Abstract

The results of Brexit referendum have led to a differentiation in terms of decisions and responds between leaders in the European Union about the future of this regional organization. As a result, the European Union was divided into two groups which is “more Europe” and “less Europe” as it hinders in reaching consensus regarding the formulations of a policy in the European Union. This research uses the theory of Interdependence and common security to analyze European Union’s responds to Brexit and COVID-19 where the compilation of the analysis’ results was carried out using qualitative methods and an explanatory approach. In fact, the COVID-19 Pandemic brought a negative impact in many fields that can destabilize not only member countries, but also regional security in Europe. The results of this research indicate that the European Union, which was heading towards disintegration due to Brexit, was able to set aside fragmented national interests by increasing interdependence to achieve common security in the European Union due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This interdependence is proven by holding meetings and a common viewpoint on the threat of Covid-19, so that policy formulation can be carried out comprehensively and responsively.

Abstract

Global trade transformation and technological advancement drive business sector into another level we have never imagined and alter people’s daily lifestyle. However, with the occurrence of global pandemic, the world is forced to make a few steps backwards as the economy in most countries see a downturn. Surprisingly, e-commerce set a new adoption of business pattern and lifestyle, and even pushes consumerism to leap forward as people comply with stay-at-home measures. COVID-19 crisis has indeed caused a structural shift towards digital commerce, but the cultural impact is just as powerful. This study would like to delineate particular cases of e-commerce and retail development in Indonesia through mapping consumers’ purchasing pattern as well as current challenges for both people and businesses. The findings suggest that culture can affect business in terms of segments, choices based on latest trends and common belief. In Indonesian case, segmentation is shifting from travel to home-based activities and interest. Yet, preferences on specific trends and lifestyle remain unchanged, for example, younger generation inclination to products of Korean popular culture and products with halal certification. This pinpoints that consumer behaviour and cultural background have to be seriously taken into account for businesses to develop. Albeit it is crucial for business players to turn their attention to this, government has to be able to encourage the growth of the overall landscape by providing an ease into business environment through physical and digital infrastructure assistance in order to create competitive and inclusive milieu in this digital economy era. Keyword(s): e-commerce, business, culture, purchasing pattern, COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe relation between postcolonial theory and developmentalism does not run linearly, but there is a contradictory dialogue space. This article aims to explain the rejection of postcolonial theory to the paradigm and practice of developmentalism through an evaluation of debates in the philosophical realm. This article answers the debates in postcolonial studies, including the theorizing of political economy, development, and international politics. This rejection stems from the fact that developmentalism is considered a new form of colonization in the economic aspect, extending to social, political, and cultural aspects. The results show that the opposition of postcolonial theory to developmentalism can be explained through four discussions as the unit of analysis, which consists of the international trade system, capital distribution schemes, the role of global institutions, and the existence of the state and its people.ABSTRAKRelasi di antara teori poskolonial dan developmentalisme tidak berjalan secara linear, melainkan terdapat ruang dialog di dalamnya yang saling bertentangan.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought people to stay longer to disconnected from the face-to-face world than before and rely on the cyber domain daily. Because of the pandemic, Southeast Asia countries added a new 40 million internet users and in total 400 million internet users in the region. The new environment of interaction in the virtual domain generates the bipolarity of dominant power between the U.S and China to establish how cyberspace needs to regulate. The increasing penetration of internet users in the region creates an opportunity for ASEAN to establish ASEAN digital master plan that aims to accelerate region recovery from the pandemic through cyber cooperation. Abstract

This paper examines the implementation of the ASEAN Vision 2020 in cooperation on food security. The ASEAN Vision 2020 stated that ASEAN will strengthen their cooperation to enhance food security and international competitiveness of food, agricultural and forest products, to make ASEAN a leading producer of these products, and promote the forestry sector as a model in forest management, conservation and sustainable development. ASEAN had built a well-established framework of cooperation on food security. The establishment of the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) was praised as an ASEAN achievement in enhancing the cooperation in food security. Although, compared to the objectives of regional economic cooperation and military security mechanism, the objective in strengthening the cooperation on food security remains less significant within the ASEAN's discussions. The question is then, by conducting numerous frameworks of cooperation, did ASEAN excel to achieve the objectives in ASEAN Vision 2020 in the sphere of food security? This paper argues that ASEAN had successfully delivered some positive achievements in the scope of regional cooperation in food security areas. However, to some extent, some ASEAN state-members are still struggling with problems related to food security, particularly regarding food accessibility. The ASEAN growing market brings about a challenge for food supply and greater pressure for the association to ensure environmental sustainability in the region. Regarding its goals within the scope of ASEAN Vision 2020, the association mostly focused on how to achieve their deeper economic integration. In the area of food security, ASEAN has managed to set up a foundation for further regional cooperation under the framework of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and ASEAN Vision 2040.
