Abstract

This study is a qualitative study about linguistic repertoire and the subjects are three people from three different ages of a Ngaju Dayaknese family consisting of the mother, the first child and the third child. This study was conducted in order to see the linguistic repertoire of them. In order to reach the research objectives, I used the theories of linguistic repertoire by Milroy and Milroy (1990) and code choice by Holmes (2001). From my study, I found that the linguistic repertoire of the third child is Banjarese language, Indonesian language, and Ngaju Dayaknese language, the linguistic repertoire of the first child is Ngaju Dayaknese language, Indonesian language, and Banjarese language, and the linguistic repertoire of the mother is Ngaju Dayaknese language, Banjarese language, and Indonesian language. It can be concluded that the linguistic repertoire of each subject can be distinguished one from another and it was influenced by the environment he/she was exposed to.

Abstract

The writers observed the initiating acts used by the host of Talk Indonesia in political issues and cultural issues and the comparison of initiating acts between those two issues. The data was taken from several episodes of the Talk Indonesia that have topics on political and cultural issues.  In the findings, the writers found that the highest percentage of initiating acts types in political issues is Inform (37%), and the lowest percentage is Action Request (1%), whereas, the highest percentage of initiating acts types in cultural issues is Inform (39%) and the lowest percentages are Polarity Questions (1%) and Action Requests (1%). The writer also found that in general, the percentage of Statement in the political issues (54%) is lower than those in the cultural issues (73%) while the percentage of Questions in the political issues (41%) is higher than those in the cultural issues (26%). The conclusion drew that different issues trigger different initiating acts

Abstract

This article deals with the main female character, Angel’s, redemption in the Christian Romance novel, Redeeming Love. This article will discuss Angel’s perception of her body before her marriage and how that perception changes after her marriage to Michael. To analyze Angel’s concept of her body, I will use biblical verses in the books of Genesis, Corinthian, John, and Luke. I find that Angel regards her body as an empty vessel before her marriage to Michael. By finding Angel’s perspective of her body before her marriage, I found that Angel uses her body and soul separation as a strategy to deal with her pain. Once she is married, Angel regards her body as the temple of God and uses her knowledge of her body as the temple of God to help others like her receive God. At last, I can conclude that the Christian romance genre can be used as tool to spread the Christian perspective about the body.

Abstract

This paper emphasizes guilt as the main issue portrayed in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner through its main character, Amir. Guilt discussed in this paper is defined as a feeling produced from a behavior that is related to a failure, a wrong doing, or even a sin. This paper discusses the way Amir deals with his guilt since it needs to be redeemed even through suffering. In this paper, I maintain that Amir bears not only his personal guilt yet also his familial and societal guilt. Amir’s personal guilt comes from his failure to become a good friend, his familial guilt comes from his burden to bear the sin of the family, especially his father, and his societal guilt comes from his burden to bear the injustice that happened in the history of his tribe. The analysis also shows that self-sacrifice is the way Amir chooses to deal with his guilt.

Abstract

This study deals with errors which include tenses (verb forms), number agreement, and active-passive voice, word order, and word formation on students’ essays.The purpose of this study is to find out the types of errors committed by the students in Written 4 class based on five categories which are addition, omission, misformation, misordering  and blends. The writer found that the most frequent error is misformation, especially the misformation of verbs and nouns. In conclusion, the students committed misformation, misordering, addition, omission, and blends errors; and misformation is the most commonly committed error which is found in their essays.
