Journal of Language, Literature, Social and Cultural Studies (JLLSCS) is an international peer reviewed and open access journal in the studies of language, literature, social and culture. The aim is to publish conceptual and research articles that explore the application of any language studies, literature studies, social studies and cultural studies, including in teaching and the everyday experience of language in education. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an opportunity for the education sector, particularly in higher education, to reconsider how they adapt to the post pandemic era. However, several challenges emerge, particularly regarding the communication between teachers and students. This study was undertaken to find out how teachers communicate with students and the communication challenges that they encountered in the post-pandemic period. A qualitative research approach was applied throughout the study, specifically the utilization of the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. The data gathered from nineteen (19) teachers was analyzed through thematic analysis. The coding cycle used was vivo coding, followed by eclectic coding and axial coding for refining codes. Responses revealed five specific challenges that was faced by the teachers: (1) pandemic impact on students’ attitudes and learning (2) language and communication barriers, (3) technological challenges in education, (4) lack of infrastructures building gaps in classroom environment, and (5) teachers’ preparedness and effectiveness. It is significant that teachers know how to apply different strategies in order to counter communication challenges that they may face. Few recommendations to improve the findings of the study are discussed at the end of this paper.

Abstract

India has been the land of diverse cultures and religions over a long period of time. The adherents to different religions have been coexisting peacefully and sharing both the glories and the downfalls together. Though there is a long and well-established tradition of religious engagement and debate in India, the process of religious dialogue, particularly Hindu-Muslim dialogue, has yet to find a cohesive expression and a stable foundation on which to stand. Who isn’t aware about the riots, violence and killings on the name of religion in the history of India? The hatred and the disbelief against Muslims have dealt a huge blow for the unity and diversity of India. However, there is still hope for religious dialogue in India, as the country has been a pluralist culture for centuries and the people have lived through religious tolerance and coexistence. The only solution to this would be interfaith dialogue which is mandatory if not dynamic for everyone to have the understanding of different religions or belief systems. In this article, I would start with a brief introduction about interfaith dialogue, its history in India and then discuss in detail the need, importance and contemporary challenges of interfaith dialogue in India. This would help in understanding the dialogue between Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs, as well as to eliminate prejudices and misunderstandings regarding each other's faiths. It would also assist in the achievement of common goals such as the establishment of justice and world peace, the protection of human rights, and the promotion of moral values.

Abstract

The current research dealt with the study of the impact of changing the Personal Status Law on the number of family lawsuits "divorce and divorce lawsuits as a model", by monitoring thirty years, which is the period from 1990 to 2020 depending on the data of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics through the annual bulletin Marriage and divorce, as this period indicates the change of the Personal Status Law for more than five amendments between a total amendment to the law, and a partial amendment of some articles, and the current study has found a relationship between Changing the Personal Status Law and between the increasing number of family lawsuits, as divorce and divorce lawsuits increased during the study period affected by the change in the Personal Status Law during that period, which necessitates the need for deliberation in amending personal status laws to take into account the preservation of the family entity from disintegration.

Abstract

The use of blended learning, a style of education that combines conventional classroom teaching with online learning, is one way in which it is feasible to deliver a course and build a favorable learning environment effectively. A descriptive method by reviewing and critical evaluation of the previously published articles has been used to conduct this research on Blended learning, which combines the conventional in-class education students are used to with the resources they may access online in order to accelerate the learning process and increase students' chances of academic achievement. Aim: This article aims to study the potential benefits of blended learning for students in helping them achieve their academic goals. Many other elements may be considered when creating a practical blended course.  When technology is used in the classroom, students have the opportunity to benefit from having quick access to a wide variety of resources, flexibility, effective pedagogy, learner autonomy, an enjoyable atmosphere for learning, involvement with the course materials, immediate feedback, self-evaluation, and additional time to interact with teachers and other students. Overall, adaptable and accessible blended learning is a successful teaching method. The students' motivation and success in the course may also be increased.

