Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether, in a case study of Indonesia, financial derivatives are used as a means of tax avoidance as literature shows that derivative users incline to avoid tax. Two samples treatment are conducted in examining the problem. Initially, using the sample all derivative users, this study does not find that derivative users are significantly related to tax avoidance. However, when the sample is separated into two groups based on the level of disclosure on financial derivatives, the results show otherwise. Firms with low level of disclosure on financial derivatives is more tax aggressive compared to those with high level of disclosure. These findings are shown by their lower ETRs (Effective Tax Rate) compared to other firms. Moreover, this study also examines the relationship between the use of financial derivatives with the level of tax avoidance. The results indicate that the use of financial derivatives is positively related to the level of tax avoidance. Results of this study are expected to have positive contribution on the development of tax policy in Indonesia, particularly for the tax on derivatives.

Abstract

This study investigates whether the convergence of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) increase the value relevance of accounting information of firms listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange. This study covers periods pre-IFRS convergence and post-IFRS convergence during 2006-2011. We tested the value relevance of book value of equity and earnings in pre- and post- IFRS convergence. We find that on the beginning stage of IFRS convergence, earnings become more value-relevant whereas the book value of equity does not. Meanwhile, on the advance stage of IFRS convergence, we find book value of equity and earnings are more value-relevant. Besides that, this study also provides sensitivity analysis which revealed empirical result from a modification of model.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of accrual or real earnings management on the possibility of companies involved in tax shelter activities by using Surat Ketetapan Pajak Kurang Bayar (notice of tax deficiency) as a proxy to measure the tax shelter. By using a sample of companies who received Surat Ketetapan Pajak Kurang Bayar (notice of tax deficiency) in manufacturing industry and listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period 2001-2010, this study finds that the company tends to favor accrual earnings management for decreasing possibility of aggressive tax shelter activities. This finding is not supporting the hyphotesis. Real earnings management via abnormal operating cash flows and abnormal discretionary production increasing possibility of aggressive tax shelter activities. Both findings are supporting the hypothesis. This study also finds that both practices of accrual earnings management or real earnings management have substitute effect in explaining the possibility of companies involved in tax shelter activities.

Design of performance measurement system is investigated financial and non-financial measures related to the four perspectives of Balanced Scorecard (BSC). This paper examines whether a role conflict and procedural fairness affect the relationship between performance measure and managerial performance. Based on a sample of 67 managers of regional Bank in Pekanbaru, the results from a structural model tested using Partial Least Squares indicate a relationship between performance measurement system and managerial performance is mediated by a role of conflict. However, this study not supported that procedural fairness mediated relationship between performance measurement system and managerial performance. These results may have important theoretical and practical implications.
