Abstract

Food safety, especially the use of rhodamine B as a coloring agent, is an important public health issue. Public knowledge regarding the use of this substance is important, as it may influence consumption patterns. This research aims to determine the correlation between the level of market community knowledge and the use of rhodamine B in food products across six traditional markets on Bangka Belitung Island. Random surveys were conducted among buyers, traders, community groups, and market officers to assess market knowledge. To determine the rhodamine B content, selected samples, based on color, texture, and other risk factors, were tested using a rapid test kit. The survey results showed that the level of market community knowledge ranged from 59.38 – 100%. Of the 102 tests, 16 samples tested positive for rhodamine B. The positive samples were shrimp paste, apem, mutiara sago porridge, and ice cream cones. To determine the correlation, the two variables were tested using the Pearson correlation test in SPSS version 16. The test results showed a significance value of Sig. 0.078 > alpha 0.05 with a confidence level of 95%, which means no statistical correlation between the variables being compared. The study showed that a higher level of market community knowledge did not guarantee lower rhodamine B use, and vice versa. However, other factors that may influence rhodamine B use in food on Bangka Belitung Island warrant further study.

Abstract

The misuse of the dexamethasone–cyproheptadine HCl combination as an illegal weight-gain product has become a serious public health concern in Indonesia due to its widespread availability and associated health risks. Although both drugs may stimulate appetite and promote weight gain, their use outside approved medical indications can lead to obesity, metabolic disorders, and psychological complications. This study aimed to describe the profile of illegal products, analyze distribution trends and geographic patterns, identify distribution modus operandi, and evaluate law enforcement efforts undertaken by the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM). A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis of BPOM cyber patrol data from 2023–2024 with a qualitative case study of Case Number 28/Pid.Sus/2025/PN Btl investigated by BPOM investigators in Yogyakarta. The results identified 2,641 online storefronts selling these illegal products in 2024, representing a substantial increase compared with 2023. The products were commonly repackaged in unlabeled or improperly labeled white bottles and were primarily distributed in Java, particularly in DKI Jakarta, West Java, and East Java. The main distribution modus operandi involved diverting prescription-only medicines from legitimate supply chains, followed by repackaging and online marketing. Although BPOM has enforced Law Number 17 of 2023 on Health against offenders, law enforcement remains constrained by relatively lenient judicial sanctions and challenges in tracing the original sources of diverted medicines. Strengthening distribution control, improving inter-agency coordination, and implementing an effective pharmaceutical traceability system are recommended to prevent diversion and protect public health.

Abstract

To improve food safety in traditional markets, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has implemented the Community-Based Safe Food Market Program (Program Pasar Pangan Aman Berbasis Komunitas). The success of this program depends on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of market stakeholders. This study aimed to develop and validate an evaluation instrument to assess these aspects and to apply it in markets where the program has been implemented. A questionnaire was developed through expert consultation, item validity and reliability testing, and final refinement. Validity testing involved 30 respondents from three traditional markets across Indonesia. The final instrument consisted of 30 items for market officers, 30 items for food vendors, and 20 items for market visitors, demonstrating acceptable validity and moderate to high reliability. The vendor questionnaire was administered using a total sampling approach. Survey results indicated that food vendors had good knowledge (8.0±1.04 out of 10), positive attitudes (41.00±2.04 out of 50), and appropriate food safety behaviors (42.64±3.25 out of 50). Correlation analysis revealed that only the length of time engaged in food vending was significantly associated with vendors’ knowledge, whereas no significant relationships were found for other characteristics. The findings indicate that the developed instrument is valid and reliable for assessing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to food safety among traditional market communities. This instrument can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Community-Based Safe Food Market Program and to support evidence-based monitoring and continuous improvement of food safety interventions in traditional markets throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

Herbal Medicines (OBA) are widely used as complementary or alternative treatments globally. Their popularity stems from the perception that they are natural, accessible, and have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs. However, high demand raises concerns regarding heavy metal contamination (As, Cd, Pb, Hg), which can occur through soil absorption, manufacturing, or intentional addition. This study analyzed Mercury (Hg) levels in solid OBA across Bali. Samples collected from various traditional medicine depots were tested using microwave digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results showed that 108 out of 214 samples—primarily in powder form—contained detectable Mercury. Nevertheless, these concentrations remained below official safety thresholds, with results ranging from 0.02 to 0.16 ppm. Based on the risk evaluation through the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) indicator with a range of results of 2.86 x 10-6 - 2.29 x 10-5, Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) of 0.01 - 0.08, and Cancer Risk (CR), with a value of 2.43 x 10-11 - 1.94 x 10-10 it can be concluded that the OBA solid dosage forms sampled in Bali Province in 2025 are safe for consumption.

Abstract

To meet the publics’ needs for the safety and quality of processed food, the Directorate of Processed Food Standardization provides public services for assessing safety, quality, nutrition, benefits, and labeling; the safety of genetically modified organism (GMO) products; and approving clinical tests. The public service quality achievement can be measured using a Public Satisfaction Survey among stakeholders, in the form of an index that explains the expectations and performance of public services received by customers. This research was conducted to determine the variables related to customer satisfaction regarding assessment service completion time, assessed through the ease of fulfilling requirements, the ease of service procedures, and the availability of supporting applications. The research method used is quantitative, with a cross-sectional design. The data used comes from the Public Satisfaction Survey (SKM) of business actors who received assessment services in 2023 and 2024. The research was based on the perceptions of 41 respondents, comprising 9 males (22%) and 32 females (78%). The research results show that ease of service, procedural requirements, and application availability are related to customer satisfaction with the time to complete the assessment service (sig. < 0.05).To improve services, several steps can be considered, such as improving the stability of the system infrastructure, improving the existing requirements, procedures, and systems. Conduct outreach, technical guidance, and coaching clinics for applicants. Furthermore, it is necessary to improve the technical competence of evaluators in order to reformulate and simplify the documents needed.

Abstract

Food safety issues in traditional markets remain a systemic challenge due to the illegal use of hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde and textile dyes, particularly in coastal areas with extensive seafood distribution chains. This study aims to analyze the trends in hazardous substance prevalence and evaluate the effectiveness of the Community-Based Safe Food Market Program (PPABK) in Cilacap Regency, focusing on Tanjungsari Market. The methodology employed is a descriptive-analytical study design with a community intervention approach conducted from May to July 2025. Primary data were collected through incidental sampling (n=39) and tested using PPPOMN-verified rapid test kits. Research findings revealed a high pre-intervention prevalence of hazardous substances in the Cilacap region at 40.6%. During the intervention process, a detection paradox occurred, where prevalence increased from 16.7% to 40.0% due to the enhanced capacity of cadres in performing targeted sampling. However, in the final monitoring and evaluation phase, the prevalence significantly dropped to 0%. The study concludes that strengthening the resilience of market cadres as internal supervisors effectively changes trader behavior and creates independent oversight. The proposed policy recommendation is the replication of the PPABK model in other traditional markets, supported by the integration of local government budgets to ensure the sustainable availability of independent testing facilities.
