Abstract

Diversity is naturally taken for granted, Allah the God creates the universe and enriches it by diversity itself. Human beings as part of the creation of Gods should be able to nurture the diversity. In reality, one cannot live without considering the plurality of things. For that reason, wisdom is needed to show mutual respect in the context of diversity and differences. The good example of maintaining the diversity is to learn theutterances as well as best practices undertaken by the predecessor and the founding fathers of this nation.Ihsan of Kediri East Java is one example of Sufi teacher who thougt such wisdom. Although he passed Islamic education by nonformal way, he has successfully written his monumental work, Irshad al-Ikhwan li Baya Shurb al-Qahwah wa al-Dukhan which discusses the legal aspect of coffee and cigarettes. The most important thing is not regarding with his ijtihad onwhether coffee and cigarettes are halal, haram, and makruh, but the implications of his ijtihad that urges Muslim to appreciate and respect to other different cultures. This is much more important to be implemented, because there are now many thoughts and movements that negating thedifference and diversity which arises at any time.

Abstract

This paper aims at studying and identifying the characteristic of ulama’s works from Purworejo, Central Java Province of Indonesia. Some ulama from Purworejo teach their students as well as their followers by publishing their idea based on religious texts. They try to response the problem of ummat from daily life perspectives. Those works consist of 56 titles at least that being written in Arabic language, Indonesian languange as well as Javanese language. The scope of works the have written are also varied ranging from discussing a certain doctrine to compiling some religious text for daily ritualpurposes. Through qualitative method, this paper shows that most of ulama articles from Purworejo targeting them for internal members although only a commercial publication company has published a few.

Abstract

It is widely known that identification of manuscripts on the attributes of Allah and His massanger (Rasul) particularly written in Sundanese Language work of Umm al-Barahim was not being well explored until the end of 20th century. I. Syarief Hidayat, a Padjajaran University professor, then carried out a dissertation research on this issue in 2007 and published it with the title Teologi dalam Naskah Sunda Islami (Theology in Sundanese Islamic Manuscript). In his book, Hidayat suggests that ahlus sunnah wal jama’ah (ASWAJA) as a moderate theology in Islam should be maintained and strengthened in Indonesia. His suggestion could be implemented by optimalizying Islamic ancient texts studies especially in the theme of tauhid or kalam in order to enlighten the urgent need for maintaining ASWAJA teology in current Islamic world.
