aiming to better equip students with the entrepreneurial mindset, skills, and networks necessary to succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavors. By highlighting these insights, the study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the optimization of entrepreneurship education to more effectively cultivate the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, underscoring the need for a more integrated approach that balances theoretical knowledge with practical application and inspiration.

Abstract

Global warming is a material presented at the VII grade junior high school level. This material is very complex so it causes different interpretations by everyone when teaching it. Therefore, this research aims to analyze teachers' interpretations of the depth and breadth of global warming material contained in KD 3.9 of the 2013 Curriculum. This research was conducted descriptively using the Content Representation instrument to obtain information about teachers' interpretations. Participants in this study were junior high school 11  science teachers who are members of the MGMP community in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi. The results of this study indicate that teachers interpret KD 3.9 quite completely. This was obtained from the CoRe instrument where teachers fill in essential concepts to teach global warming material. The results show that teachers with more than 10 years of teaching experience have a greater variety of teaching methods and assessments in teaching global warming material. In addition, global warming materials were also obtained based on their depth and breadth.

Abstract

Climate variability in Indonesia is influenced by several global factors including El Niño Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole, one consequence of climate variability is drought. The drought index is used to identify and describe the level of drought in an area, the methods used in this study are the Standardized Precipitation Index and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index which are calculated based on climate data with a span of 24 years as many as 67 rain observation posts in North Sumatra using R Studio software. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors of global climate phenomena that affect drought in North Sumatra and its impact on rice crop productivity and analyze drought characteristics spatially and temporarily. The resulting index values are then analyzed using correlation methods to see their relationship with ENSO and IOD. The results showed that the incidence of the ENSO phenomenon had a very strong relationship with meteorological drought in North Sumatra with a correlation value range of -0.85 to -0.97, and as many as 62.5% of 32 districts experienced a decrease in rice crop productivity during El Niño with strong intensity in 2015.

Abstract

The areas of Medan and Deli Serdang have complex topography, stretching from the slopes of Bukit Barisan Mountains to the east coast of North Sumatera. This condition causes Medan and Deli Serdang areas frequently form convective clouds that produce rain and lightning. This research utilizes Cloud to Ground (CG) lightning data and rainfall from 2019-2022 to analyse the characteristics and relationship between lightning and rainfall in Medan and Deli Serdang. CG lightning data is obtained from Lightning Detector equipment with a 10 km radius to avoid noise and obtain better data. Rainfall data above 50 mm/day (heavy rain) is used, which is obtained from 3 rain gauges locations. The study results showed that there was an increase in lightning events along with an increase of rainfall which showed almost the same pattern of peak activity from lightning and rainfall. The correlation between heavy rainfall and CG lightning, in the Medan and Deli Serdang areas are moderate positive, around r=0.566 for CG-, r=0.567 for CG+ and r= 0.576 for total CG. The highest correlation in Sunggal Rain Station is r = 0.947, in Deli Serdang Climatological Station is r = 0.950 and in the Kualanamu Meteorological Station is r = 0.932.
