Abstract

Pegunungan Bintang is one of new regencies in Papua Province which was used to be part of Jayawijaya regency. In connection with the development of a new region there are many forest areas had been converted to infrastructure development. Those conversion has adverse impact on the presence of flora and fauna including orchids in the areas. Therefore this study was done to obtain the information about the diversity of orchids species at forest area of Oksibil District, Pegunungan Bintang, Papua. The study was conducted in seven of ten villages including Oksibil as the capital city of Pegunungan Bintang. The result showed that there are 9 genera consist of 23 species of both epiphytic and terrestrial orchids. Dendrobium and Agrostophyllum are more frequently found than others. Among them only  few species  has been collected by the local people without proper propagation. Key words: Orchids, diversity, Oksibil, Pegunungan Bintang.

Abstract

Skin secretions and venom from many species of amphibi (frogs and toads) and reptil (group of herpetofauna) from different famillies contain a wide range of unique physiological compounds with biological activity such as peptide, protein, non-protein, and enzyme. They are potent for drug development. The compounds, known as mode of action have practical application as pharmaceutical agents, diagnostic reagents or preparative tools. Peptides with potential anticancer, fibrinolityc, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic activity play important roles in human health. This review introduces roles of herpetofauna for drugs development, potential therapeutic values and their application in human health and disease.Key words: Herpetofauna, skin secretion, venom, drugs development, health.

Abstract

The characteristics  morphology and variations of shell can be used to reconstruct the sequence and phylogenetic of Thiaridae. 34 characters and 2 outgroups of Bellamya sp. from Papua and Sulawesi were used to observe 27 species Thiaridae. Phylogenetic Analysis Using Parsimony (PAUP Software Version 4.0., Swofford) and the neighbour joining cladogram were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship and to group the taxa of Thiaridae based on distribution areas of genera separately. The study indicated that  the taxon of Thiaridae can be groupped into 3 clades. Each clade depicts the taxon population based on their distribution areas in Batanta Island, Sorong, Manokwari, and Bintuni Gulf. All molded into one clade. Biak, Supiori, Serui, Wamena, Merauke, and Jayapura are formed one clade. Thiara, Terebia, and Melanoides are genera which formed a clade each genus. While Stenomelania molded into 3 clades. Morphology character and closed regionsof distribution tended to form ingroup clade and sister species.Key words: characters, phylogeni, Thiaridae, dan Papua.

Abstract

Study of isolate characterization of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner collected from soil was done at UNCEN Campus. The aims of the study were to explore the local isolate of B. thuringiensis and to study the toxicity of the isolates on larvae of Anopheles as a vector of malaria and filariasis deseases in Papua. Data was analized by Hadioetomo & Rusmana method (1977). The results showed that 383 colonies are relatively closed to B. thuringiensis whereas 290 of them are indicated as local isolates of B. thuringiensis. Based on toxicity detection on larvae of Anopheles found that 19 isolates have toxicities levels 50% or more. Among the 19 isolates 3 of them has 80%, 85% and 90% toxicity levels separately.Key words: Characterization, local isolate, B. thuringiensis, toxicity, and soil.

Abstract

Frugivorous birds or avian frugivores play important role in seed dispersal cycle and forest regeneration in forest ecosystem of Papua. Despite the high diversity of avian frugivores dwelling in Papuan rainforest, and the fact that this region faces  alarming rate of forest disturbance, little is known of their current presence in the lowland forest habitat. We surveyed the variety of frugivorous birds in three different habitats of lowland forest in Cyclop Mountains Nature Reserve and Nimbokrang District. The methods used were line and point transects and identification was done during the survey. A total of 36 frugivorous birds from eight families was found in both sites.  There were 33 species of 8 families in Nimbokrang forest and 16 species of 7 families were encountered in the Nature Reserve. The primary forest has high diversity of frugivorous birds compared to that in secondary forest and forest garden. It was found that several species of Family Columbidae such as Macropygia amboinensis, Ducula pinon dan Reindwaedtoena reinwardtii  moved and foraged along the forest edge and also visited degraded areas that still provided vegetation trees and perches. These findings might have importance for forest management and reforestation programmes in Papuan lowland forest.Key words: Frugivorous birds, diversity, lowland forest, Mountain Cyclops Nature Reserve, Nimbokrang.

Abstract

The aims of this study were determined the effects of Ochratoxin A (OTA) on growth of fetus tibia epiphyseal cartilage during organogenesis period. Twenty four pregnant mice were divided randomly into 4 groups of 6. Ochratoxin A was dissolved in sodium bicarbonateand administered orally on seventh to fourteenth days of gestation at dosage of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mg/kg bw, respectively. The remaining were used as control. The fetal tibia was taken after the 18 th day of pregnancy. The growth of tibia epiphyseal cartilages were observed histologically using Erlich’s Haematoxylin-Eosin Stain. The result of this study indicated that OTA caused decreased thickness of the rest zone, proliferative zone, maturation zone and calsification zone of the fetus tibial growth plate significantly. Key words: Ochratoxin A, tibia, cartilage, and thickness.
