Abstract

This study examined the spatio-temporal analysis of urban crime pattern and its implication for Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria; it has the aim of using Geographical Information System to improve criminal justice system. The aim was achieved by establishing crime incident spots, types of crime committed, the time it occurred and factors responsible for prevailing crime. The methods for data collection involved Geoinformatics through the use of remote sensing and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for spatial data. Questionnaires were administered for other attribute information required. The analysis carried out in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment especially for mapping and the establishment of spatial patterns.  The results indicated that the main types of crime committed were theft and house breaking (42.9%), followed by assault (12.4%), mischief (11.3%), forgery (10.5%), car snatching (9.05%), armed robbery (8.5%), trespass (5.2%) and culpable homicide (0.2%). In terms of hot spots the districts recorded the following: Garki (27.62%), Maitama (25.7%), Utako (24.3%), Wuse (20.9%) and Asokoro district (1.4%) respectively with most of the crime committed during the day time. Many attributed the crimes to mainly high rate of unemployment and poverty (79.1%). Consequently to reduce the crime rate, the socio-economic situation of the city must be improved through properly constructed interventions scheme in areas known to quickly generate employment such as agriculture, small and medium scale enterprises, mining and tourism.

Abstract

A study of the water quality of the former tin mining lakes in Ipoh City was carried out to determine the Water Quality Index (WQI) and classification based on the Malaysia National Water Quality Standards, in order to determine its suitability to be developed as a water recreation area. Five former mining lakes were chosen: Gunung Lang, Taman Indah, Kg. Temiang, Lahat and Kg. Engku Husin. The parameters measured were pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and ammonical nitrogen (NH3N), while the heavy metals measured were lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and arsenic (As). The analytical study shows that four former mining lakes in this research are suitable to be developed for water recreation purposes as they are classified under class II with a WQI greater than 81, which holds a clean status. Only one lake, Kg. Engku Husin, is categorised as class III, which requires an intensive treatment before it can be used for recreational purposes. Meanwhile, heavy metals such as Zn, As and Cu were at the standard level except for Pb, which exceeded the set guidelines. The local authorities and project developers should take appropriate measures to ensure that this former mining lake is well maintained and managed so that it is preserved and suitable to be developed as a recreational area.

Abstract

Semarang has a high potential of landslides occurrences in its almost area that should be noted by the stakeholders. Consider this fact, human as the part of the system should be used as a center of the disaster management system to reduce the risk caused by the disaster. An adapted model of human factor toolkits is developed to represent a specific phase of human-centered disaster management. This model presents four phases including major disaster scenario, human error analysis, safety critical task and performance influence factors (PIFs). As the preliminary implementation, this study takes the pilot implementation of each phase of the model to examine the reliability of the concept in the landslide cases, especially in Semarang city. The result shows that there is quite a high deviation between expected and observed behavior of the community and the government institution regarding the awareness states of the system.

Abstract

The etiology of Low Birth Weight (LBW) in Murung Raya is still unclear. This study aimed to find out the relationship between environmental and health behavior risk factors of LBW in Murung Raya. 150 women were recruited through the incidence data 2013- 2014, and the questionnaires, medical records, and geographic data were measured by McNemar, ANOVA, logistic, IRR, MI, z (Gi), and NNI tests. Bivariate analysis showed significant correlation of LBW with TBA care OR= 10, drinking popa OR= 5, smoking OR= 6.1, and accessibility OR = 2.3, with adjusted OR for TBA care OR= 32.78, ANC OR= 27.52 revealing trend lines with ANOVA F=49, and clustering RR=7, MI >0 (four clusters), z (Gi) >1 (two high clusters), and NNI>1 (two high clusters). The spatial analysis provided greater statistical power to detect an effect that was not apparent in the case-control study. This study suggests that preventions, interventions and treatment for LBW not only be conducted by the current epidemiology approach but also by new modern geographic positioning analysis.

Abstract

Considering the abundance of potential pollutant sources along Bedog River, i.e. highly dense residential areas, agricultural lands, and industrial areas, this study aimed to quantitatively assess the Pollutant Load (PL) and Pollutant Carrying Capacity (PCC) of the river based on Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)parameters. The assessment employed a water quality modeling using Qual2Kw that provided not only the comprehensive values of PL and PCC but also the amount of PL that should be reduced to meet the PCC of every river segment. Water sampling and primary parameter measurement were conducted purposively in seven observation points, which included one point source and six non-point sources (river segments). River segments were determined according to the characteristics of land use and drainage system. Descriptive, graphic, and spatial analyses on water quality modeling show that the COD and BOD of Bedog River (2.24 km) indicates a small presence of PL compared to the river’s PCC. The PCC allows additional pollutant loads of 566.95 kg/day or 0.024 ton/hour BOD and 22,965.12 kg/day or 0.96 ton/hour COD. However, a high BOD in segments 3, 5, and 6 and a high COD in segment 5 imply the needs for PL reduction.

