Abstract

The development of organic agriculture in Indonesia progresses slowly. The role of agricultural extension workers as farmer facilitators requires support from community opinion leaders. Opinion leaders have followers and influence within their communities, making their role crucial in accelerating the diffusion of innovation. This study aims to identify the characteristics and roles of opinion leaders by analyzing communication channels and the factors influencing the development of organic rice farming. The research employs a survey method with a questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. Data were gathered through interviews with 150 rice farmers and relevant stakeholders. In-depth interviews and observations were used to supplement the survey data. The research was conducted in East Kolaka Regency. Data were analyzed descriptively and using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM-PLS). Using diffusion theory, we identified 11 opinion leaders in the research area, characterized by their success in farming, experience, access to information, and openness. Opinion leaders maintain interpersonal relationships and are closely connected with other farmers. They serve as learning sources and consultation points for farmers in agricultural activities. Several factors influence the role of opinion leaders in the development of organic rice farming, including institutional characteristics, availability of demonstration plots, supporting factors, innovation characteristics, and the use of communication media. Therefore, agricultural extension workers should involve opinion leaders to accelerate the development of organic rice farming.

Abstract

Conversion of food land is so rampant in Baubau City that the Baubau City government is trying to curb it by establishing LP2B regulations. The efficacy of LP2B regulations needs to be studied, so this study is important. Farmers' commitment to not converting food crop land will be strong if farmers are aware of the LP2B regulations. In contrast to earlier research, this study focuses on farmer knowledge rather than only on methods or the assessment of LP2B regulations. Based on Baubau City Regional Regulation Number 6 of 2023 concerning the Protection of Sustainable Food Agricultural Land (LP2B), this study seeks to assess the extent of farmers' understanding of LP2B. This study was carried out in Kaisabu Baru Village, Sorawolio District, Baubau City, in February 2025. The research population consisted of 71 farmers, and all members of the population were used as research samples. The variables in this study are farmers' knowledge about LP2B. Data analysis techniques using rating scales, where farmers' knowledge was categorized as high (score range: 2.34-3.00), moderate (score range: 1.67-2.33), or low (score range: 1.00-1.66). The research results concluded that farmers' knowledge of LP2B in Kaisabu Baru Village, Baubau City, was in the low category, with an average score of 1.46%. The low level of farmers' knowledge about LP2B stems from the lack of explicit, comprehensive socialization. Practical recommendations that can be made to improve LP2B in general in Baubau City, namely, establishing technical guidelines for implementing LP2B and clearly re-mapping the location of LP2B land and the status of LP2B land ownership based on spatial data from satellite images and GIS software, because it concerns the effectiveness of providing LP2B incentives to farmers.

Abstract

Riau Province is one of Indonesia’s major centers of natural rubber production, with Kuantan Singingi Regency serving as its primary contributor. Since 2018, the regency has implemented an auction system for processed rubber (bokar) through the APKARKUSI institution to improve selling prices and reduce farmers’ dependence on intermediaries. However, the absence of a comprehensive evaluation regarding farmers’ satisfaction with APKARKUSI’s performance, coupled with the emerging trend of farmers reverting to conventional marketing systems, presents a critical issue that warrants further investigation. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of rubber farmers participating in the Bokar auction marketing system facilitated by APKARKUSI and to evaluate their satisfaction levels with the institution’s performance. The research was conducted in Kuantan Singingi Regency, which has the largest rubber plantation area in Riau Province and is the only regency to have consistently implemented the bokar auction system since 2018. Data were collected from 96 farmers selected through purposive sampling between December 2024 and January 2025. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI), and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). The findings reveal that most farmers have more than ten years of farming experience and possess at least a senior high school education, fostering openness to innovation and active participation in the auction system. The CSI score of 90.32%, classified as “very satisfied,” indicates that APKARKUSI’s performance aligns well with farmers’ expectations. IPA results indicate that marketing, information dissemination, and technological aspects fall within Quadrant II (maintain performance), while financing and agricultural machinery procurement fall within Quadrant I (top priority for improvement). These results provide valuable insights into strengthening institutional performance and can serve as a strategic framework for developing more sustainable marketing systems for other agricultural commodities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the structure, conduct, and performance (SCP) of shallot marketing in Tomia Timur District, Wakatobi Regency, Indonesia, an isolated island region with limited logistics. Using a descriptive approach, the research involved 30 shallot farmers and nine traders as respondents, selected through purposive, accidental, and snowball sampling methods. The results show an oligopsonistic market structure with high concentration at the trader level and competitive behavior among farmers. Traders dominated price-setting, while farmers acted as price takers. The marketing margin varied significantly across institutions, and the farmer's share was only 38.94%, below the fair threshold. The primary marketing obstacles were capital constraints and unfavorable pricing conditions. These findings highlight the need for market interventions in archipelagic agricultural zones to improve farmers' bargaining positions and marketing efficiency.

