Abstract

This article explores spectatorship as a phenomenon within communication, branding, and media/cultural studies through a participant ethnographic approach applied to communal viewing (nobar) activities. Departing from the premise that watching is not merely a passive act of reception, this study integrates three conceptual frameworks (audience desire and pleasure, memory spectacles, and the unconscious dream) to understand how spectators merge with and engage affectively with media texts and narratives. Through participant observation during communal viewing moments, the researcher examines viewers' behaviors, feelings, and thoughts as they encounter specific media content, capturing engagement dynamics that are simultaneously cognitive, emotional, and unconscious. A psychoanalytic lens is employed to read how viewing reflects viewers' latent desires and personal fantasies. At the same time, the concept of memory spectacles traces how the viewing experience triggers the resurfacing of personal and collective memories that are performed and displayed within the social interactions of communal viewing. Viewing pleasure is understood as arising from the release of desire that occurs when the boundary between the viewer's self and the media text dissolves, producing an immersive experience that transcends mere information consumption. This ethnographic approach is considered particularly suited to delving into the attitudes and experiences of audiences, consumers, participants, and publics toward viewing materials with specific content and narratives, including how such engagement carries over into and persists within their everyday lives. This article contributes to communication and branding studies by offering an analytical model that integrates the affective, psychological, and sociocultural dimensions of spectatorship, while affirming the importance of participant ethnography as an instrument for uncovering layers of meaning that surveys or textual analysis alone cannot capture. Its implications are relevant for media practitioners, brand marketers, and popular culture researchers seeking to understand audiences' emotional attachment to what they watch.

Abstract

Women are the main object in the institution of marriage. For the wedding industry, narratives about women are commodified into a product that has a high exchange value in this industry. This article discusses how the wedding industry uses the media to represent women and play a role in spreading the pleasure that is considered "most" for women, namely marriage. The wedding industry propagates the image of glorifying the ideal bride. Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis model is for interpreting messages conveyed by wedding industry professionals through social media. Data was collected from professional Instagram narratives related to the wedding industry. The findings show how the constructs are built to determine the position of the subject-object and readers regarding the wedding industry. The constructed image of the ideal marriage occupies the subject position. It defines women in the object position to achieve feminine marriage ideals in the name of self-empowerment by celebrating various choices. The reader's position is marked by perceiving the marriage experience from the representation of women presented by the media. In the end, these positions give the highest social status to married women and provide the legitimacy that women need to marry but still feel like active agents in their lives. This hegemony ultimately strengthens the progress of the marriage industry.

Abstract

This study analyzes the MS Glow for Men advertisement in a YouTube video presenting Marshel Widianto and Babe Cabita, using an instrumental approach of the Branded Content Analysis (BCA) method. The advertisement promotes a different representation of masculinity, featuring men with positive personalities and standard bodies, contrasting with the standard image of athletic men in male grooming product advertisements. This approach highlights how influencers influence audiences through various textual, technical, and kinesthetic modes. The research results indicate that the advertisement successfully alters the audience's perception of masculinity, illustrating that masculinity is not only related to physical attributes but also to personality and character. The positive response from the social media audience signifies the advertisement's success in representing diverse concepts of masculinity. This study contributes theoretically by demonstrating the effectiveness of the instrumental approach in analyzing representations of masculinity. Practically, advertisements of this nature provide opportunities to promote a more inclusive and diverse concept of masculinity in the marketing domain.
