English Education and Applied Linguistics Journal (EEAL Journal) is devoted to the applications of English education to problems of English language teaching and learning. Attention is paid to the learning and teaching of English languages as a second and foreign language in all countries. EEAL Journal requires articles to have a sound theoretical base and a visible practical application for a broad readership. Review articles are considered for publication if they deal with critical language learning and teaching issues with significant implications for practice and research. it is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to enhancing and disseminating scholarly work in the form of conceptual and research-based articles within the field of teaching English and English linguistics that have not been published or are under consideration elsewhere.

Abstract

Awareness of the existence of foreign cultures in Indonesia in various fields, especially in the field of education, that the influence of foreign cultures can have positive and negative effects on school students. What is meant by cultural awareness is Cultural Awareness: An introduction to the nuances of one's own culture and that of other cultures. Cultural Competence: The ability of individuals to use academic, experiential, and interpersonal skills to enhance their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities within, between, and between groups. This study aims to understand cultural awareness and the impact of foreign culture on students in schools. Qualitative methods used through observation and interviews and semi-structured observation. The participants in this study were six twelfth grade students consisting of three girls and three boys at a high school in Garut. Findings found in this study are the perceptions of students who study English Interlanguage books, namely that there are many learning cultures that can be imitated because they bring positive things and improve student learning values and can also motivate students to be more critical of cultural awareness.

Abstract

The Research Entitled "Transformation of H. P. Lovecraft Colour Out of Space Into Movie" is about ecranization study of short story into a movie Colour Out of Space. The objectives of the research is to find addition, reduction and changes of variations of the Colour Out of Space short story into a movie. The reason why the researcher chooses Colour Out of Spaces is because it has a unique story about the colour that never be seen by human's eye, the research find it interesting to see the ecranization thay happened between the short story and the movie, also there are still few researchers who raise ecranization in research. This research used descriptive qualitative,  and ecranization theory by Pamusuk Eneste to analyzed the addition, reduction and changes of variations. The researcher found there are addition, reduction, and changes of variations in the transfotmation of Colour Out of Space short story into a movie. There are addition, reduction, and changes of variations in plot and character. There are addition and reduction only for setting.  The research then found all of the addition, reduction and changes of variations influenced some changes in the intrinsic elements in the transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze what English skills are most needed by English students and how to structure the curriculum in English. This research method uses qualitative methods with case study research design. This research was conducted in Biology education at a university in Garut. The subjects of this study were 6 students from level 4 and 25 students from levels 1-4. This study used three instruments, namely interviews, analyzing documents, and questionnaires. The results of the study showed that reading skills that was English skill needed by Biology students, having these abilities could help and support their understanding in reading books, journals, and modules in English. Not only that, speaking skills were also needed by them to support future careers, especially in teaching. Second, mastery of vocabulary and grammar aspects is an aspect that Biology students feel is still lacking, so this has an impact on their speaking and reading processes. Therefore, learning English is still lacking if it is only taught one semester in the Biology Study Program.

Abstract

This study is aimed to (1), determine the role of teaching English. (2) prove that the use of lesson plan  give effect toward improvement of teacher’s quality in teaching, especially for teaching English. This study is a classroom action. The subject of this study is English teachers of SMA Negeri 5 Garut. Techniques of collecting datas are by using observation, interviews and documentations. The result of observation and interview with the English teachers in SMA Negeri 5 Garut state that all English teachers have arranged and used  the lesson plan, and obtained data, from the six English teachers who do not understand about the role of lesson plan are only 2 persons, while 4 other English teachers have understood the role of lesson plan in teaching English. But, in improving and implementation, it is constrained by several factors as I explain in the discussion. But, in practice, English teachers will effort with existing abilities and collaborate with  other teachers to keep contributing  the best services to students in accordance with syllabus and English teaching plan and teach based on the lesson plan that accordance to condition and student’s characters in the present and the future.So, from this study, we can take  a conclusion that a lesson plan  gives big effect in improving English teachers qualities especially teachers in SMA Negeri 5 Garut and others in general.

Abstract

In this pandemic era, blended learning model applied in school one of them in teaching EFL. Blended learning is a relatively new field that combines traditional teaching approaches with online learning. Other than that, students’ engagement is a key aspect in the improvement of getting to know in classroom. The purpose of this research is to find out students’ engagement in blended learning in EFL reading classroom from the teacher's point of view. This research guided by qualitative research approach with case study design. This research was conducted at one of junior high school in Garut. The participants in this research are three English teachers from that school. The data was collected through face-to-face and online interviews. To analyze the data of this research, researcher used inductive analysis data. The findings of this research based on teachers’ perception from participants are behavioral engagement of students in blended learning in EFL reading classroom have the same position between offline and online learning in classroom. Cognitive engagement of students in blended learning in EFL reading classroom more positive when offline learning than when online learning. Emotional engagement of students in blended learning in EFL reading classroom more positive when offline learning than when online learning. It means that in blended learning, student involvement is more likely to look good or positive during offline learning compared to online learning.