Abstract

Fresh strawberries are rich in nutrients but have a short shelf life. Freeze-drying technology extends their shelf stability and preserves sensory quality. As freeze-dried strawberries become more popular in Indonesia, understanding consumer preferences is key for product development and competitiveness. This study characterised the sensory attributes of commercial freeze-dried strawberries in Indonesia, comparing imported Thai and local Indonesian products. Sensory evaluation involved 58 untrained panelists using a 5-point hedonic scale for seven attributes: shape, colour, aroma, taste, hardness, aftertaste, and sourness. Data were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis nonparametric test to assess significant differences between samples. The results showed that the imported product from Thailand received the highest preference scores for taste (average score 4.17), texture (average score 4.29), aftertaste (average score 4.03), and sourness (average score 4.05). In contrast, local Indonesian products were preferred for aroma (average score 3.88), shape (average score 3.99), and colour (average score 4.12). The Kruskal–Wallis test indicated significant differences (Asymp.Sig<0,05) among samples for shape, colour, aroma, and texture attributes. These findings highlight distinct sensory preferences among Indonesian consumers and can serve as a reference for local producers to enhance product formulation, align sensory quality with market expectations, and strengthen competitiveness in the growing freeze-dried fruit industry.

Abstract

Robusta coffee ranks as a key commodity in the Kare District, significantly contributing to the area's economy. However, due to limited market access, farmers have yet to capitalize on the advantages of robusta coffee farming fully. This research aims to examine how different aspects of upgrading, namely product, process, channel, and functional upgrading, affect the value chain of Robusta coffee in the Kare Subdistrict. Data were collected from May to June 2025 through questionnaires, interviews, and a literature review, involving 50 farmers, one collector-trader, and 1 coffee processor, using purposive sampling. Respondents were selected based on their active participation and key roles in the coffee value chain, ensuring that the data reflect the practices and interactions of core actors. The analysis was conducted using SEM-PLS with WarpPLS version 8.0. The coffee value chain in Kare involves six actors: farmers, collectors, processors, coffee shops, retailers, and consumers, with interconnected relationships. This study examined the relationships among Product upgrading (0.930), process upgrading (0.959), functional upgrading (0.876), and channel upgrading (0.614). All variables demonstrate significant positive effects on the value chain (p < 0.001). These results suggest that, overall, an integrated upgrading strategy can enhance value addition, productivity, and farmers' welfare while strengthening the local competitiveness of Robusta coffee.

Abstract

The rapid growth of small and micro-scale beverage industries in Indonesia has positioned the herbal tea sector as a promising yet challenging field. However, herbal tea is currently less favored by the younger generation due to challenges in taste acceptance. To address this issue, HEXA CORP introduced product innovation through its Serenitea brand. Nevertheless, despite this innovation, sales volume declined by 32% between November 2024 and January 2025, while profit realization reached only 45% of the target, resulting in a negative deviation of 55%. The low consumer acceptance of herbal tea flavor innovation, particularly among the younger generation, became the main factor. This study applies the Design Thinking approach to explore product diversification opportunities and evaluate their impact on business profitability. The research was conducted at HEXA CORP’s business location in Jatinangor from February to June 2025 using a descriptive qualitative design guided by Design Thinking principles. The analysis revealed consumer journey issues at the onboarding, retention, and purchasing stages, primarily related to pricing and product attributes. Through ideation and prototyping, HEXA CORP developed affordable single-use herbal tea variants with improved flavors and packaging. Market testing identified middle-income students as the key consumer segment, with sales increasing by 71.43% and profitability rising by 11.51%. The resulting diversification strategy focused on packaging enhancement, product legality and certification, discount programs, and targeted marketing. These findings highlight the positive impact of product diversification on HEXA CORP’s business performance.

