Abstract

An inhibition effect of olive leaves extract in corrosion of copper alloy in hydrochloric acid solution was studied by means of potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inhibition efficiency has as inhibitor concentration increased but decreased with increase in temperature. Fallouts have depicted that the inhibition takes place throughout adsorbing inhibitor molecules on the metal surface that agrees with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Several thermodynamic parameters 14∆Gads." style="width: 41.25pt; height: 15pt;"> in addition to activation energy 14Ea" style="width: 22.5pt; height: 15pt;"> have been determined to explain the process of corrosion inhibition. The measurements of polarization indicated that olive leaves extract is of cathodic type. Abstract

Nanoparticles have been considered as one of the emerging and promising platforms to solve the problem of antibacterial resistance. The uses of plants in synthesis of nanoparticles are new method as its cheap, environmental friendly and easily synthesis. In this paper silver nanoparticles were prepared using the Quince extract to inhibit the viability of some species of bacteria, because of their unique properties and conspicuous therapeutic potential in treating a variety of diseases. UV/visible, SEM and IR spectroscopy have been used to identify the presence of AgNPs. The in vitro test which was used to evaluate the potency of nanoparticles as antibacterial agents, two different types of bacteria (E coli and Staphylococcus) has been tested against the Quince extract and AgNPs produced from the extract. The overall results shown that the more than 80-90% of both types of bacteria are non-resistant and eliminated compared with untreated bacteria. Thus quince extract is a good biomaterial for the synthesis of AgNPs as antibacterial agents.

Abstract

In this work the strain energy of tetrahedrane and its nitrogen substituted molecules were calculated by isodesmic reaction method according to DFT quantum chemical fashion, the used basis set was 6-31G/B3-LYP, in addition all structures were optimized by RM1 semi-empirical method. From the obtained data we estimate an empirical equation connect between strain energy of the molecule with charge functions represented by dipole moment of the molecule plus accumulated charge density involved within the tetrahedron frame plus the number of nitrogen atoms. The results indicate the charge spreading factors by polarization and 14n→σ*">  processes are the most important factors in decreasing the strain energy.Keywords: Tetrahedrane, Azaetrahedranes, Isodesmic reaction, Strain energy.      
Study the Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Purified Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) from Lactobacillus acidophilus Against Bacteria Isolated from Burn Wounds Noor Naeem Khwen

Abstract

The current study was investigated the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity potential of purified Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) from lactobacillus acidophilus against bacteria isolated from patients with Burn wounds that showed some resistance to antibiotics, the results of isolation and identification were showed the predominant bacteria was S. aureus 90% followed by P.aeruginosa 80%, B.subtilis 60%, S.hominis 50%, E coli 40%, P.mirabilis 40%, E.feacalis 40%. Furthermore some isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, P.aeruginosa 37.5%, S. hominis 100%, B. subtilis 16.6%, E.feacalis 50%, P.mirabilis 100%, However the other isolates showed sensitivity to Tetracycline such as S.aureus 44.4 %, E.coli 100%, B. subtilis 100 %. While Azithromycin and Novobiocin, Ampicillin, Cefotaxime, Erythromycin, Imipenem, Doxycycline were showed no effect toward isolates .Meanwhile Chloromphenicol, Amoxicillin /clavulanic acid, Gentamicin showed intermediate effects toward isolates. In addition EPSs showed a positive antibacterial activity against the isolates with different concentrations and the highest value recorded in 500 mg/ml concentration in each isolates but in 200mg/ml concentration in some isolates showed no inhibition zones. Finally anti biofilm activity of EPSs, the study noticed   EPSs showed more effective against biofilm formation withing 24 hr  more than  performed biofilm of isolates (after 24 hr). Furthermore MIC of antibiotic showed more effective  than MIC of EPSs in biofilm assay, but both MIC of antibiotic and EPSs were decreased the strength of biofim of isolates from strong biofilm and  moderate biofilm  formation to weak biofilm formation. The study was revealed depended on obtained results, purified EPSs from Lactobacillus acidophilus had antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against some bacteria isolated from burn wounds showed some resistance to antibiotics.Keywords: Extraction of Exopolysaccharides from lactobacillus acidophilus, Antibacteria, Antibiofilm activity of EPS, Burn wounds.

Abstract

Iraqi attapulgite (ATP) mineral clay was modified using anionic surfactant (Sodium dodecyl sulfate (ATP-SDS)) to improve its adsorption capacity for crystal violet (CV+) dye. Different techniques were used to characterize the ATP and ATP-SDS such as FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption properties of crystal violet (CV+) from aqueous solutions by ATP and ATP-SDS were further evaluated. Many parameters like adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH and temperatures were investigated and discussed. The adsorption kinetics were described using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The CV+ dye uptake process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic. The experimental data were examined using Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms models. The results showed better fit to Freundlich and Temkin models than Langmuir model. Thermodynamic values (∆Go, ∆Ho and ∆So) showed that adsorptions of CV+ onto ATP and ATP-SDS were endothermic, spontaneous and randomness increasing for both sorbents. The results indicate that this natural and modified Iraqi attapulgite could be employed as low-cost alternative for removal of cationic dye CV+ from wastewater.    Keywords: Adsorption, attapulgite, Sodium dodecyl sulfate, crystal violet, Thermodynamic parameters.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study was the effect of  water stress (5,10,15) days and interaction with spraying Aspirin (ASA) (0,5,10) mg.L-1 and brassinolide (BL) growth regulator (0,0.5,1) mg.L-1 on some biochemical and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants (Salicylic acid concentration, Carotene concentration, Phytosterols, Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) Enzyme Activity, Glutathione (GSH) concentration) and the and the Free radicals scavenging activity  for Caraway plant  Carum carvi, the experiment performed  with factorial Randomized Block Complete Design (RBCD), with three replicates and 81 experimental units the area of one of them 2m2.The Results Showed:The effect of   severe water stress for 15 days was negative effect and decreased the means of studying characters.Increasing in  the GPX activity and GSH means under Water stress and spraying with (Aspirin, Brassinolide)The means of free radicals scavenging activity decreased with water stress.The effect of aspirin and brassinolide was positive to increase of study characters with the influence of concentrations under water stress.The role of aspirin and brassinolide were positive to decrease of passive effect of water stress also the triple interaction between the severe stress at 14 days and then spraying the aspirin and hormone was positive to decrease the effect of severe stress.Keywords: (Water stress, Aspirin, Brassinolide, Carum carvi).

