Abstract

The conflict between South and North Sudan is worsened by racial differences. It has also destroyed public infrastructure, including healthcare. The healthcare system's collapse puts the Sudanese population at serious risk now and in the future. The purpose of this study is to reveal the text analysis dimension, the discourse practice dimension, and the sociocultural dimension in Sudan's famine news. A qualitative method is used as the foundational approach, with a critical paradigm as the research perspective. The approach used is Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to uncover the relationships between language, power, and ideology in the discourse on the Sudan crisis. Data is collected from news articles discussing the Sudan crisis from multiple media, using manual recording tools and translation software to understand multilingual texts. The findings indicate that the choice of sentence structure reflects tense social relations within this conflict situation. The discourse created by the Sudanese government seeks to maintain legitimacy by diverting attention from internal issues like famine to external threats. Furthermore, the sociocultural dimension highlights the inability of international diplomacy to resolve the conflict, creating an impression of deadlock and underscoring the role of the international community in responding to Sudan's complex and historical crisis. Recommendations for future research include conducting field studies that involve perspectives from various groups and performing long-term analyses on the development of the Sudan crisis to understand the impact of government discourse within the context of dynamic socio-political change.

Abstract

The ongoing debate in English Language Teaching (ELT) emphasizes the need for innovative approaches to enhance language acquisition. This study explores the development and implementation of expression readers, a tool designed to improve learners' comprehension and expressive skills through logical analysis and defined descriptions. Logical analysis deconstructs sentences to reveal grammatical and syntactical relationships, while defined descriptions provide clear explanations of linguistic elements. Grounded in a theoretical framework that integrates cognitive engagement and critical thinking, this research examines how expression readers facilitate the structured learning of complex language concepts. The study employs a systematic approach, analysing how these methods enhance students' ability to understand and construct sophisticated sentences. Key findings indicate that expression readers promote deeper linguistic comprehension, improve sentence construction skills, and encourage analytical thinking. The practical implications of this research suggest that integrating expression readers into ELT curricula can enhance language proficiency. To maximize effectiveness, best practices include curriculum adaptation, teacher training, and the development of accessible educational materials. Addressing challenges such as resource availability and learner diversity is crucial to ensuring the successful implementation of this approach in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study analyze the psychological aspects of the secondary characters, namely the Red Queen and the White Queen in the film Alice through the Looking Glass (2016). This study focuses on how the differences of their Id, Ego, and Superego explains their behavior and how they strategize to resolve their conflicts. This study aims to explore the psychological aspects that shape character development and its relevance to narrative conflict resolution. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, using observation and recording techniques to collect data. Data sources include films and their transcripts from script.com written by Linda Woolverton. Data collection was carried out by watching and analyzing films, capturing important scenes, and interpreting character actions based on theoretical frameworks. The theory by Sigmund Freud (1923) was applied to categorize examples of Id, Ego, and Superego in each character, while the theory of conflict management model by Thomas and Kilmann (1970) used to analyze how the two sisters resolve their problems. The findings reveal that the Red Queen is dominantly driven by the Id, with 8 data reflecting impulsive and vengeful behavior rooted in unresolved childhood trauma. In contrast, the White Queen is governed by the Superego, with the 4 data displaying moral values ??such as wisdom and empathy. Their conflict is resolved through collaborative strategies, emphasizing a shared recognition of past mistakes that led them to become enemies. This study contributes to the understanding of psychological character development in film by demonstrating the interplay of internal psychological dynamics and their role in shaping narrative structure. It highlights how Freud’s framework and conflict resolution theory provide important insights into character motivations and how the resolution of these conflicts can provide a broader perspective on the significance of psychology in storytelling and film analysis.

