Abstract

The growing politicization of religion in contemporary Indonesia has increasingly transformed religious values into instruments of political contestation, thereby weakening the ethical function of religion, intensifying democratic polarization, and undermining social cohesion. While previous studies have examined pesantren as Islamic educational institutions, civil society actors, or promoters of religious moderation, the conceptual foundations of pesantren as a framework of Islamic Public Ethics remain theoretically underdeveloped. This study synthesizes scholarship on pesantren, Islamic political thought, and public religion to construct Pesantren Peace Theology as a framework of Islamic Public Ethics for negotiating the religion–politics nexus in contemporary Indonesia. Employing a qualitative conceptual research design, documentary sources were analyzed through document analysis and synthesized using Jaakkola's theory synthesis approach involving concept identification, conceptual integration, and theoretical proposition development. The study constructs Pesantren Peace Theology as an integrated framework comprising four ethical dimensions—Ethical Political Engagement, Moral Autonomy, Intergroup Mediation, and Non-Partisan Social Engagement—which collectively constitute an ethical mechanism through which pesantren negotiate the religion–politics nexus by preserving moral autonomy, fostering public trust, facilitating inclusive dialogue, and promoting the common good. The study contributes to scholarship on public religion and Islamic political thought by constructing Pesantren Peace Theology as a framework of Islamic Public Ethics that explains how religious institutions can participate in democratic politics without becoming instruments of partisan political contestation, thereby providing a conceptual foundation for strengthening democratic coexistence in Indonesia's plural public sphere.

Abstract

This article examines how Santri Waria represents the negotiation of religious subjectivity, dignity, and religious legitimacy among waria santri and what this negotiation reveals about humanistic Islam. Existing studies of Pesantren Waria al-Fatah have primarily approached the institution through social identity, religious space, education, embodiment, lived religion, and social precarity, while its implications for Islamic theological reflection have been examined less systematically. This study employs a qualitative critical-hermeneutic analysis of a published narrative-textual corpus, drawing primarily on Masthuriyah Sa’dan’s Santri Waria (2020). Religious subjectivity is used as the central analytical unit and examined through religious practice, identity, piety, moral reasoning, self-understanding, communal participation, and religious agency. These dimensions are interpreted in relation to religious space, mentorship, authority, legitimacy, and epistemic exclusion. Asghar Ali Engineer provides an ethical-emancipatory lens centered on dignity, justice, and liberation, while Mohammed Arkoun offers an epistemological lens to examine the boundaries of legitimate religious knowledge and the “unthought.” The analysis shows that the waria santri represented in the corpus negotiate Muslim belonging through religious practice, moral reasoning, communal participation, and claims to religious recognition rather than through institutional inclusion alone. The article argues that marginalized religious experience can function as a locus of theological questioning without replacing scripture, Islamic tradition, or established theological reasoning. It offers an empirically grounded account of transgender Muslim religious subjectivity and formulates Humanistic Islam as an ethical-epistemological analytical framework that connects dignity and agency through a critical examination of religious authority, legitimacy, and epistemic exclusion.

Abstract

This article examines how expanding social roles reconstruct the public religious identity of Madurese santri. Rather than measuring expansion by the number of occupations, it analyzes the qualitative shift from pesantren-centered piety to participation in education, community organizations, economic initiatives, politics, government, and digital publics. A qualitative single-case study was conducted at Pesantren Mambaul Ulum Bata-Bata in Madura in 2025. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with resident santri, alumni, and ustad, supported by participant observation and institutional documentation. The analysis integrates Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, capital, and field; Giddens' reflexive agency; Hall's identity as positioning; and Bhabha's in-between space. The findings demonstrate four connected movements: the translation of personal piety into public usefulness through khairu al-nasi anfa'uhum li-al-nasi; the conversion of religious knowledge, discipline, networks, and moral reputation into resources recognized in differentiated social fields; reflexive negotiation amid value conflict, competence demands, and public scrutiny; and the formation of an identity that is neither wholly traditional nor uncritically modern. The article conceptualizes this formation as a reflexive hybrid public identity: an institutionally rooted, field-responsive, and service-oriented identity produced through active positioning in public life. It also develops digital religious habitus to explain how pesantren dispositions are reformulated within platform-mediated religious communication.

Abstract

Management epistemology has been strongly shaped by positivist and empirical-analytical assumptions that emphasize measurement, objectivity, causal explanation, and empirical verification. Although these approaches contribute to methodological rigor, their epistemological limitations become apparent when organizational realities involve contextual, experiential, ethical, and purposive dimensions. Existing studies have increasingly applied maqasid al-shariah to organizational performance, decision-making, governance, sustainability, and Islamic financial institutions, yet its role in the construction of management knowledge remains insufficiently developed. This study aims to construct an integrative epistemological framework that positions maqasid al-shariah as a normative-teleological epistemic principle within management knowledge production. Using an integrative literature review and conceptual synthesis, the study examines management epistemology, positivist assumptions, Islamic epistemology, and maqasid-oriented management. The synthesis identifies three interconnected limitations: reductionism in representing organizational reality, value-free bias in separating empirical inquiry from normative questions, and measurement bias that restricts epistemic visibility. In response, the study proposes an Integrative Epistemological Model connecting revelation (naql), reason (‘aql), and empirical inquiry, with maqasid al-shariah providing normative-teleological orientation. Empirical inquiry remains essential for establishing empirical validity, while maqasid provides criteria for interpreting and evaluating knowledge in relation to justice, human dignity, public benefit (maslahah), and prevention of harm. The study contributes a conceptual framework for extending management epistemology beyond the assumption that empirical-analytical criteria alone exhaust the legitimate dimensions and purposes of management knowledge.
