Abstract

Sea cucumber is one of high value economic commodity due to not only having a fairly completed nutrition, but also used as the raw material for production of drugs, cosmetics and others. Therefore it becomes one of the highly potential export commodities. However, the target of catching sea cucumbers community intensively will give a negative impact on its sustainability. Sea cucumber has long been recognized and protected by the people in Padaido islands known as sasisen or sasi system. Although it has been conserved through sasisen system, but tends decline recently. This happen due to the high fishing activities by fisherman. Sea farming methods is a sea fisheries development concept in shallow waters such as the merger between aquaculture and capture fisheries by utilizing leading commodity in potential cultivation area. Sea farming is a system of utilization of marine ecosystem-based marine culture with the ultimate goal to improve the stock of fish (fish resources enhancement) to the sustainability of fisheries and other marine-based activities such as ecotourism. This paper will discuss the development opportunities of sea farming system that is integrated with the prevailing of local wisdom in Padaido Islands, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, namely sasisen. This system works in conserving sea cucumber resources and increasing incomes of local communities in Padaido island through the creation of alternative livelihoods specifically in sea cucumber cultivation. Therefore, these models and approaches can be considered to manage coastal and marine resources in a sustainable way in Padaido Islands, Biak Numfor Regency.Key words: Sea cucumber, sustainable management, sasisen, Padaido Islands.

Abstract

New Guinea island is known as a home of tremendous collection of orchids. It is certainly in excess of 2500 species,  which is 10-13% of the world’s orchids. Some of those species are well described, but some remained unclear. Therefore many more await to be discovered. The aim of this research is to invent orchid’s species in Habema areas, Wamena. Explorative methods were used in this study. The results showed that there were 19 species consist of Dendrobium 11 species, Agrostophyllum 2 species, Glomera 2 species, Liparis 1 species and Bulbophyllum 1 species. Two species remained unidentified. Among them only five species are terrestrial, and eleven are epiphytes. The altitude is 2900-3700 m above sea levels; the rain fall is 1900 mm/year, humidity 86-95 %, with temperature of 14,5–24 oC.Key words: Orchids, exploration, highland, Habema

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks and weakens the immune system. HIV infection causes a decrease in the number of Cluster Differentiation 4 (CD4) thereby increasing the progression of the disease and lead to high risk of opportunistic infections (OI). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between CD4 cell count with opportunistic infections in patients infected with HIV/AIDS. Analytical research methods using cross-sectional design, by taking medical records. The population in this study were 67 patients with HIV/AIDS in the VCT Clinic Dok II Hospital Jayapura 2014. Data were processed with the Chi Square test hypotheses. Based on the results of hypothesis testing of 67 patients, there were 21 people have opportunistic infections. Tuberculosis is an opportunistic infection that is most common (17.9%). Significance of the relationship seen in the low CD4 counts (< 350 cells/mm3) and found value of 0.02 (CI 95%) which indicates that there is a relationship if p<0.05. Conclusion: there is a relationship between CD4 cell count with opportunistic infections.Key words: CD4, opportunistic infection, HIV/AIDS, hospital.

Abstract

Utilization of mangrove forest is very important for people who are on the island of Liki. This study aims to determine the species composition of mangrove, mangrove vegetation structure and ecological values in the Liki Island District of Sarmi Kota, Sarmi Regency, Papua Province. The method used in this research is the transect method, by observation, interviews, documentation and literature review. The results of the study and analysis of the data showed the discovery of the species composition as much as 5 species  of 3 families with a density of 105 individuals/ha at tree level, 5 species of 3 families with a density of 124 individuals/ha at the level of the pole, 5 species of 3 families with a density of 149 people/ha at stake levels and 5 types of 3 families with a density of 109 individuals/ha at the seedling stage. The index value of the highest importance that kind of Bruguiera sexangula 78.02% at tree level. Mangrove species diversity at the level of the tree, sapling and seedling were low with H'<2.5. This research concludes that: 1). the composition of mangrove on Liki island consist of 5 species of 2). the low regeneration of mangroves causes the amount of density, frequency and dominance are relatively low; 3). need to increase the awareness of the public about the importance of the island of Liki themselves in maintaining the stability of mangrove land and sea conditions.Key words: vegetation analysis, mangrove species, Liki Island, Sarmi, Papua.

Abstract

Reproductive biology is one of prominent studies in biomedical research. Disruption in reproductive system becomes a major problem both in humans and animals. Preclinical study using animal model is therefore needed to initiate clinical studies and diagnostic purposes. Wistar rats are commonly used for research in male and female reproductive system due to their representation of mammal biological system. For that purpose, their reproductive age must be determined to meet the aim of studies. This research was carried out to provide reproductive profile of normal male Wistar rats from different ages, furthermore categorizing them into three checkpoints: young, subadult, and adult. Variables observed including: body mass, testosterone level, reproductive glands index, spermatogenesis, and sperm analysis. Results demonstrated that body mass, testosterone level, and reproductive glands index increase with age (significant at the age of 6–7 weeks). Spermatogenesis is initiated at the age of 7 weeks, characterized by significant increase in the number of spermatogenic cells which then maintained at subsequent ages. Spermatozoa has been produced at the age of 6 weeks, however still in low concentration, immotile, and not viable. The quantity and quality of sperm also increase with age. At the age of 8–9 weeks, sperm concentration significantly increases, progressive movement occurs, and viability is close to 100 %. In conclusion, rats aged 4–5 weeks can be categorized as young, sexually immature; rats aged 6–7 weeks are subadult, the reproductive system has well-developed (puberty) but spermatozoa are still immotile (infertile); rats aged 8–9 weeks are adult, sexually mature, and ready for mating, thus suitable as animal model for the study of reproductive system.Key words: Wistar rats, reproductive system, testosterone, spermatogenesis, spermatozoa.