Abstract

Public opinion columns in the Nigerian online newspapers often provide vital information on sociopolitical issues. Previous studies on political media discourse focused on how public opinions shape pre-election political debates and speeches in Nigeria. However, little attention was paid to how linguistic choices constrain public opinions, especially on Nigerian presidential election results. This study is designed to investigate the representation of public opinions on the Nigerian presidential election results in Nigerian online newspapers, with a view to determining the public opinion types and linguistic forms. This study adopts Norman Fairclough’s Dialectical-relational model to Critical Discourse Analysis, complemented by M. A. K. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar as the framework. These approaches provide a method for studying language use in the discourses of Nigerians on the Nigerian presidential election results. The descriptive design was adopted. Six popular Nigerian online newspapers (Vanguard, Punch, Nigerian Tribune, The Nation, Leadership, and The Guardian) published between February and April of the election years in 2011-2019 were purposively selected because of their robust contents  on Nigerian presidential election results, are critically examined and subjected to linguistic and qualitative method of analysis. Data are purposively selected from editorials, open letters, and comments based on election  and attitudes of people to the presidential election results in Nigeria. The analysis revealed the lexical modality is used by people to express their views  towards the  presidential election results in  Nigeria.

Abstract

The use of technologies in language learning can improve EFL students’ learning outcomes. One of them is HelloTalk application. It has great potential to be a useful language learning tool. This is reinforced by the results of another study which found that interacting directly with native speakers is essential for improving language skills. Therefore, this study investigates the effectiveness of the HelloTalk application in improving English-speaking skills among fifth-semester students at State Islamic University of Mataram. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through observations and semi-structured interviews to explore students' experiences and progress in vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation accuracy, and fluency development. The findings indicate that HelloTalk significantly enhances students' lexical range, as frequent exposure to real-time conversations expands their vocabulary. Moreover, students reported improvements in pronunciation, particularly in distinguishing challenging phonemes, due to instant feedback from native speakers. Additionally, fluency increased as students became more confident in engaging in spontaneous dialogue with fewer pauses. However, several challenges were identified, including the high cost of premium features, internet connectivity issues, and complex app functionalities that hindered some students, particularly beginners. Despite these limitations, HelloTalk proves to be an effective tool for technology-assisted language learning, supporting real-world conversational practice. The study suggests that integrating HelloTalk into formal language courses could maximize its benefits while addressing its limitations through institutional support.

Abstract

This study investigates vocabulary acquisition and the phenomenon of vocabulary spurt in a 24-month-old child, focusing on the interplay of cognitive abilities, memory, and understanding of word functions. The research aims to answer two primary questions: How do cognitive abilities and memory influence the vocabulary spurt in a 24-month-old child’s vocabulary acquisition? And to what extent does understanding word functions contribute to vocabulary development in a 24-month-old child? Utilizing a single-subject case study design, observational sessions were conducted over four weeks, capturing the child's verbal interactions and spontaneous speech in a supportive home environment. Data analysis combined quantitative measures of new word acquisition and qualitative assessments of contextual word usage. Findings revealed a significant vocabulary spurt, with the child averaging 3.5 new words per week, characterized by peaks in word acquisition and a predominance of nouns, followed by verbs and adjectives. The child effectively utilized words for requests, labeling, and expressing emotions, demonstrating a growing understanding of syntax. Cognitive milestones, such as object permanence and categorization, alongside social influences from parent-child interactions, were pivotal in vocabulary growth. The study underscores the importance of rich, interactive environments for language development, highlighting how consistent exposure to language through routines and social engagement fosters vocabulary acquisition. These insights contribute to developmental linguistics by elucidating the cognitive and social processes that underpin early language development, emphasizing the need for supportive language-rich contexts in early childhood education.

Abstract

Many students struggle with writing in English due to linguistic challenges such as morphology and syntax. This research aimed at discovering the morpho-syntactic errors that EFL students did and the most dominant error in the fifth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The researcher used descriptive quantitative method as the design of the research to analyze common morpho-syntactic error in on the students’ writings and to discover the errors and the most dominant errors made by students. The participants of this research were 145 students which chosen using simple random sampling where the researcher picked sample members from a population at random, without worrying about different groups or layers within that population. Data for this study were gathered through tests and the researcher analyzed using Dulay’s linguistic category taxonomy. The results of the study showed that errors are found at both morphological and syntactical levels. The morphological level included pronoun error, quantifier error, and inflectional error. Meanwhile, the syntactical level included tense error, infinitive error, auxiliary verb error and subject-verb agreement error. However, from all those errors, the most dominant error was pronoun error with the total number of errors was 504 in frequency. It implied that students lacked of understanding the use of pronouns in sentences. The research findings have important implications for both pedagogical approach and linguistic competence. For pedagogical approach, the insights help students understand and correct common grammar errors, improving their writing skills and boosting their confidence. In terms of linguistic competence, the findings highlight EFL students' development in morphology and syntax, enabling them to construct grammatically correct sentences and master complex language structures.

