Abstract

English television shows have become a ubiquitous source of authentic language input for learners and a rich dataset for researchers investigating real-world language use. This review synthesizes recent studies on the pragmatic and sociolinguistic aspects of language in English TV shows with particular attention to their implications for applied linguistics and language pedagogy. The review examines peer-reviewed journal articles, books and conference proceedings published between 2000 and 2025, using thematic analysis to identify patterns, benefits, challenges and research gaps. Key findings indicate that television dialogue abundantly represents pragmatic features such as speech acts (requests, apologies, refusals, compliments), politeness strategies, conversational implicature, idiomatic expressions and turn-taking mechanisms. Additionally, sociolinguistic dimensions including dialectal variation, social class markers, gender differences, age-related variation and context-driven style-shifting are systematically portrayed. While television dialogue shares many features with natural conversation, it also exhibits stylized characteristics such as reduced overlap, clearer turn boundaries less repetition and raising questions about authenticity. Pedagogically, English TV shows can develop learners' pragmatic competence, enhance sociolinguistic awareness, teach formulaic language, improve listening comprehension and increase motivation. However, the literature has notable limitations including small sample sizes, a bias toward American and British sitcoms, insufficient attention to sociocultural context, a lack of longitudinal studies and methodological inconsistencies. The review identifies future research priorities: longitudinal designs, cross-cultural studies, equity and accessibility, ethical considerations, teacher-AI interaction, diversification of genres and English varieties, learner individual differences, transfer to production and comparative studies across media. In conclusion, English television shows represent a valuable resource for understanding and teaching language in its social contexts, but they should complement rather than replace teachers, direct instruction and authentic interaction. This review provides a comprehensive framework for researchers and educators seeking to integrate televised language into applied linguistics research and language teaching practice.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to look into ways to support the good use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools while minimizing the potential harm they can cause to people and society. A sample of 153 people from various professional and public backgrounds participated in the study. A structured questionnaire was used to test a main hypothesis and three sub-hypotheses related to ethical guidelines, regulatory oversight, and educational awareness as ways to reduce AI-related risks using a quantitative methodology. Participants were unanimous in their belief that ethical frameworks, clear legal regulations, and increased education and training are necessary for the responsible integration of AI technologies, according to the findings. More specifically, more than 84% of respondents agreed that education and awareness play a crucial role in ensuring AI safety, while approximately 77% emphasized the significance of regulatory oversight. The main hypothesis, which is that AI harms can be significantly reduced by combining ethics, law, and education, is supported by these outcomes. The study recommends expanding educational programs, establishing enforceable regulatory frameworks, and adopting comprehensive ethical standards to improve public and professional understanding of AI. To promote public confidence in AI systems and strike a balance between innovation and safety, such an integrated approach is essential.

Abstract

Greek pottery is among the oldest arts and crafts known to humankind, initially linked to daily and functional needs, and later becoming enduring, imbued with aesthetic and symbolic values. Greek pottery was distinguished by its diverse styles and renowned techniques that emerged throughout different eras. Artists excelled in shaping the clay, employing firing and coloring techniques to produce high-quality pottery pieces. The graphic designs and patterns on pottery vessels reflected various aspects of Greek life, including economic, commercial, social, and political ideas. Initially simple designs based on clustered elements, they later incorporated human and animal motifs with symbolic and functional significance. This has contributed to the study of conflict patterns in the decorative designs of Greek pottery, revealing the details and artistic techniques used by Greek artists in producing these works, and their role in uncovering aspects of ancient civilization.

Abstract

Vegetation coverage is significantly influenced by rainfall. The analyses of vegetation influenced by meteorological factors contribute to research on the relationships between terrestrial ecosystems and climate changes. This study employs GIS and satellite image processing techniques to examine the relationship between the Normalized Difference of Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) as well as their relationship with rainfall in Diyala, using multi-temporal Teraa MODIS and TRMM satellite from 2001 to 2019. The results of spatial and temporal distribution show that the value of three indicators varies from year to year, also change from place to another in the Diyala governorate. The rainfall shows there is a match in behavior between the curve of rainfall with the curve of NDVI and the curve of the EVI index. The southwest and northeastern areas are characterized by high values of rainfall, NDVI and EVI. Finally, the regression technique is used to obtain the correlation between rainfall with NDVI EVI. It is concluded that the correlation between rainfall, NDVI and EVI regression coefficient is a good positive correlation.

Abstract

The present study provided a linguistic review of published research on sign language from 2011 to 2026. It examines studies across multiple linguistic domains including phonology, syntax, acquisition, lexicon, technology, and cognition. The review analyzes results from key studies on sign language acquisition, phonological organization, spatial pragmatics, syntactic agreement, sociolinguistic variation, and machine translation. The findings indicate that early age of acquisition significantly impacts sign language development. Community attitudes and the absence of bullying play essential role in acquisition. Language choices are also shaped by political and ideological boundaries. Phonologically, sign languages organized simultaneously through the use of parameters such as handshape, location, and movement. Syntactically, agreement is marked by directional verbs rather than affixes, and spatial references serve pragmatic functions beyond literal location. Technologically, there has been progress in sign language recognition, especially in fingerspelling and lexical signs, but true translation remains limited by the lack of large datasets and the need to move beyond glosses. The study concludes that sign languages share core linguistic features with spoken languages but implement them through modality-specific mechanisms.

Abstract

Healthcare organizations face increasing pressure to control costs, improve operational efficiency, and maintain the quality of healthcare services. Surgical procedures are particularly complex because they involve multiple resources, activities, medical personnel, equipment, and supporting services, making accurate cost management a significant challenge. This study aims to examine the role of applying Target Costing (TC) within the context of Medical Process Reengineering (MPR) in managing surgical costs and enhancing the competitive performance of hospitals. The study proposes an integrated approach in which target costing provides a forward-looking mechanism for determining and controlling the allowable cost of surgical services, while medical process reengineering focuses on redesigning healthcare processes, eliminating non-value-added activities, reducing waste, and improving resource utilization. The proposed approach links target costs with the activities and resources required to perform surgical procedures and subsequently examines their contribution to cost efficiency, service quality, and competitive performance. The study argues that integrating target costing with medical process reengineering can provide healthcare managers with more relevant cost information, support better resource allocation, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to enhancing hospitals’ competitive performance. The study therefore proposes an integrated framework linking target costing, medical process reengineering, surgical cost management, and competitive performance.
