Abstract

It is of no doubt that the pandemic had and still has a great impact on all the spheres of human activities. The situation has changed the traditional way of life and we have to get used to the new “normality”. Given the unusual and never experienced circumstances, educational institutions all over the world have been forced to establish new ways out and paths to keep the balance and be sustainable. Despite the various obstacles, universities around the globe are still fighting for the SDG 4 and seeking appropriate solutions for achieving this and other goals. Research and education practices have undergone consequential changes which can be positive or negative. In the case of Volgograd State University the authors will try to get the reader acquainted with its best practices that have been implemented to support the students, the faculty and administrative staff during this fluctuating period and go on achieving SDG 4.Keyword: sustainable development, sustainable education, SDG 4, green thinking, green education

Abstract

It is estimated that the amount of water needed by Universitas Diponegoro will increase in the years to come. Several efforts are required to ensure the fulfillment of water needed while also considering its sustainability. There have been studies on water conservation at the industrial level. Still, limited studies have discussed this problem in Indonesia specifically at university level. Therefore, this study discusses the water conservation program at Universitas Diponegoro that might be used as a reference for other universities to address water supply problems. This study aims to discuss in depth water conservation efforts at Universitas Diponegoro. This study incorporates a descriptive-qualitative approach along with direct observation. Some programs on water supply have been implemented in Universitas Diponegoro such as conservation, treated water consumed, water recycling and water-efficiency. The existence of rainwater harvesting tanks (RWH), reservoirs, biopores, wastewater treatment plans (WWTPs) and ponds are among the efforts that have been applied at Universitas Diponegoro in order to conserve the water. To date, Universitas Diponegoro has successfully conserved more than 75% of the water, recycling about >50% of wastewater, installing about >50% of water-saving equipment, and has treated clean water into drinking water using reverse osmosis.Keyword: water, conservation, sustainability, campus

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a series of challenges to the academic community. Social distancing measures imposed the interruption of face-to-face activities besides the implementation of remote work and online classes. For safe and gradual return, the monitoring of individuals, quick detection of infection, contact tracing, and isolation of those infected became essential. In this sense, we developed strategies to face the pandemic at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) - Brazil. A Telemedicine Program (TeleCovid) and the assemblage of a laboratory for SARS-CoV-2 molecular diagnosis (LabCovid) were essential measures for monitoring, preventing, and controlling outbreaks at the university. TeleCovid works with a team of students who guide and answer questions regarding COVID-19 and, when necessary, make the referral for online consultation with medical professionals. In the suspicion of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the doctor refers the patient for testing at LabCovid. LabCovid performs the sample collection using nasal swabs, followed by processing samples by the RT-qPCR method. We have placed all positive patients in isolation and tested their contacts. This approach meant that positive cases were identified early, thus avoiding outbreaks in different environments in face-to-face activities.Keyword: Covid-19; university, RT-qPCR

Abstract

In a moment of change, with an impulse from the pandemic that hit the world, the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals has become a clear necessity towards a more sustainable world, with less inequalities and a basis for the upbringing of future generations. SDG Goal 12 Sustainable Consumption and Production, 13 - Climate Action - and 14 - Life below water - are clearly linked to plastic and metal consumption and production. Also, Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities - plays its paper in this field. Not only does plastic and metal production, consumption and use need to be reformed, but also producers need to bridge inequalities and reuse, recycle and introduce circular economies in their own countries, not inducing mass imposition of waste in poorer economies. With this in mind, at the University of Aveiro, the REAP Project (Recycling of PET and Aluminium Packages) is being implemented, together with a Norwegian partner, with vast experience in the plastic waste sector. This project will help create the idea of PET and aluminium impact from a tax on these packages inside campi walls and a tax return after adequate deposition. Tracking these numbers and promoting research in the area of PET and aluminium reuse are a further input towards the implementation of SDGs.The paper will explain the project, its goals and ambitions.Keyword: PET, Can, SDG Goals, circular economy

Abstract

The global situation of the Covid-19 pandemic has changed several aspects of University life and management. In this context, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore) has introduced a new course for all of its students called "Transversal Skills on Sustainability". This course consists of 13 Modules offered by the various Unimore Departments to address the issue of Sustainability at 360 degrees. Each Department offers a thematic module concerning Sustainability in its own field of study and research. The course ranges from engineering issues with renewable energy, waste, air quality, to economics and sustainable finance. In addition, the course deals with issues related to sustainability in the medical, chemical and legal fields and many others. In this first year of delivery, this teaching has proven to be highly appreciated among students. Over 950 students have enrolled in teaching for the 2020/2021 academic year. Enrolled students come from all areas of the university: there are students of engineering, geology, economics, chemistry, but also of medicine, pharmacy, and many others.Keyword: Education, Sustainability, Multidisciplinary, global approach

