Abstract

The Sorosuwan Palace played a major role for the kingdom of Banten in the period between the 16th century and the 19th century. In such a long period of time, the Sorosuwan Palace experienced ups and downs in its development. Based on a library research, it is known that the Sorosuwan Palace was renovated several times. This is most clearly seen in the differences found in the representations of the Sorosuwan Palace in the maps of Banten of 1596, of 1624 and of 1726. Outstanding changes can especially be seen in the maps of 1739, 1825, and 1900. The last three maps represent the Sorosuwan Palace as oblong in form with a bastion in each corner (which is similar to the present representation of the Keraton), while in the previous maps it is represented as a building with steps where it protrudes at the top, surrounded by other buildings. Field study reveals no indication that there had been two phases in the process of its building. This can be gathered from the remnants of the structure of the building in several places indicating that there had been a two-layered floor structure and an overlapped structure.

Abstract

From 9th to 10th of October 1740 the riot occurred in Batavia, which was followed by a terrible massacre of the Chinese ethnic. More than 10.000 Chinese were killed. This was the black page of the East Indies Companies history in Batavia. This paper revealed the background of the actors who had played an important role in the tragedy in Batavia in 1740. They were two nobleses groups that influenced the policy of the Republic of the Netherlands, namely the Orangi n (the people who agreed Orange family as their leader and the head of state) or the Prinsgezinden and the Staatgezinden as the other group who was more liberal and against the Orange family. Actually this massacre could be prevented if among those persons in the government had worked together and helped each other in resolving problems.

Abstract

This paper is a report of the findings of a reseach on minarets of old mosques in Sumatera and Jawa done by means of survey method and library study. Thirteen minarets of old mosques were observed and analyzed. The thirteen minarets show similarities in terms of form and style. There is a basic pattern of relation between the mosque and minarets in terms of layout. In terms of the number of the minarets, the mosques generally have one minaret each although some of them have two or even four. The main function of minaret in a mosque is a place to enunciate the call to prayer and a sign for a Muslim community. The research found other functions, namely minarets are used for marriage ceremony and for women to sit when listening to sermon. In terms of architectural style, influence of local culture, or European cultures (Portuguese and Dutch), of Middle Eastern cultures (Arab and Persian), and of South Asian culture (Indian).

Abstract

From an investigation on a number of Banten archives recorded in the archives list of The National Archives of the Republic Indonesia (ANRI), it is found that there are only two letters of the Sultan of Banten in ANRI. One letter bears the number Banten archive No. 18 and the other one in No. 61. The letter in archieve No. 18 is a receipt for a payment made by Abul Mafakhir Muhammad Aliudin to Steve Nicolaas Meijbaum which was signed on November 1st, 1781. Whereas the letter in archive No. 61 is a letter from Sultan Muhamad bin Sultan Muhamad Muhyiddin Zainulssalihin to the Governor General to the Dutch Indies, Herman Willem Daendels. In this paper, I will discuss both letters of the Sultans Banten and start with discussing the physical aspect of the letters, then followed by the composition of the letters, the scripts, and the language. The appendix contains a photocopy of both of letters, together with a transliteration of the text.
