Abstract

A collaborative project involving two universities was initiated to support lecturers in Indonesia in designing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction adjusted to local needs and the latest advancements in EAP. Using a mixed-methods approach and developmental research design, the study included a needs analysis, implementation of an EAP professional learning program, and a program evaluation survey. Needs analysis was conducted through a survey with 88 lecturers and 618 students from 41 universities in Indonesia. The results of the need analysis were then used to inform the design and delivery of an online professional development program for EAP lecturers. Based on the needs analysis results, the EAP lecturers who participated in the survey conveyed that they required improvements in digital skills, teaching techniques for diverse proficiency levels, and methods for improving students productive skills and critical thinking abilities. The participating students also expressed their need for interactive EAP activities, team-based learning, and the use of social media for collaboration and connectivity. Informed by the needs analysis results, a two-month program was designed and delivered in eight 90-minute video conferences, combined with asynchronous activities on a learning platform. As revealed in the post-program survey, the participating lecturers feedback on the program highlighted contributing factors to the changes in their technological and pedagogical content knowledge, particularly in the areas of using digital tools and differentiated instruction in EAP. This study highlights the need for continuous professional development to enhance EAP lecturers ability to effectively apply acquired skills in teaching and professional practice.

Abstract

Students can improve their skills, broaden their knowledge, and practice their language using online language learning resources. These resources include several activities designed to meet students requirements, promote self-learning, and fit their learning preferences. This study investigates EFL teachers perceptions of students performance in online self-learning activities during laboratory classes. They reflect on how these activities can excite students interest, motivate them, and involve them. The research addresses two questions: (a) what teachers think about the importance of e-learning laboratory activities in language learning, and (b) how these activities can promote personalized and active learning. The researchers employed a survey, interviews, field notes, reflections, and class recordings to describe, examine, and interpret the data through narrative analysis. The results show encouraging trends in engagement, motivation, interest, time, independence, and future use. Most students had strong critical thinking skills and enjoyed the self-completion of the assignments. Few learners became demotivated and lost interest owing to the absence of grading, seriousness, or effective surroundings. Additionally, the research shows that compared to traditional face-to-face learning, online learning gives teachers more time and opportunities to update their methods and help students in new ways.

Abstract

This study investigated the significance of discussing a literary work written by an Indigenous American author to students general understanding of the socio-cultural, economic, and political issues of the Indigenous communities (ICs) in Indonesia. A total of 153 students who enrolled in the Prose Class at the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang participated in the study. This study adopted a pedagogical application model consisting of pre-reading activities, general comprehension, and connecting literary text with social context. The treatment was part of an attempt to incorporate local ICs content in the learning process and make it mainstream. This research employed a mixed method, and the participants completed the pre and post-tests as the quantitative data. In addition, an open-ended questionnaire and observation were used to collect the qualitative data. We employed Freires critical pedagogy to descriptively analyze the treatment process and results. The findings revealed that the treatment improved the students understanding of the issues faced by the ICs in Indonesia. They could comment critically on the issues during the discussion activity and fill in the knowledge gaps in the pre-test result. This study also suggested the integration and discussion of the ICs local values and issues into the education materials and texts to develop students critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Private tutoring has grown in prominence on a global scale. While research in this area has increased in recent decades, there remains a lack of focus on English private tutoring. This gap is particularly evident in Vietnam, where research on English private tutoring has not kept pace with its growing popularity. This article sheds light on the prevalence of English private tutoring among students in public high schools in Vietnam. The study examines the rate, patterns of enrolment, the reasons for its popularity and the perceived effectiveness of English private tutoring. Based on questionnaire data collected from 583 urban, regional, and rural school students, the findings revealed an enrolment rate of over 75%, with notable disparities in enrolment patterns among students in different socio-economic areas. However, despite the prevalence of private tutoring, the research findings revealed a modest impact of such tutoring on student academic performance, evidenced by over 75% of the students reporting slight improvement in their communicative skills. Irrespective of academic achievement levels and backgrounds, private tutoring has been a widespread and normalised educational practice, reflecting the nature of social and educational competition. The study emphasises the need for more proactive measures to regulate the practice before it is well-engrained as part of the culture.

Abstract

Indonesian EFL teachers English competency has been in the spotlight due to their unsatisfactory achievement. This reality has been observed during their practices in the classroom. This article aims at reporting the results of Indonesian EFL teachers perception of their productive English skills, speaking and writing. A mixed method was employed by focusing on introspective method. Quantitative data were obtained through a closed-ended questionnaire filled in by 206 secondary school teachers and analysed using SPSS software. Ten randomly selected teachers were interviewed to confirm the quantitative data. The findings show that EFL teachers speaking and writing skills are at a moderate level (68.62-71.70) and (67.83-71.18), respectively. Interview results indicate a low intensity of spoken English use in the classroom, which is less than 50%. This occurred for two main reasons: the students low ability to understand teachers talk/explanation and the teachers declining speaking ability. Meanwhile, only 2 of 10 teachers taught writing by following the steps of the writing process. However, at the interview session, the teachers rated themselves for speaking from 6-9 and for writing from 5-9. All teachers agreed that training to improve their English proficiency was highly important; this could be realised through the MGMP program. The results of these data will be used to develop a prototype of the Competency Test for Indonesian English Teachers (CTIET) to develop EFL teachers sustainable English proficiency.

