ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

This study discusses symbolic violence in Ocean’s 8 movie. Ocean's 8 is an American heist comedy movie directed by Gary Ross and produced by Warner Bros  Picture 2018.  This study is aimed to analyze the issue of symbolic violence which is usually carried out by the dominant person (superior) to dominate people who don’t have power. This study is related to Pierre Bourdieu’s theory called symbolic violence. The method of this is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected through the process of watching, pausing, screen-shooting and note-taking, and classifying, and then the writer analyzed those data by using the theory of symbolic violence by Pierre Bourdieu. The results of the study show that symbolic violence is influenced by the presence of habitus and adequate capital to form the dominant habitus and symbolic power that produces symbolic violence. The forms of symbolic violence in this movie consist of euphemisms and sensory mechanisms are gift-giving, giving motivation and support, utilizing weaknesses owned by a person, and utilizing the position as a leader. All these forms of symbolic violence are carried out by the main character, Debbie as the team leader in the mission.

Abstract

This research employs the qualitative method in analyzing the object of the research. The data source was acquired from the movie written by Emma Donoghue 2014, and the secondary data in this research is acquired from script data in the Room novel by Emma Donoghue 2010. The source of data in this study comes from The Room Movie Script. The data collection technique used by the researcher is Searching and downloading, Reading, Identifying, Classifying, and coding Then the researcher performed data analysis techniques by Presenting the data, Describing the data, Analysis of the data, and Concluding. The researcher found 19 signs that come from Ma and Jack in this movie script. The findings revealed that two kinds of signs were found in the Room movie script including Signifier and Signified. In common signifier means a literary word where as signified means another meaning from a signifier that has more detail and a deep sign explanation. The Room movie script is represented many messages to the audience through its signs, especially for the reader. The researcher hopes the reader can understand every single meaning in this movie script, due reader can distinguish and easy to get the true meaning also it can be a source of research or guidance to act for daily life. Abstract

This research aims to find out how Account is described by 12 characters in Murder on the Orient Express Movie script on Justification and Excuses aspects. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as a research method. The source of data in this research was taken from primary data, namely the script for the film Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie and Michael Green which was taken from www.scripts.com and secondary data were taken from audiovisual in the film Murder on the Orient Express. The researcher collected data by downloading, reading, watching, and coding the data. The data analysis technique was done by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the results of this research. The results of this research indicate that account is actually applied by the antagonists to avoid being accused of being the killer of one of the train passengers. The researcher found 11 data containing elements of Account, which included aspects of Justification and Excuses. In Excuses, the accident aspect is the most dominant because this murder is based on past events, then the scapegoating aspect is accusing other people of doing the act so as not to be accused and the Defeasibility aspect is the last factor that causes Account’s behavior in this Movie script.

Abstract

This research discusses the repair of trust made by Facebook regarding the Cambridge Analytica Scandal based on the trust-repair discourse model established by Fuoli and Paradis. The objective of this research is to find out how the trust violation repaired by Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research was taken from the discourse uploaded by Mark Zuckerberg on March 22, 2018. The data was collected through reading intensively, identifying, and classifying based on communicative action models of Fuoli and Paradis. The data was analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting and concluding the data to answer the research question of this research. Researchers found that Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook adopted strategies such as neutralizing the negative and emphasizing the positive to improve the company's trust from three aspects, namely ability, integrity, and benevolence. Zuckerberg adopts a lot emphasize the positive strategy to improve trust from the aspect of ability. He mainly adopts the strategy of emphasizing the positive to show that they are capable in eliminating risks. Meanwhile, in terms of integrity and benevolence, Zuckerberg uses a combination of emphasize the positive and neutralize the negative strategy. By emphasizing the positive, Zuckerberg intends to build an honest image for the company. With neutralizing the negative, he tries to lessen the negative impact of the accusation. Through the use of this strategy Zuckerberg rebuilt and renegotiated the company's trust.

Abstract

This research is intended to describe the use of expressive and representative utterances Hotel Transylvania movie script. The research question of this research is, namely: how expressive and representative utterances are used in the Hotel Transylvania movie script. The research methodology used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research is Hotel Transylvania movie script and Hotel Transylvania movie. To collect the data the researcher used some steps: downloading the movie script and the movie, reading and watching repeatedly and comprehensively the movie and script, and identifying conversations that contain expressive and representative utterances found in Hotel Transylvania. The results of this research are described as follows: The researcher divided the data into two, the first is data expressive utterances and the second data is representative utterances. The researcher found 32 data of expressive utterances, they were welcome/greeting (9 data), thanking (7 data), condoling (3 data), deplore (5 data), and apologizing (8 data) and there are 20 data of representative utterances which included reporting (4 data), complaining (4 data), stating (5 data), concluding (3 data), and suggesting (4 data). The expressive utterance has more data because most of the characters express how they met and parted with someone at the hotel, thanking, saying sorry, expressing sympathy, expressing dislike, and congratulating.   Keywords: Speech Act, Illocutionary Act, Expressive, Representative

Abstract

The data of this research taken from  the lyrics of the song by Bruno Mars from several songs entitled Treasure, Just The Way You Are, It Will Rain and Marry You as an object. The researcher uses qualitative descriptive design because the data and research question models are descriptive. This research data collected through downloading, reading, identifying, coding and classifying. The results of this research shown that in the lyrics of the song by Bruno Mars, there are aspects of the mental process namely aspects of thinking, wanting, feeling and seeing and from these findings researcher found 11 data containing the aspects of mental processes, it can be seen from this research that aspects of thinking are more dominant, namely found 5 data, aspect of wanting 3 data, aspect of seeing 2 data and aspect of feeling only found 1 data. The mental process aspect is determined based on the senser, process and phenomenon which are implicit criteria to determining the use of the mental process aspects itself.
