Abstract

ABSTRACTThe study was conducted to observe the haemoglobin level in pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patient in therapeutic period who received anti tuberculose drugs. Hemoglobin level of Thirty Pulmonary TB patients was examined each month, before receiving any therapy and after the medications was given. Hemoglobin level measurement was continued until the third month of therapy. The observation held at Haji Abdul Halim Hasan Public Health Center in Binjai showed that the hemoglobin level was significantly decrease with the time in pulmonary TB patient especially at the third month of therapy both in male and female patients.

Abstract

This reseach aims to determine the presence of Salmonella sp. In chicken meat sold in both markets. The study was conducted by taking samples of chicken meat in each market as much as 50 grams. In the Sukaramai market, samples were taken from three locations, namely location I, II, III and one location from Carrefour supermarket. The bacteria contamination test was performed by counting the number of bacteria each sample with Plat Count Agar (PCA) method, each sample was diluted and cultured on 10-1 dilution. Deuteronomy is done four times. Then proceed with biochemical test. The results showed that all four samples of Salmonella sp. From Sukaramai traditional market contaminated with pathogen bacteria with the average amount of Salmonella as much as 1.7 X 102 from the overall location I, II, and III and also found contaminant bacteria that can be a pathogen while from Carrefour supermarkets not found Salmonella.

Abstract

A pharmacy, aside from being a pharmaceutical care provider is also a functioning business. Thus, in the scope of business, pharmacy performance can be analysed using liquidity, activity, and profitability ratios. This study aimed to determine the performance of Pharmacy X based on a financial perspective before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is a descriptive cross-sectional study that employed data obtained from sales and purchase records. The data were analysed using financial ratio analysis methods, including liquidity, activity, and profitability ratios. This study was conducted at Pharmacy X based on the amount of prescription and non-prescription income from before the COVID-19 pandemic (in 2019) and during the pandemic (in 2020). The results showed that Pharmacy X was not good at managing its current assets and current liabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the results for the ratios of total asset turnover and fixed asset turnover, asset utilisation was less efficient. Analysis of the probability ratios and net profit margin showed a decrease in Pharmacy X’s profit during the pandemic. The Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and Return on Investment (ROI) values indicated that the business was less able to generate profits and net income from its invested capital.

Abstract

Orangutans are the only great apes that inhabit Sumatra and Borneo, but the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) is critically endangered due to health-related issues. Orangutans in zoos or captivity face a higher risk of parasitic infections compared to those in their natural habitats. This is attributed to the unsuitable environmental conditions, such as confined enclosures that restrict their movements and daily activities. Conservation efforts are crucial to prevent orangutan extinction, including ex-situ conservation at Medan Zoo. However, ex-situ conservation also poses the risk of infection by soil-transmitted helminths, nematodes that require soil to reach their infective stage. This research aims to identify the species of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in Bornean orangutan fecal samples and assess the level of infection. The research method involves descriptive analysis and fecal examination using the native method with six fecal samples from two orangutan individuals. The results revealed the presence of three types of soil-transmitted helminth eggs in both orangutans: Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Necator americanus. The infection level falls into the moderate category (500-5000 eggs).

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is commonly referred to as The Silent Killer because this disease can affect all organs of the body and cause some various symptoms, one of them is in the urinary tract. When the blood glucose levels are high (glucosuria), the excess will be excreted through the urine. In patients with glucosuria, it will cause an increase in urin leukocytes or is called leukocyturia. This research is entitled Analysis of Urin Leukocyte Count of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus at Estomihi Hospital, Medan City. The purpose of this study was to determine the number of urin leukocytes in patients with diabetes mellitus at Estomihi Hospital, Medan City. This study used a descriptive method by means of laboratory examinations to determine the number of urin leukocytes in patients with diabetes mellitus at Estomihi Hospital. The results of study showed that there was an increase in the number of urin leukocytes in patients with diabetes mellitus at Estomihi Hospital. From a total of 30 urin samples from diabetes mellitus patients, 12 people (40%) had normal urine leukocyte counts, and 18 people (60%) suffered from leukocyturia. The results of observations based on gender for female patients detected greater leukocyturia in the amount of 66.7%. Based on the results of the analysis of Personal hygiene effect on the incidence of leukocyturia in patients with diabetes mellitus at Estomihi Hospital, Medan City.

Abstract

Air pollution, primarily originating from transportation and industrial activities, has become a major concern in the context of environmental health. This study aims to investigate the relationship between air pollution and the morphological characteristics of leaves as well as the stomatal density of the pulutan plant (Urena lobata L.) in polluted environments within the industrial area of Medan and unpolluted environments in Percut Sei Tuan, Medan, North Sumatra. The research method employed is ex-post facto with a laboratory approach to the polluted industrial area. Experimental results indicate that the stomatal density on pulutan leaves in the polluted area, specifically in the Industrial Zone of Medan, is 17.27/mm2, whereas in the unpolluted area, namely Percut Sei Tuan, it is 896.81/mm2. This difference provides insights into the negative impacts of air pollution on pulutan plants, highlighting the importance of maintaining air quality for ecosystem health and human well-being.

Abstract

Andaliman seeds contain compounds such as alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, tannins, phenols, flavonoids, steroids, oils, and fats. Ginger rhizomes contain alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, triterpenoids, and saponins. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Andaliman seed and ginger rhizome extracts against Staphylococcus sp. The method used is a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with varying extract concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Distilled water is used as a negative control and chloramphenicol as a positive control, with three repetitions for each treatment. The results show that Andaliman seed extract can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus sp., with the largest inhibition zone at a 100% concentration (3.2 mm) and the smallest at 25% (1.3 mm). For ginger rhizome extract, the largest inhibition zone is also at a 100% concentration (2.5 mm) and the smallest at 25% (1.1 mm). ANOVA and LSD tests indicate significant differences in the inhibition zone diameters across extract concentrations, with the 75% concentration showing the best results.

Abstract

Blood glucose level represents the amount of sugar circulating in the bloodstream, originating from the breakdown of carbohydrates consumed in food and stored in the form of glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles. Factors influencing blood glucose levels include dietary patterns, lifestyle, changes in body weight, age, and level of physical activity. Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to assess an individual's nutritional status by comparing their weight and height. This research was conducted to investigate the correlation between blood glucose levels and BMI among adolescents at the Adolescent Integrated Health Service Post in Jati Utomo Sub-District, Binjai City. Involving 30 adolescents, this study employed tests of normality and Spearman correlation analysis to analyze the data. The research findings indicate a strong correlation between BMI and blood glucose levels, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.67. This suggests that higher BMI correlates with higher blood glucose levels, providing valuable insights into the relationship between BMI and metabolic health in adolescents.
