Abstract

To reflect Trent University’s academic leadership in environmental and indigenous studies, Trent has undertaken a collaborative campus stewardship and land-use planning process that prioritizes collection of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) and engagement with the local First Nations. Trent’s Symons campus is rich in natural and cultural assets, with drumlins, wetlands, woodlands, meadows and farmland, and diverse flora and fauna. A primary goal of the campus plan is to conserve biological diversity, maintain ecological functions, and sustain ecosystem services across more than 560 hectares, whilst enabling campus expansion and joint benefit infrastructure projects to move forward efficiently and effectively. Trent’s experience in bringing ITK to the forefront of campus stewardship and land-use planning warrants critical examination to advance promising practices for conservation of biodiversity through a collaborative approach to planning

Abstract

The process of greening education is aimed to educate new generation with the holistic vision of the real world challenges, attitudes of responsibility and active social behavior as an agent of sustainability transformations. The methodological and didactic aspects of comprehensive greening of educational process discussed. It’s based on integration the competence and the whole school approaches, sustainable life style and green campus practices into sustainable university model. The preconditions for systemic and holistic integration of the sustainability principles into all fields of the university life are identified. Especial attention is paid to the recent experiences of the Ukrainian National Forestry University as the leading university in Ukraine in implementing the concept of greening higher education in Ukraine and member of new networking project “V4 Green Universities” supported by the Visegrad Fund.

Abstract

Recently we conducted a study to evaluate the existing solid waste management practices at Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Karachi which shows that the institute possesses best management practices related to solid waste collection, transport, segregation, recycling/reuse, and final disposal. Adequate number of color-coded bins have been laid at appropriate locations throughout the university campus. Institute has enough staff for waste management including waste collection, transportation, and disposal. Results of our study indicate that about 2,033 kg of solid waste/month (24.5 tons/annum) is generated from the IoBM campus. Out of the total, about 67.8 % is the recyclable and reusable plastic, paper, and metal waste while, the remaining (about 32%) is mostly organic waste generated from various facilities of the university. Economic analysis indicates that about 252,012 Pak rupees annually are earned from selling the recyclable and reusable inorganic solid waste. Study also indicate that about 500 kg of good quality compost per month can be prepared from the organic waste including food and yard waste that can be used for existing horticultural activities at the university. Abstract

The use of green campus practices by the State University of land use planning promotes a culture of sustainable development for all stakeholders. One of the forms of interaction was the scientific and educational base (SEB) Gornoye. The territory of the SEB "Gornoye" combines unique physical, geographical and agricultural features necessary for performing the educational, scientific, applied, research and production functions of the Department and is designed to ensure the sustainable development of natural territories.

Abstract

A green physical setting would need green behavior and culture to sustain and function properly. Education is a key component to form a sustainable mindset and lifestyle for society, especially youth. As a university with a vision to be a resilient and healthy campus, Universitas Gadjah Mada has actively involved in providing education for sustainable development. The activities have commenced since 2016 through Integrated Smart and Green Building research group and involve participants from both internal and external audiences. Internal target audiences were primarily freshman UGM students and later extended to include primary and high school students. External audiences were the government and stakeholders from the commercial sector. The program was designed to increase awareness on sustainable development and encourage everyone to take part to achieve its goals. Students were educated on the importance of sustainable lifestyle and expected to practice green behavior in their daily life. For stakeholders, a focus group discussion was organized to start a conversation for the formulation of green building regulation. There were observable immediate changes in cognitive and behavorial domain toward sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable development is a long term vision and it needs participation from everyone. Higher education as a center of knowledge should actively provide society with education to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) declared itself as a conservation university with 3 main pillars, namely: (1) values and character, (2) arts and culture, and (3) natural resources and physical environment. UNNES believes the environmental crisis cannot be overcome only through practical and technical actions but it also attempts to change the way humans view and behave towards the environment. One indicator of natural resources pillars and the environment is green transportation. To implement green transportation, UNNES develops an internal transportation system to guide the use of vehicles, roads and parking areas on the campus. The use of regulated vehicles included motorized and non-motorized vehicles. The target of implementing a green transportation system was to reduce emissions in the campus environment to a minimum level. Motorized vehicles must obey the directional traffic signs applied in the campus environment and be only allowed to park in designated parking areas. Sufficient space for bicycle traffic, environmentally-friendly vehicles, and pedestrians on the sideways were preferred. Motor vehicle noise levels must not exceed 55 dB. Special vehicle traffic, among others, such as garbage transporters, watering plants, fire engines, and special-licensed vehicles were regulated under applicable regulations. Inspection tasks were carried out by security vehicles that can go through all roads in the campus environment in the direction of the designated lane, except in unlikely emergencies. Environmentally-friendly vehicles in the form of electric and non-fossil cars operated on Monday-Friday from 6:00 to 18:00 and were free. Markings with different colors, and bicycle lanes were used to differentiate between motorized vehicles. Campus parking points consisted of a central parking point and several auxiliary parking units. The central parking in the Multi-purpose Building was used for motorized vehicles or bicycles and was guarded 24 hours. Meanwhile, the auxiliary parking units were located in each work unit area which also had a security system. People with disabilities were facilitated through special signposts.

