Abstract

The iconographic analysis of the deities on the “height measurement” showed that the tala measurement of the Javanese statues are not so different from those of the Indian “tala measurement”, i.e. the uttama-dasa-tala. The similarity between the Javanese Siva Mahadeva’s iconometry and the Siva Mahadeva statues in India showed that the Siva Mahadeva statues in Java have the same role with the Indian Siva Mahadeva statues. Among the 43 general laksanas of Siva Mahadeva, the camara (fl ywisk) is the most important one (about 21,2644%). However, in India the camara is not always belonged to Siva Mahadeva, because we found some lower deities have the same laksana. This reality showed that the Indonesian silpin were not always followed strictly the Indian manual books. They created the statues a.o. the Siva Mahadeva statues according to local concept (the Kamanunggalan).

Abstract

Cantakaparwa Manuscripts (CP) written on palm-leaves are prose texts in old Javanese. These texts considered unique and interesting because they contain the famous story of Sutasoma and the language used in it is the combination of old and modern Javanese. These are the main reason why the grammatical aspects of CP texts become the focus of this research. This research, which is still in its early stage, chose verbs as the focus of the analysis. The reason is that verbs dominantly function as predicate, and predicate is the most important part of a sentence. There are two topics that will be focused on, i.e. (a) what are the forms of polymorpheme verbs in CP texts?, (b) what are the structure of sentences with verbal predicates in CP texts? The method used in this research is a synchronic language method, which is also known as a descriptive method. This method is considered in accordance with the objective of this research because it tries to fi nd out a language that exists at a certain time. The results of the research show that there are some combinations of old and modern Javanese grammatical aspects in CP texts. Most affi xes that function as verb formers in modern Javanese are the same as those in old Javanese. However, the forms that can only be found in modern Javanese began to appear. The sentence patterns with Predicate + Subject in old Javanese are usually marked by particles of emphasis, but they are rarely found in CP texts.

Abstract

The five Indonesian historical novels being the object of this research, reveal the western convention of the genre in a variety of forms and colours. Pramoedya’s and Mansur Samin’s use both “real” historical person as heroes and secondary character, while the others present imaginative characters as heros and historical persons as background. Pram’s Bumi Manusia, consisting of four books, shows the most complicated form and tends to be realistic in its narration. Arok Dedes, as complicated as the fi rst, is an ideological one. While Roro Mendut, in a very loose plot preoccupies with the psychological problem of the principal characters, and Subang Zamrud Nurhayati is erotic. The thinnest of the fi ve, Perlawanan Rakyat Sigi is heroic. About the writers: two of them are dead, the rest is above sixty years old. The interview shows that they love history and have received good education, especially in history stuff. They are preoccupied by the poor condition of the Indonesian people and the nation, and most of them supported actively the struggle of the oppressed.

Abstract

Children’s books about Indonesia published in the United States 1960-1980. The purpose of this study was to look at the image of Indonesia as presented in children’s literature published in the United States. The study focused upon the evaluative tone and the accuracy with which people in Indonesia are portrayed. Nineteen books (seven fi ctions, eight non-fi ctions, and four folktales) about Indonesia published between 1960 and 1980 constituted the sample of this study. In order to assess the quantitative portrayal of Indonesians in children’s books, the Evaluation Coeffi cient Analysis was used. A qualitative analysis was done using three evaluative criteria. The analysis of the data revealed that quantitatively, the books studied generally were positive in dealing with the image of Indonesians. Qualitatively, the fi ndings were interesting. Six books contained strong Western bias in measuring and depicting Indonesian people, and presenting the country in a negative tone as well. Stories and information about the picturesque and exotic predominated. Some otherwise fi ne books were spoiled by overgeneralization, stereotyping and inaccuracies in the text, illustration, and caption.

Abstract

The religion of Javanese society views that the universe as the wholeness which is balanced and harmonious, inseparable one from another, and always interconnected. The universe consists the macrocosm and microcosm. The macrocosm and the microcosm, are not always stable, but instable. The instability in the macrocosm, is the result of incident made on the surface of microcosm, or on the contrary. The regularity in the microcosm and macrocosm is coordinated, and if each cosm tries to achive unity and harmony, therefore life will be quiet and harmonious. The Javanese society always makes effort to guard harmony in the universe, if it is in chaos, they usually conduct rituals. The ritual of ruwatan is an effort in Javanese society to make the universe balance. Because of the incident affected by sukerta, therefore man has to be rid of the accident (to be eaten by Batara Kala). In the ruwatan ritual is usually performed presenting Murwakala or Sudamala scemes.

Abstract

Even today, there is disagreement among experts over how many languages and dialects there are in Indonesia. The methodological tools for classifying languages consist of mapping isoglosses, dialectometry, and measures of mutual intelligibility. The present article surveys the methodology used in N = 129 researches performed over the last 50 years and finds that researchers based their conclusions about languages and dialects predominantly on isoglosses while dialectometry and mutual intelligibility were much less used. It is also suggested that these three research methods be reevaluated in the light of the multilingual situation in Indonesia. We could possibly get better results with the isogloss method if we reconsidered the criteria for degree of sound similarity and the criteria for bundling isoglosses. For dialectometry, we should consider modifying the current percentages used to distinguish language-dialect divisions. For establishing mutual intelligibility, the factors that could be reassessed include techniques of testing, the procedures for choosing test-points and reference-points, and the criteria for choosing valid texts for testing.