Abstract

The accurate information of forest cover change is important to measure the amount of carbon release and sink. The newly-available remote sensing based products and method such as Daichi Forest/Non-Forest (FNF), Global Forest Change (GFC) datasets and Semi-automatic Claslite systems offers the benefit to derive these information in a quick and simple manner. We measured the accuracy by constructing area-proportion error matrix from 388 random sample points and assessed the consistency analysis by looking at the spatial pattern of deforestation and regrowth from built-up area, roads, and rivers from 2010 – 2015 in Katingan district, Central Kalimantan. Accuracy assessment showed that those 3 datasets indicate low to medium accuracy level in which the highest accuracy was achieved by Claslite who produced 71 % ± 5 % of overall accuracy. The consistency analysis provides a similar spatial pattern of deforestation and regrowth measured from the road, river, and built-up area though their distance sensitivity are different one to another.

Abstract

This study attempts to predict future landslide occurrence at watershed scale and calculate the potency of landslide for each sub-watershed at Lompobatang Mountain. In order to produce landslide susceptibility map (LSM) using the statistical model on the watershed scale, we identified the landslide with landslide inventories that occurred in the past, and predict the prospective future landslide occurrence by correlating it with landslide causal factors. In this study, six parameters were used namely, distance from fault, slope, aspect, curvature, distance from river and land use. This research proposed the weight of evidence (WoE) model to produce a landslide susceptibility map. Success and predictive rate were also used to evaluate the accuracy by using Area under curve (AUC) of Receiver operating characteristic (ROC). The result is useful for land use planner and decision makers, in order to devise a strategy for disaster mitigation.

Abstract

This research was conducted in the surrounding areas of a university, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), which is administratively located in Tamantiro Village, Kasihan District, Bantul Regency, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It aims to formulate the regional management of the surrounding areas as they have been presenting the indications of urban sprawl. It used a qualitative method with research data obtained from in-depth interviews to 22 informants including governmental agencies (7 informants), academics (6 informants), entrepreneurs (5 informants), and villagers (4 informants). The informants were sampled using purposive sampling method. Data processing and analysis were conducted using qualitative descriptive method, i.e. (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) data conclusion. Data validation and reliability tests were conducted using source triangulation method. The results show that the stakeholders proposed various management strategies to improve the positive impacts and, at the same time, reduce the negative impacts of urban sprawl. These management strategies include (1) consistency in implementing spatial planning regulation, (2) spatial synergism in development planning, implementation, and monitoring, (3) assistance to the native people and the migrants, and (4) integration between the university and the village.

Abstract

This research carried out to study the cattle farming development based on the land capability in rural areas of the Merapi Volcanic slope of Sleman Regency Yogyakarta after eruption 2010. Samples taken were Glagaharjo village (Cangkringan Sub-District) as impacted area and Wonokerto village (Turi Sub-District) as unimpacted area. Survey method used were to land evaluation analysis supported by Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Materials used were Indonesian topographical basemap (RBI) in 1:25000 scale, IKONOS image [2015], land use map, landform map, and slope map as supple- ments. Potential analysis of land capability for cattle forage using the production unit in kg of TDN per AU. The result showed that based on the land capability class map, both villages had potential of carrying capacity for forage feed that could still be increased as much as 1,661.32 AU in Glagaharjo and 1,948.13 AU in Wo n o k e r t o

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the availability of necessary NAVAIDS required for safe approach and landing; highlight the accidents and incidents occurrences relating to the final approach amongst others. A combination of both primary data and secondary data were employed in the study and findingsshows that there are varying degree of fluctuations in number of aircraft using NAVAIDS in Nigeria from 2003 to 2013 and that there is strong and positive correlation (r< +0.97) in the relationship between the total aircraft and those that uses precision NAVAIDS for final approach and landing during that period. So also, there is strong positive correlation (r< 0.95) between total accidents and incidents and Approach-Landing accident and incidents between 1968 and 2012. The study recommends adequate precision approach NAVAIDS in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommendation and policy formulation on replacement of ageing and obsolete NAVAIDS in Nigerian airports among others.  Abstrak Penelitian ini menguji ketersediaan NAVAIDS yang diperlukan untuk pendekatan dan pendaratan yang aman, khususnya pada kecelakaan dan insiden yang berkaitan dengan pendekatan akhir diantara yang lain. Kombinasi data primer dan sekunder digunakan dalam penelitian dan menunjukkan bahwa ada berbagai tingkatan fluktuasi jumlah pesawat yang menggunakan NAVAIDS di Nigeria dari tahun 2003 sampai 2013 dan menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang kuat dan positif (r< +0,97) antara total pesawat dan ketelitian menggunakan NAVAIDS untuk pendekatan akhir dan pendaratan selama periode tersebut. Terdapat pula korelasi positif kuat (r< 0,95) antara total kecelakaan dan insiden dengan pendekatan-pendaratan kecelakan dan insiden antara 1968 dan 2012. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan ketelitian menggunakan NAVAIDS untuk pendekatan sesuai dengan Organisasi Penerbangan Sipil Internasional (ICAO) dan perumusan kebijakan  penggantian NAVAIDS yang usang dan tua di bandara Nigeria lainnya.
