Abstract

Sahabat Christian School Batam was established in 2011. This school provides 2 programs which are Kindergarten program and Elementary programs. Sahabat Christian School Batam also has 2 competitors, which are Holy Vision School (Visi Kudus) and Eben Haezer school. They were considered as competitors because of the price, location, and service. The main problem of Sahabat Christian School is low brand awareness. In other words there are only a few people who know about the existence of this school and some people know about this school but they do not really know what services that this school offers. In order to solve this problem, Sahabat Christian School needs a tool which can highlight their Uniques Selling Point to give credible and trustworthy information about this school. This tool is a website. As the main purpose is to increase brand awareness, a website will be the best solution since a website can help to highlight the Uniqueness and provides school’s information in detail and trustworthy. There are 3 highlighted USP’s: Christian Academic, Christian values, and non-academic. By highlighting their USP could increase the school brand awareness and persuade them to use the school’s services.Keyword: Promotional Tool, Brand Awareness, Unique Selling Point, Website

Abstract

The popularity of Avatar: The Last Airbender intrigues me to analyze Aang’s journey, as the main character, in becoming a hero. I aim to analyze the stressors that cause Aang’s psychological distress, his coping mechanisms, and how he develops into a hero. To find out about the three aforementioned points, I use theories on psychological distress and coping mechanisms. My analysis demonstrates that Aang’s psychological distress is caused by three stressors: his fear of accepting his new identity and responsibility, his shame, and his fear of the war and failure. To deal with those stressors, Aang adopts two coping mechanisms: emotion-focused (avoidance, seeking social support for emotional purposes, and acceptance), and problem-focused (seeking social support for instrumental purposes, planning, and problem-solving). By the end of the series, Aang has become a hero by developing into a selfless and benevolent humanitarian who used his intelligence and integrity to win the war. Keywords: psychological distress, stressors, coping mechanism, hero

Abstract

This paper discusses the process of making children’s picture book with low fantasy as the genre which explore racist bullying among children. The creative work emphasizes on the victims more than the bullies, thus, three stories implement Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping to show how children can cope with the stress of being racially bullied. The main characters in the three stories use problem focused coping, especially planful problem solving to stop the racist bullies from bullying them. The other two stories use Developmental Intergroup Theory to show how children learn prejudices toward other races by learning from the adults around them. The main characters in the last two stories are influenced by the adults around them in developing prejudices against others of different races and bullying them. Keywords: Racist Bullying, Coping Strategy, Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, Developmental Intergroup Theory, Children’s Picture Books, Low Fantasy.

Abstract

This creative work is in five children’s picture book format for the target of age five to nine and the topic focuses on children’s anxiety. My stories will be in low fantasy genre, where the anxiety in each story has various forms. The main theme of my stories is to show that what anxiety produces negative thoughts that are not based on reality. To show how children can have anxiety, I use Cognitive Distortions theory, and to show how children can cope with their anxieties, I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) theory. Each of my stories will be about how anxiety happens to the main character and how the main character solves the problem. From the research I did, I found that anxiety happens to children and it produces negative thoughts that are later proven to be untrue. With CBT, children can also learn how to cope their anxieties by self-monitoring their own emotions and turn negative thoughts into positive ones. Keywords: Children, anxiety, cognitive distortions, cognitive behavioural therapy

Abstract

This study exploring three BL Webtoons is for taking a closer look on how the characteristics of heterosexuality can be found in BL Webtoons. To achieve that purpose, the theories used cover the set formula of male and female illustrations and gender roles. The first analysis is about the physical appearance by going into details of the physical build, facial features, and biology of the masculine and feminine males. The second one is the actions to see the feminine and masculine characters’ different ways of acting and thinking. The result of the analysis reveals how feminine males in these three BL Webtoons are depicted the same way as females are. The fact that gender identity and gender roles that describe heterosexuality are present,  shows that these three BL Webtoons  are narrated in the framework of heterosexuality. So, heteronormativity, the view that heterosexuality is the default, succeeds in infiltrating BL Webtoons. Keywords: BL Webtoon, heteronormativity, gender roles, homosexuality

Abstract

In this article, I want to analyze a movie entitled Fight Club by David Fincher. It is one of Film Noir movies that is adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. Film Noir usually employs mentally unstable characters. In this movie, Jack, the main character, has psychological problems which causes his anxieties. Thus, I want to find out the types of Jack’s anxiety and the defense mechanism he uses to cope with it. I will identify the types of Jack’s anxieties and the defense mechanisms he uses. His anxieties have led him to have insomnia, depression, and the formation of his alter ego Tyler Durden. They also cause his problematic behavior that results in the destruction of his life. In order to cope with his psychological problem, Jack uses several defense mechanisms. In my analysis, I use theory of anxieties and defense mechanisms by Sigmund Freud. Based on the analysis, I find that Jack has reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. To cope with anxieties, he uses defense mechanisms such as repression, fixation, and regression. His anxieties and unhealthy defense mechanisms are what have driven him to have problematic behavior.  Keywords: anxiety, defense mechanism, neurotic anxiety, reality anxiety, moral anxiety

Abstract

Humanity has their own meanings of life. Those meanings are meant to guide them towards fulfillment. People have different triggers that propel them to find their meanings of life, for example death anxiety. This novel project follows Trista, the bearer of a Curse which has the power to kill her if she uses it. As a result, she fears death and struggles to find her meaning of life, because she feels sorrow caused by her death anxiety. To better explore the issue, I apply Paul Wong’s Meaning Management Theory about meaning of life and death anxiety in the story. I find that death anxiety makes someone like Trista experience a life-changing experience to motivate her to find meaning, and the death anxiety subsides when a person finds meaning, accepts, and no longer fears death. A person who finds meaning will live life to the fullest based on their meanings. Keywords: Meaning of life, death anxiety, death acceptance

Abstract

Gadis is the oldest girl’s magazine in Indonesia. In 2020, Gadis published its annual edition with its trademark theme that is Fashion and Beauty. As part of the media, Gadis must select certain pictures to be published in the magazine, thus the pictures are the ideal portrayal of girls. I used Semiotics theory by Roland Barthes to know the girls’ ideal image and how Gadis constructed it. I found out that confidence, friendliness, and playfulness are three ideal images in the fashion rubric of Gadis 2020 Annual Edition. The finding of my analysis is that: girls’ ideal image that Gadis represents is influenced by the characteristics of generation Z who are the target market of Gadis, as well as Indonesian culture that is being friendly. Keywords: Girls’ magazine, Gadis magazine, Ideal Image, Semiotics

Abstract

This study deals with the adaptation of an Indonesian novel entitled Imperfect (2019) by Meira Anastasia into a film with a similar title Imperfect (2019) by Ernest Prakarsa. Although there are differences between the novel and the film adaptation, they have similarities in terms of the main issue of women’s physical insecurities and their struggle for self-acceptance. Considering that aspect, this study aims to argue the persistent existence of patriarchal domination despite the differences in the storyline and characterization. The adaptation also bears similarities that indicate the issue of women's insecurities and struggle for acceptance. In this study, the theory of adaptation and patriarchal beauty standards are used as a tool to analyze the film adaptation. despite the adapters’ aim to raise the issue of women's physical insecurities and criticize the patriarchy’s standard of beauty, the film adaptation even indicates the persistence of patriarchal domination. Keyword: beauty standard, film adaptation, patriarchy, self-acceptance, women insecurities