Abstract

The ceasefire proposal between Israel and Palestine shocked the world's residents because of the pros and cons of several related parties. Israel and Hamas as the target parties showed different responses to the proposal agreement presented by President Biden in his speech. So, this research is certainly considered interesting because it concerns the most important world phenomenon that has succeeded in shaking the global community. This research uses a qualitative method that aims to describe and analyze the discourse on this ceasefire proposal with the reactions of certain parties as stated in the Al-Arabiya news text based on Teun van Dijk's critical discourse analysis through the text dimension. The results showed the following data findings: 1) macrostructure (theme); 2) superstructure (scheme) includes summary (title and lead) and story (comment and situation); 3) microstructure four studies include semantic (background, detail, intent, presupposition, and nominalization), syntax (sentence form, coherence, and pronoun), stylistic (lexicon), and rhetoric (graphic, metaphor, and expression). The three structures have various elements with their characteristics to form the entire discourse content cohesively and relate to each other. Especially in the title and lead of the discourse, Al-Arabiya journalists have indirectly summarized the responses of those who accept or reject President Biden's statement after understanding the news content.

Abstract

A novel possess a high level of complexity, including their portrayal of social dynamics. The complexity of novels is evident in their narrative structures, the characterization of characters with psychological depth and diverse backgrounds, the dynamics presented within the story, and the messages conveyed by the author. Therefore, this study investigates the social dynamics reflected in the novel *Gadis Kretek* by Ratih Kumala, focusing on social change, gender equality, and family conflicts within Indonesian society in the 1930s. The novel provides an in-depth depiction of the development of the kretek industry in Indonesia, a sector that flourished rapidly after Dutch colonization, as well as the struggle of women to find space in a male-dominated business world. The character Jeng Yah, who plays a pivotal role in kretek production, symbolizes the struggles of women confronting social and cultural limitations to prove their capabilities. Using a qualitative approach that emphasizes analysis of characters, plot, and setting, this study uncovers the tension between traditional values and modernity, as well as how changes in the kretek industry reflect significant shifts in social class. The research also explores the impact of social changes on human interactions, particularly in the context of family relationships and individual struggles to preserve their values and identities. Overall, this study provides an in-depth understanding of how the novel reflects the social, economic, and cultural transformations occurring in Indonesian society, as well as its relevance to contemporary social issues that remain significant today.

Abstract

Pachinko (2022) is an American series produced and aired by Apple TV+ portraying generations of Zainichi trying to settle in Japan after their displacement from Japan-Occupied Korea that at the same time shows how American ideology as colonial contagion spread within the people. The act of mimicry displayed in the film’s narratology, production process, and additional intrinsic elements that differ from its novel version, Pachinko (2017), makes this series tend to become something ambivalent and lack a definite position—as if it gets recolonized after being free on its own. Other than that, dynamics during the Japanese occupation, whose practices are primarily inspired by the U.S., can be seen as setting the standard for ongoing life. By observing the series with film narratology including Verstraten’s (2009) mise en scene and focalization linked with theories surrounding the topic of postcolonialism, diaspora from forced migration, and the tendency to imitate or mimic, how the image of the U.S. wants to be built throughout the series can be identified. Moreover, focus on the theory of Bhabha’s (1994) mimicry will help to see how the production tries to make Zainichi seems to ‘put effort’ to be as similar as American. This series, as one of modern media platforms delivered into a private area, acts as the contagion transmitter with having the narrative form sick and infect the contagion within it towards the audience. With that, this research aims to analyze these forms of ‘contagion’ and the attempt at recolonization done by Americans which makes the contribution to the postcolonial discourse is to dissect this ‘new way’ of recolonization. Therefore, this research argues that forms of colonial contagion persist into the postcolonial era, perpetuated due to the obsession with gaining American recognition as a global center.