Abstract

In the Twentieth century transportation has been one of the most impactful drivers for economic and social development, while nowadays, it appears as a major cause of environmental and social problems. Even worse, the more transportation has become a relevant part in daily life and business, the more it is blamed for problems such as traffic congestion, car accidents, social economic inequality, energy consumption and pollution. Transportation is in fact caught in a vicious circle. Urban planning is forced to reduce transition costs, transforming cities in a sort of social network, and in parallel to orient mobility towards sustainability, both capable to convey socioeconomic development. Within this context, the University of Bologna has chosen a sustainable approach for its Multi-campus territorial structure, applying several sustainable mobility policies regarding public transportation, cycling, electric/hybrid car fleet and walking accessibility. The paper purpose is to show significative links between sustainable policy application and modal share, using data from an online survey submitted to university staff and students. Even gender influence on modal share has been investigated.

Abstract

The transportation system generally contributes with the largest share of Greenhouse Gases Emissions (GHG) among economic activities, which includes the high level of gas emissions from the transport system in the GHC Inventory from Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Guided by its socio-environmental agenda, the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), has sought to implement integrated programs to encourage the use of alternative transportation in order to mitigate the impacts of urban mobility on the atmosphere since 2010. Free parking and shower facilities for cyclists, as well as pedestrian friendly sites and limited vehicle parking area inside the campus are some of the welcomed interventions implemented by PUC-Rio. In addition, the institution has collaborated technically with the public authorities to enable the arrival of good quality mass transportation to the University neighborhood. Even facing limited mass public transportation in the surroundings of the main campus, PUC-Rio has implemented a series of transportation initiatives that rely on the commitment and partnership of its community (students, professors and staff), who strongly support new solutions for sustainable development and contribute to the improvement of PUC-Rio transportation performance

Abstract

University of Kashan was founded in 1974 and is the oldest institution of higher education in Kashan. Kashan (33° 58' 59" N / 51° 25' 56" E) climate is classified as a hot and dry by the Köppen-Geiger system. This climate causes a large amount of energy consumption for University at springs and summers. On the other hand, it means that sun is shining strongly for more than 6 months and University of Kashan has been working on some solutions to use solar energy and decrease dependency on the old fossil-fuel energy system. The current paper studies some of the main activities of University of Kashan on Energy Saving and Renewable Energy Production programs such as CCHP plant (The first Combined Cool, Heat, and Power plant in Iran), using solar panels and energy-efficient appliances.

Abstract

Solutions to sustainable development (SD) challenges are complex and context-specific. Ozyegin University (OzU) created a structure to manage all its sustainability endeavours aligned with these two facts. To this end, OzU first understood the priorities of Turkey to achieve SD in terms of SDGs.  Subsequently, the university conducted a self-assessment to determine the SDGs that it is most competent at.  By combining these two analyses, OzU determined the areas in which it can have the highest impact in the SD of Turkey. In conducting these analyses, a holistic approach was adopted, to consider the interconnectedness of the SDGs. The tools of the network analysis were employed to address the intertwined relationships among the SDGs. The analysis revealed four domains which led to the creation of four Sustainability Clusters. The clusters are positioned under the newly established Sustainability Platform managing and combining all the sustainability endeavors in relation with both these domains and otherwise. In this paper, the creation of processes of Sustainability Platform and Sustainability Clusters the structures which aim to contribute to the SD of Turkey will be elaborated.  Practical insights will be developed based on this structure
