Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of cash holding, leverage and political connections (CSR) on earnings quality. In addition, the moderating role of corporate social responsibility in the relationship between the variables also examined. Data were collected from financial statements and sustainability reports of Indonesian manufacturing companies, listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Data were derived from the Indonesian stock exchange website and the company's official website. Using purposive sampling method, 424 firm-year observations between 2017 and 2020 were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis for panel data. The results of this study reveal that cash holding is negatively associated with earnings quality, while leverage is positively associated with earnings quality, and political connections are not associated with earnings quality. Furthermore, CSR does not have a role in weakening the negative effect of cash holding, leverage and political connections on earnings quality.

Abstract

This study examines audit committee quality and its relationship with financial reporting quality. The population of this study consists of the companies listed in Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) between years 2002 and 2012. Using Godden sample size formula, 133 companies are selected randomly for the study. It is found that in most of the equity based listed companies at BSE under study have complied with the legal formalities, for instance, appointment of independent directors, number of meetings, size of the audit committee, legal qualifications and financial qualifications of the directors, as they were required for the listing at a stock exchange in India. Further, the analysis and tests state that board size, audit committee meetings and its size have relationship with the financial reporting practices, but the CEO tenure and hold, board independence, net income, proportion of independent directors on board, legal qualifications and financial qualifications of the directors and overlap of audit committee members on compensation committee, have no influence on the financial reporting practices. Thus, it may be inferred that the companies may improve the financial reporting quality, by managing the board size, audit committee meetings and size, as these characteristics have significant relationship with financial reporting quality.

Abstract

This study examines the association between CEO duality, CEO ownership and financial footnotes readability. The data were collected from 1,469 non-financial firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) between 2010 and 2018. Using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, this study unveiled a negative and significant relationship between CEO duality and financial statement footnotes. In addition, the relationship between CEO ownership and financial statement footnotes is positive and significant. Furthermore, this indicates that CEO duality expands the embarrassment and provokes opportunistic behaviour from the CEO to prioritize personal interests by exploiting potential company resources to weaken the independence of the CEO. Hence, the readability of financial footnotes is undecipherable. On the other hand, CEO ownership is more responsible for improving corporate performance, so more financial statement footnotes are readable. Therefore, this study contributes to the literature on seeking the understanding of the readability of a firm's written communication in emerging countries.

Abstract

This study aims at examining the effect of green banking practice on bank performance with foreign and public ownerships as moderating variables. Data were collected from 14 Indonesian banking or 98 bank-year observations. The sample banks were participated in the green banking pilot project and listed in investasi hijau (or green investment) index between 2012 and 2018. Using the ordinary least square (OLS) model, this study demonstrates that green banking practices have a negative impact on bank profitability, but a positive impact on bank value. Meanwhile, public ownership strengthens the negative effect of green banking practice on profitability. Foreign ownership weakens the positive impact of green banking practice on bank value. Thus, stakeholders can use green banking practices as a consideration in making financial decisions as it has influence for bank performance.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence that educational background and accounting experience of CEOs have a relationship with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure. Data was gathered from all listed companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2020. 533 firms that published sustainability reports were selected as the sample for the research. The results indicate that CEOs with an educational background in accounting and work experience in accounting field, especially those who have worked at BIG4 accounting firms, have a significantly positive relationship with ESG disclosure. This means that CEOs who are well-versed in accounting are more sensitive to environmental issues and therefore, more likely to disclose more information about ESG. The findings suggest that CEOs with an accounting background are more environmentally conscious and can play a crucial role in expanding ESG disclosure.