Abstract

Translanguaging has recently emerged as a prominent field of study. Despite its growing popularity, its impact on students reading comprehension skills remains largely unexplored. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design to examine the impact of translanguaging on students reading comprehension performance. The study also examined students perceptions of translanguaging to gain a deeper understanding of translanguagings potential impact. Data were gathered through pre-and post-tests, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations. A sample of 56 Bhutanese school students (33 males, 23 females) were purposely recruited and divided into two groups: the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught using the translanguaging approach, while the control group followed a monolingual approach. The findings, based on the comparison of pre-and post-test scores between the two groups, revealed that the translanguaging group significantly outperformed the monolingual group in their post-test scores despite a negligible difference in pre-test scores. This suggests that translanguaging could be an effective teaching approach to enhancing students reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, despite the dominant position of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in the context, most students perceived translanguaging as an effective pedagogical practice. They reported that it allowed them to freely use their language repertoire to discuss and learn new vocabulary and difficult content, improved their confidence to participate in classroom discussions, and enhanced lesson comprehension. This study concludes with practical implications and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

This paper examines IMRAD, synthesis, and hedging within expert academic writing to encourage a world discussion platform and to enhance manuscript writing for internationally reputable journals. The research utilized 25 Quartile-1 Scopus-indexed articles from 25 scholarly journals from 2022 and 2023 publications across different subject areas. Through online searching, observation, and interpretive techniques, the patterns of IMRAD, its synthesis, and the use of hedging within the synthesis were analyzed and identified as crucial elements for creating a manuscript that serves as a world discussion platform. Based on the systematic observation and interpretation of the 25 data sources, the research findings were discussed across three aspects: the IMRAD pattern, synthesis, and hedging. The findings revealed that symmetrical IMRAD patterns were rarely employed by authors of Quartile-1 Scopus-indexed journals, with various patterns being applied and the largest proportion focusing on different aspects. Synthesis was utilized by all authors of the 25 journal articles, and hedging or cautious language was used by most authors. Authors worldwide may benefit from the results of this research when writing manuscripts to be submitted to internationally reputable journals. Additionally, academic writing teachers can use the proposed interpretive model and research results to teach expert academic writing to their students, thus enhancing the quality of student academic writing and enabling the publication of their papers in internationally reputable journals.

Abstract

Blended learning can facilitate ESP learning, yet challenges in AI-integrated ESP learning are largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the blended learning challenges of EFL undergraduate students from the perspective of student learning experience in an AI-integrated ESP course. The participants were 57 Thai mixed-level undergraduate students studying English for economics at a public university in Thailand. Using a mixed-method approach, student data were collected and analysed using Microsoft Teams learning analytics and triangulated with a questionnaire and focus group interview data. Study results showed similarities and differences in students blended learning challenges in the diverse target participants. Participants generally viewed technological and online learning aspects as the least challenging, in contrast with social aspects as the most challenging, followed by motivation and willingness to participate in the blended learning ESP course. Despite students academic achievement, data revealed students negative emotions and negative blended learning experiences amongst higher-proficiency students, but lower level of blended learning challenges due to easy learning tasks and lack of teacher support for more advanced language skills. In contrast, lower-proficiency students recorded more positive emotions and blended learning experiences but a higher level of blended learning challenges. Despite lower-level English, lower-proficiency students experienced teacher support both in using AI and ESP. The study highlights the importance of teacher support, which fulfils the incomplete roles of AI in ESP blended learning, and calls for a reconceptualisation of blended learning challenges. Implications for pedagogy and research on AI-integrated blended learning in ESP contexts are provided.

Abstract

Even though textbooks play an integral role in EFL teaching and learning processes, evaluation of English textbooks for vocational high schools in the Indonesian context and their relevancy to the targeted proficiency was still rare. This study identified text difficulty levels and English vocabulary profiles of a set of digital English coursebooks for vocational high schools in Indonesia. It also analyzed how text difficulty levels and vocabulary profiles correspond with the targeted proficiency level of vocational high school graduates. A corpus-informed and Lexile-based model was employed as the design of this research. Lexile framework was employed to measure text difficulty, while corpus information was utilized to determine the vocabulary profiles of the selected textbooks. Three tools were used to analyze the data quantitatively, namely Lexile Text Analyzer Professional, LancsBox, and English Vocabulary Profile in Text Inspector. This study found that the approximate text difficulty of reading passages in the coursebooks for grades 10 and 12 is slightly higher than the expected language proficiency level for vocational high school graduates. On the other hand, the approximate text difficulty of reading passages in the coursebook for grade 11 is slightly lower. However, in terms of vocabulary profiles, the three books emphasize the target vocabulary at the expected level (B1), as suggested by the Directorate of Vocational High School Development. In addition to those findings, it is important that teachers consider other factors outside the scope of this research, such as learners proficiency levels and interests or other qualitative data about the books, to determine whether the coursebooks are appropriate for their classes.

Abstract

English as a medium of instruction (EMI) is a growing global phenomenon, and non-native English-speaking (NNES) countries have increasingly adopted EMI courses in higher education over the past few decades in response to the momentum of globalization and internationalization. However, implementing EMI initiatives in Vietnam has faced numerous challenges and constraints. While there has been extensive research on the difficulties faced by content teachers in EMI classrooms, there is a lack of scholarly inquiry into the challenges students encounter in EMI programs in Vietnam. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the challenges faced by university students in EMI classrooms. The study used a mixed-methods research approach, gathering quantitative and qualitative data through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, respectively. The participants were 120 students enrolled in EMI programs at a public university in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The results revealed that students faced significant challenges in their EMI learning course. Precisely, they needed help comprehending course materials, understanding lectures, taking examinations, and participating in classroom discussions. Based on the results of the study, practical implications were discussed to enhance the effectiveness of EMI programs in higher education contexts.
