Abstract

The development of the creative industry and the unstable dynamics of the work world have led to the emergence of the job hugging phenomenon among Gen Z creative workers, namely the condition of persisting in work despite experiencing pressure and dissatisfaction. The urgency of this research is to understand the role of private digital communication spaces (Close Friends) in interpreting social support and maintaining emotional well-being, considering that studies related to the subjective experiences of Gen Z are still limited. This study aims to explore past motives (because motive) and hopes to be achieved (in-order-to motive) rooted in previous experiences such as social pressure, the need for privacy, and uncomfortable digital interaction experiences, while also directed at the desire to obtain a sense of security, emotional support, and control in expressing themselves in digital spaces. The study used a qualitative method with an Alfred Schutz phenomenological approach. Data were obtained from in-depth interviews and observations of 5 Gen Z creative workers in Bandung City aged 21-23 years who experienced job hugging. The results show that Close Friends is used as a private space for self-expression, sharing personal experiences, and obtaining emotional support. The use of this feature is influenced by negative experiences in public spaces and the aim of creating safer and more supportive communication. This research suggests further development by expanding the subject matter, context, platforms, and the use of other methods to enrich the study. Limitations of the study lie in the limited number of informants and its focus on a single platform, Instagram.