Abstract

The harnessing of renewable energies and mitigation of climate change are like two faces of a coin. Decentralized implementation and individual-level practices of eco-friendly strategies contribute a lot on a global scale. In this context, Mangalore University on its headquarters Mangalagangotri campus, adopted and implemented many eco-friendly activities, technologies, and policies for sustainable development. Installation of solar power panels for electricity generation, of the current estimated value of 23,13,311 kWh/month; replacement of incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs with an energy saving of around 62% and procurement of most energy-efficient electronic & electrical appliances (47%) are some of the technologies that have been implemented for energy conservation. Implementation of e-Governance and e-Office program of Govt of Karnataka, and campus management system, social media, and email-based official communications have significantly reduced the usage of papers (>70% ); a complete ban on single-use plastics; recycling of organic wastes through vermicomposting, pot-composting, biogas production; encouraging electric vehicles are some of the adopted strategies. Altogether these strategies have significantly reduced the release of greenhouse gases in and around the campus in our efforts to join with global efforts to drop carbon footprint below 2 tons by 2050. The rainwater harvesting through the rooftop catchments and check-dams contributed to ≈ 50% water conservation. The campus comprises 32.4% of its total area with natural vegetation (463192 m2) and currently with 30.8% planted vegetation (439670 m2) of the total area (1428540 m2). The campus biodiversity was further enriched by periodical tree plantation drives with special reference to the planting of fruit-yielding saplings. As an Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR), the university has been making efforts to disseminate the knowledge of eco-friendly practices, by conducting public awareness programs and publishing popular articles in regional language. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and government-imposed lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, the University has continued eco-friendly activities and setting up of infrastructures, by strictly following safety guidelines. Overall, our continued holistic approaches of various eco-friendly strategies, in terms of the utility of advanced technologies, eGovernance, solar energy, and rainwater harvesting, organic wastes management, recycling of solid wastes, and many others, have been implemented since its inception have significantly helped in saving energy and reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.Keyword: Climate change; Eco-friendly strategies; Carbon footprint; Greenhouse gases

Abstract

University of West Attica operates in three Campuses, all within the metropolitan region of Attica, indicating that the mobility characteristics of these campuses are similar to urban models and in most cases, could be used as a test area for mobility policies related to public transport, multimodality or transport restrictions. Within the Cοvid-19 period, University of West Attica made important progress in transport related issues that are very critical for the smooth operation of the campuses and the University as a whole. The key transport related good practices refer to several thematic areas including parking management, soft modes infrastructure, public transport, car related issues, road infrastructure, environment, and energy. All these key interventions have a positive impact not only for the members of the academic society of University of West Attica but also to the mobility characteristics of West and Central Attica where university campuses are located and interact with Attica residents and tourists.Keyword: University of West Attica, Campus, Urban Mobility, Transport, Parking

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions play a key role in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through teaching and learning, research as well as community services. COVID-19 Pandemic outbreak requires certain and special methods in conducting education systems especially in teaching and learning process as well as administrative affairs. Online system has become the most popular and preferable since March 2020 when lockdown enforcement was implemented at the University of Medan Area (UMA). It is much easier today at the UMA because an online system has been introduced for years before the outbreak. Abstract

The category of setting and infrastructure indicator (SI) is chosen in this comparative study referring to the fact file scores obtained by the University of Babylon during the last four participations into the UI Green Metric Rankings. In general, the scores indicated an escalation in the university performance of the whole six sub-indicators of the setting and infrastructure criterion (SI) from 2017-2020. These results confirmed that the university; by its leadership, staff and students, focused on upgrading and developing its infrastructure for setting a green and safe educational environment for most employees and students. That is to achieve a green campus contributing in the global efforts for achieving the UN agenda of SDGs 2015-2030. Furthermore, all practices of university performance coped with its vision, mission, and objective goals of university strategic plan from 2018-2022, which contained the commitments to set up with most of SDGs, especially related to sustainable cities or campuses. The results also showed an ascending and remarkable progress from 2017 to 2020 with an unexpected regression in 2019, which required the development of an improvement plan to address weaknesses, maintain and enhance strengths, to get good results for university in the 2020 edition of UI GreenMetric Ranking. Keyword: Green university, practices, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SI, setting and infrastructure indicator, University of Babylon.

Abstract

Pakistan is on verge of facing severe water scarcity issues by 2025. An exponential increase in population increases the water demand as most of the population in the country depends on groundwater. Over extraction of groundwater is causing depletion in the groundwater table at an alarming rate. Water conservation is becoming the need of time. Rainwater Harvesting is one the best methods that can be used to conserve water. This paper aims to determine the total volume of water that can be conserved from Rainfall on the Rooftop at the University of Faisalabad, Amin Campus located in an industrial city Faisalabad, Pakistan. For this purpose, water usage on the campus is estimated. The area of the campus rooftop is measured by conducting a topographic survey. Rainfall data from the year 1981-2021 is collected and average monthly rainfall is calculated. The soil Conservation Service Curve Number method is adopted to calculate the run-off. Results indicated that about 1300 cubic meters of water can be conserved per year which will cover about 20-25 percent of the total water demand of the campus if a Rainwater Harvesting System is installed at the campus.Keyword: Rainwater Harvesting, Water Conservation, Water Scarcity