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is a multifactorial polymicrobial infection in which the bacteria play a fundamental role in its initiation and progression. Porphyromonas gingivalis has been implicated as a major etiological agent causing tooth loss. Aim of the study: This study was carried out for molecular identification and quantification of Porphyromonas gingivalis in subgingival plaque samples of severe chronic periodontitis (CP) patients and healthy controls and its association with interleukine-12 serum levels. Materials and Methods: Fifty one CP patients and 45 healthy controls with age ranged from (30-50) years old, were recruited. Periodontal status was assessed based on plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Real time-Polymerase chain reaction-SYBR green technique was used to quantify Porphyromonas gingivalis from extracted DNA of dental plaque samples, while enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was carried out to estimate the serum level of interleukin-12. Results: The present finding revealed that Porphyromonas gingivalis count was higher in the patients compared to the healthy controls and positively associated with all clinical parameters.  As well significant increase of interleukin-12 serum level was found to be associated with severe chronic periodontitis. Interestingly, positive significant correlation between bacterial count and serum interlukin-12 level was noticed. Conclusion: A quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction is sensitive and efficient method which permits to study specific organisms and their role in periodontal disease pathogenesis. The results of this study confirmed the earlier finding of Porphyromonas gingivalis present in significantly higher levels in CP patients. The positive association between bacterial count and interlukin-12 appear to be indicative of interactive relationship and may play a crucial role in pathogenesis of CP.Keywords: Periodontitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Real time-polymerase chain reaction, Interlukin-12, SYBR green.

Abstract

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene has several variants.The distribution of these polymorphisms may vary among different ethnic groups therefore in this paper; we seek to determine population frequencies of selected VDR polymorphisms (FokI rs2228570 and TaqI rs731236) in the healthy Iraqi population. Genotyping for two VDR single nucleotide polymorphism were performed for a total of sixty healthy individuals using Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). For FokI polymorphism, genotypes frequencies were 70%, 26.6% and 3.3% for FF, Ff and ff respectively and 50%, 45 % and 5% for TT, Tt and tt genotype for TaqI polymorphism respectively. As for the Allelic frequencies, the readings were 83.3 % opposed to 16.6 % for F and f alleles and 72.5 % opposed to 27.5 % for T and t alleles. In addition, the pattern regarding distribution of FokI and TaqI genotypes and alleles in the Iraqi Arab population was different from other ethnic groups. VDR polymorphisms data distribution among the healthy population in this work can be capitalized to investigate possible associations of VDR gene with different diseases. Further, anthropological comparisons can be attained using the same data set.Keywords: Vitamin D receptor, VDR polymorphism, VDR SNPs.

Abstract

Five health adult goats of Iraqi local breed of both sexes, were collected from Diyala Governorate weighing range between (6-8kg±40.11), and their ages were between (1-3) months. Ultrasound Scanner technique was used to study the aortic arch branches; ultrasonic examinations were done with a real-time B-Mode scanner supplied with a 7.5 MHz-linear array rectal transducer. All these goats were euthanized. The aortic arch of the goats is extended cranially, dorsally, and turn caudally situated below the vertebra columns at the level of the third intercostal space, above the pulmonary trunk. The aortic arch gives two branches in which the short branch called left-subclavian artery and large brachiocephalic trunk. Moreover, the brachiocephalic trunk is a great vessel cranial branch that yields two large branches; right-subclavian artery and bicarotid trunk which divided into left-common carotid artery and right-common carotid artery.Keywords: Anatomy, Aortic arch, Branches, Native goat, Ultrasonography.

Abstract

Chitosan is edible coating which is a safe, biodegradable and non-toxic substance derived from chitin shells of crustaceans. It’s considered as an antifungal agent that can control postharvest diseases. Cinnamic acid is a plant-derived soluble compound that impedes microbial growth. Acerola cherry (Malpighia emarginata) fruit is well known as one of the richest natural sources of ascorbic acid as well as its high concentration of health-relevant phytochemicals. It has a red color and highly perishable at complete maturity, resulting in serious quality losses during post-harvest. Purpose of this research demonstrated the efficacy of chitosan combined with cinnamid acid as edible coating to extend self-life of acelora cherry fruit. Finding results revealed that chitosan 1.5% + 2 mM cinnamid acid was appropriate to limit weight loss; maintain firmness, chlorophyll, and vitamin C content effectively. Microbial safety was also monitored on treated samples during 8 days of storage at ambient temperature. The combination of chitosan and cinnamic acid provides synergistic effect as a semi-permeable barrier to delay the respiration rate.Keywords: Acelora cherry, Chitosan, Cinnamid acid, Coating, Weight loss, Firmness, Chlorophyll, vitamin C.
