The National Examination (NE) has been conducted for several times nation-wide. However, public debates always emerge over the importance of NE prior to the annual excecution of the examination. The government's policy to raise the passing standard under the pretext of improving the quality of the national education has commonly triggered a heated controversy. This paper discusses the NE from the perspectives of expectations, challenges and opportunities. It attempts to provide an objective picture as to the need to hold NE. As such, it puts the attempts to improve the quality of the national education through NE in a proportionately wider perspective.

This paper is based on a maritime archeological research that grounds itself on the preservation of archeological artefacts and maritime culture. Research on a number of drowned ships at the bottom of the sea and their cargo reveals the relationship between maritime culture and living regional communities. As a new paradigm in maritime archeology, its aim needs to be commensurate with the aim of the conservation efforts which is the empowerment of the communities themselves, and the communities outside of them, and needs to be oriented toward the interests of identity nurturance, development, and economy.

In the Universitets-Bibliotheek (UB) Leiden there is a pile of Banten letters that are bundled in Cod.Or. 2241 Illb. The 17th (No. 80) letter is a letter from Sultan Anom to the Governour General Willem Arnold Alting and Raad van Indie in Batavia. The content of the letter, which is undated and written in Javanese hanacaraka, is an approval of Sultan given to Raad van Indie for the building of a new house in Indramayu. Based on the codicological analysis of the shape, kind of paper, seal, scripts, and the language, it can be concluded that those letters in the budle were in fact not sent form Sultan Anom of Banten but form Sultan Kanoman of Cirebon.

Teaching Indonesian for Foreign Learners or Indonesian as a Foreign Language (IFL) is different from teaching Indonesian as a first language. The differences are due to the characteristics of the learners. IFL learners generally are adults who have language and cultural background and learning style different from those Indonesian learners have. These differences demand IFL teachers and instructors to prepare teaching-learning materials and the activities of the teaching-learning process in the classroom that are relevant to the learners' needs. Understanding the entry level behavior of the learners, the teaching materials, the teaching-learning approach, and the evalution process is of crucial importance in order to fulfill their needs. Learning needs analysis of IFL learners is also a prerequisite to developing adequate teaching-learning materials of IFL.

Teaching Indonesian in formal schools today is regarded as a challenge by many Indonesian teachers. In a country like Indonesia, in which language situation is very complex due to many languages and dialects (and also the fast-growing English usage in big cities), this phenomenon can be understood. Since the country's independence, there have been several curricula-one of them is Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi (competence-based curriculum), the newest being Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (Unit Level of Education-Based Curriculum). The latter seems to be regarded as the most ideal curriculum, because it can be adjusted to the regions' policy. The problems are that there are still Ujian Nasional (national examination) and that the 'readability' of the curriculum is still a big question for many teachers. This paper is focused on the elementary school teacher's strategies on applying the curriculum. This paper also discusses the curriculum, some principles on language learning, and the emergence of literary matters.
