Abstract

The Wisdom of Language A Pragmatic Study on the Profile of the Post-New Order Era Mass Media Language. “Total Reformasi!” is the slogan circulated in the public discourse of the post-New Order era. All kinds of condemnation, grievances, and anger have been raised in various discourses, from formal to informal dialogues. In such an era, people’s collective memory is mostly associated with uncontrollable events, and it is eventually represented in the discourse of “the overdosed Reformasi” (Reformasi yang kebablasan). A word, phrase, and sentence basically have the potential of expressing both referential and contextual meanings. From a pragmatic point of view, a word, phrase, or sentence has a capacity to express either wise or unwise intentions. “Unwise intention” in the context of this research is defined as an act of transgressing or violating the ethics and etiquettes of a society. How can the discourse of Reformasi be constructed wisely? Is it necessary to appropriate unwise vocabulary in public discourses? Who holds the responsibility for fostering public wisdom? The wisdom of language has nothing to do whatsoever with manipulative acts in information dissemination. The wisdom of language relates to strategies of choosing certain linguistic features. Wisdom is a collective responsibility. A wise language would not be able to fully exist unless all of the related parties and resulting events make a concerted effort towards wisdom. Wisdom does not involve itself in the tug of war between the right and freedom of participating in discursive formations.

Abstract

Cantakaparwa Manuscripts (CP) written on palm-leaves are prose texts in old Javanese. These texts considered unique and interesting because they contain the famous story of Sutasoma and the language used in it is the combination of old and modern Javanese. These are the main reason why the grammatical aspects of CP texts become the focus of this research. This research, which is still in its early stage, chose verbs as the focus of the analysis. The reason is that verbs dominantly function as predicate, and predicate is the most important part of a sentence. There are two topics that will be focused on, i.e. (a) what are the forms of polymorpheme verbs in CP texts?, (b) what are the structure of sentences with verbal predicates in CP texts? The method used in this research is a synchronic language method, which is also known as a descriptive method. This method is considered in accordance with the objective of this research because it tries to fi nd out a language that exists at a certain time. The results of the research show that there are some combinations of old and modern Javanese grammatical aspects in CP texts. Most affi xes that function as verb formers in modern Javanese are the same as those in old Javanese. However, the forms that can only be found in modern Javanese began to appear. The sentence patterns with Predicate + Subject in old Javanese are usually marked by particles of emphasis, but they are rarely found in CP texts.

Abstract

Old Javanese is known as a language that has a predicate clause pattern (V) preceding the subject (S). Usually, there is a particle ta or its variation between the predicate-subject sequences (V-ta-S). Besides the V-S pattern, the S-V pattern is also found. In this paper, it is shown that the clause pattern in Old Javanese is triggered by the importance of forming a narrative discourse. Particle ta and several other syntactic elements have a role in shaping narrative discourse. Other syntactic elements are the definition of nouns, arguments in the form of nouns (NP) or pronouns, and affective-passive verbs. The source of the data I use for this study is the Old Javanese parwa text, namely Adiparwa edited by Juynboll (1906). According to Molen (2010, 396), parwa is a literary product in itself. Parwa must be viewed as a literary work, just like kakawin. There is a clear story structure aided by lexical, grammatical, and literary structuring tools. In this study, the grammatical elements used for the purpose of building the story are shown.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of high school EFL students regarding isolated and integrated approaches to grammar teaching in Depok, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research investigates how students view and evaluate the effectiveness of these approaches in grammar instruction. Data was collected through questionnaires completed by 113 students. The results show a strong preference for the integrated approach, with 98.3% of students favoring grammar instruction during communicative activities. Although there were some inconsistencies in student preferences, students recognized the benefits of integrating grammar with communicative tasks. However, challenges such as students' tendency to forget grammar rules and difficulties in implementation were noted. This study emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach, combining integrated grammar instruction with structured practice to optimize learning outcomes.

Abstract

Evidence from literary texts originating from the Mount Merapi-Merbabu milieu in Central Java demonstrates the existence of a variant of the passive marker -in- affix, which has been in use since the early period of Old Javanese: the passive prefix ing-. The six literary texts that serve as the sources for this study indicate that the ing- prefix began to emerge during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, coinciding with the development of Middle Javanese. Previous researchers have not paid much attention to the ing- prefix, as it was considered merely incidental, especially since ing- was also found in texts from periods before the fifteenth century. Alongside the emergence of ing-, another form ring- appears, which serves the same grammatical function. This article focuses on two key issues: (i) ing- as a passive marker and (ii) passive construction patterns. The findings of this study reveal both similarities and differences in the grammatical characteristics of Javanese as used in texts from Merapi-Merbabu, compared to Old Javanese and Modern Javanese. The similarity between Middle Javanese and Old Javanese lies in passive constructions where the agent is expressed through suffixes for second- and third-person pronouns. Meanwhile, Middle Javanese and Modern Javanese share a similarity in passive constructions where the agent appears as a prefix for first- and second-person pronouns. The resemblance of Middle Javanese’s passive constructions to both Old Javanese and Modern Javanese within literary texts from the Merapi-Merbabu milieu suggests that this region preserves a transitional form of the language between Old Javanese and Modern Javanese.