Abstract

Digital platforms offer consumers a convenient alternative for purchasing traditional foods from various regions. This study’s objective is to investigate the influence of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Perceived Risk (PR) on buying decisions for Indonesian traditional food. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 150 respondents who had previously purchased traditional foods through online stores. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to examine the data. The study’s results show that Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEU) have a positive and significant effect on Purchase Decision (PD), as indicated by T-statistic values greater than 1.960 at the 5% significance level, namely 3.284 for the PU variable and 3.386 for the PEU variable. Meanwhile, PR shows no statistically significant influence, as indicated by a T-statistic of 0.804, which falls short of the significance threshold of 1.960. This study contributes by focusing specifically on Indonesian traditional food products, offering novelty in online food-purchase research, and by integrating TAM and PR, which sets it apart from prior studies. In practice, the findings suggest that to provide a better shopping experience and encourage purchasing decisions, businesses should improve the usefulness and ease of use of their online platforms. A key limitation is the exclusive use of TAM without incorporating consumer behavior theories. Thus, future research is recommended to combine TAM with theories such as TPB and TRA to analyze consumer decision-making.

Abstract

Agroindustry plays a role in supporting local economic growth and job availability. Sukmojati Coffee is a local coffee agroindustry in Prigen District, Pasuruan, that processes local coffee beans typical of Mount Arjuna into ground coffee. In its development, Sukmojati Coffee faces increasingly tight competition in the coffee industry, with many competitors that cannot be avoided. To maintain a business amid competition, a marketing strategy is essential. This study aims to analyze Sukmojati Coffee's marketing strategy. This study was conducted from March to May 2025. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires completed by 100 respondents and in-depth interviews with a purposively selected informant. The collected data were analyzed using the Blue Ocean Strategy framework. The results of the study showed that Sukmojati Coffee obtained the highest scores on four factors, namely price (3.40), promotion (3.69), service (3.85), and ordering (3.71), and obtained the lowest scores on three factors, namely product (3.37), place (3.09), and store (2.82). Based on the strategy canvas and four-action framework, the marketing strategies that can be implemented are improving packaging performance, improving sales through marketplaces, improving store performance, and creating experiential marketing-based services. Three tiers of non-customers can be turned into customers through 3 marketing strategies: increasing product variety, creating 3-in-1 coffee products, and marketing Sukmojati Coffee as souvenir items. Based on the buyer utility map, Sukmojati Coffee created five new utilities and eliminated the pain points consumers had been facing. These results emphasize the importance of value innovation for Sukmojati Coffee consumers, both functionally and emotionally, to attract consumer attention and increase sales volume.

Abstract

Patchouli farming plays a crucial role in supporting the rural economy of Central Sulawesi; however, farmers’ welfare remains relatively low. This study aims to analyze the welfare level of patchouli farmers in Ampana Tete District, Tojo Una-Una Regency, using the Household Income Exchange Rate of Farmers (NTPRP) as an indicator of economic well-being. The research location was purposively selected because it is one of the major patchouli-producing areas in Central Sulawesi Province. A quantitative descriptive approach was used to describe the socio-economic conditions of farmers systematically. Data were collected through a census of 15 respondents using structured questionnaires and analyzed by comparing total household income and expenditure using the NTPRP formula. The results show that farmers’ annual household income ranged from IDR 22,500,000 to IDR 36,900,000, with an average of IDR 29,683,650. Of this, 40.54% originated from agricultural activities and 59.46% from non-agricultural sources such as trade, labor, and transportation services. Household expenditure ranged between IDR 38,000,000 and IDR 52,500,000 per year, averaging IDR 46,080,350, with non-food expenses dominating. The calculated NTPRP value of 0.64 indicates that household income is insufficient to meet total expenditure, meaning that farmers have not yet reached a prosperous living standard. This finding implies that diversification of non-agricultural income is essential for sustaining household economic stability. Therefore, local policymakers should design community empowerment programs and support small-scale enterprises to improve the economic resilience of patchouli farmers.
