Abstract

The phenomena of multilingualism influence how an individual constructs their identity, as language is one aspect of who they are. This study aims to investigate how five English college students view multilingualism and how it affects their sense of self. Semi-structured interviews were used as an instrument to collect the data, and it was found that their loyalty towards the local and national languages remains strong despite their exposure to the use of EFL in their daily lives. As multilingual speakers, the participants know the importance of maintaining their native language as their identity marker. Nonetheless, they agreed that being exposed to English changed their self-concept. These results demonstrate that appropriate sociocultural experience in language learning is essential.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of student engagement shown by students in the English Language Course. The second objective is to find out the factors that influence student engagement. This research was conducted on 8th grade students at Garut High School. To achieve these objectives, qualitative research with a case study design was used with observation and interview data collection techniques. The sample for this study consisted of 35 students. Out of all the participants, three participated in the interview. The results showed that there were three types of student engagement found, namely cognitive engagement, behavioral engagement, and affective engagement. It was found that the most dominant type was cognitive engagement. The results also show that the five factors presented by Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) influence student engagement in English language courses. The five factors are: school level, teacher support, peers, classroom structure, and task characteristics.

Abstract

This study delved into the realm of expressive speech acts within stand-up comedy, with a specific focus on Raditya Dika's "Cerita Cintaku" YouTube series. Drawing from John Searle's theoretical framework, which encompassed emotion-showing, mood-indicating, aesthetic judgment, and expressive vocabulary, the research explored the intricate dynamics of linguistic choices and audience responses. Employing a qualitative case study approach, two selected videos were analyzed to unravel the nuanced use of expressive speech acts. The findings shed light on Raditya Dika's comedic craft, emphasizing the interplay between expressive speech, emotional expression, and inherent humor. The abstract underscored the specificity of linguistic elements, provided insights into the chosen methodology, and articulated the interface between Searle's theory and the empirical findings. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of the role of expressive speech in stand-up comedy, offering a unique perspective on audience engagement and comedic impact.