Abstract

Since the publication of Halliday and Hasan’s book Cohesion in English (1976), a few studies have been done on cohesion in short stories (Sari, 2016; Abed, 2016; Khaingo, 2016). However, to the best of our knowledge, not one has examined cohesion in Ali Douagi’s Sleepless Nights (1969) and Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery (1948). This paper tries to fill this gap by examining and comparing the use of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion in these two short stories. Using a qualitative and descriptive approach, this study identifies the grammatical and lexical cohesive devices utilized in the two short stories. The results show that both short stories utilize grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion to build a text that “hangs together” as a consistent whole. However, a few differences between the two short stories can be observed: whereas Sleepless Nights uses the four types of grammatical cohesion (ellipsis, conjunction, reference and substitution), The Lottery is found to utilize ellipsis, conjunction and reference only. Also, a slight difference related to lexical cohesion can be observed: in The Lottery, text parts are found to be lexically tied through repetition, near-synonymy, hyponymy and antonymy. Sleepless Nights, however, utilizes hyponymy, repetition, synonymy, and antonymy. The results confirm the claim that cohesion is an integral element for any type of discourse, including short stories.

Abstract

The community of the trans-gendered or the gender diverse or the gender nonbinary has been the cause of many debates in recent times over their claim of equal rights of existence in India. While several first world countries have taken or are in the course of taking adequate steps to ensure their inclusion among the general masses, India despite its long history of accommodation and tolerance has fallen behind. This is largely in lieu of the prevalent discourse classifying any form of sexuality and gender that does not conform to the heteronormative gender binary as unnatural and a product of westernisation. This paper endeavours to elucidate and scrutinize the Queer and specifically Trans elements embedded within Indian Mythologies, as manifested in the Veda, Purana, Dharma-Shastra, Kama-shastra, Natyashastra, and numerous other sacred texts. By doing so, it attempts to subvert the prevailing narrative that enforces their exclusion. In addition to that, it provides a comprehensive survey of gender fluidity as depicted in Indian mythologies and ancient texts, thereby illuminating the obscured heritage of progressive advancements in gender studies within the Indian context. Moreover, it underscores the contrived essence and artificial construct of the gender binary, while emphasizing the futility of steadfastly adhering to its purported "naturalness".

Abstract

The phenomenon of humour in every sphere of one's life has a vital role. This project involves the element of humour in EFL classes. The purpose to conduct this research is to investigate how much is the application of humor important, its role, and effectiveness in EFL classes. Mix method/ Qualitative and quantitative types of research have been used for the study. To collect the data, survey forms and questionnaires were used. For data analysis of the collected data, the application namely SPSS was used by the researchers. So the result shows that it is a good technique to apply the mechanism of humour in teaching, especially in foreign language classes.

Abstract

This research uses document review and literature review methods. The document review was carried out by analyzing official documents related to the Independent Curriculum, such as Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Regulation Number 34 of 2022 concerning National Standards for Junior High School Education and Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Number 35 of 2022 concerning National High School Education Standards. The literature review was carried out by analyzing previous research writings about the Independent Curriculum, student-centred learning, and independent learning. The results of the analysis show that the Independent Curriculum and independent learning are closely related. The Independent Curriculum is an effort to realize independent learning. This can be seen from several main characteristics of the Independent Curriculum, such as: (a Focus on essential material that can be studied in depth. (b) Providing freedom to teachers and schools in developing curriculum and learning. (c) Accommodating students' needs and interests. Centred learning on students is one of the strategies that can be used to implement the Merdeka Curriculum. Student-centred learning emphasizes the active role of students in the learning process. Students are not only objects of learning, but also learning subjects who have an important role in determining the direction of learning. Implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and independent learning requires a change in the learning paradigm. Teachers must shift from their role as transmitters of information to facilitators of learning. Teachers must be able to create a learning environment that supports students to learn actively and independently.

Abstract

Every teacher needs to develop their vocal skills through continual practice and voice quality improvement. Students will draw judgments and assumptions about the teacher's attitude toward them, as well as the knowledge and concepts that he or she is imparting, based on the tones of the teacher's voice. The purpose of this study was to explore students’ perception on teachers’ vocal quality in a classroom setting. With a qualitative research design, the current study employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. The participants of the study are composed of 26 students (9 males) (17 females) under the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. The collection of data was done through a face-to-face, semi-structured interview with audio recording. With the help of thematic analysis, the researchers come up with these themes: (1) the instructional tone or manner and emotional expression of the teachers; (2) teachers’ emphasis and motivation on teaching; (3) engagement and voice characteristics of teachers; (4) teachers’ effectiveness and students’ engagement in the classroom; (5) challenges faced by students; (6) comprehensibility and academic performance of students; and (7) learning and knowledge acquisition of students. The findings revealed that the vocal quality of teachers have an impact on how engaged their students are in the learning process, which in turn helps them achieve academically.

Abstract

The importance of factors in the educational environment is very important to build up a future career. Especially among children environmental interaction makes them learn behaviour of the society. The aim of the study is to show the benefits of cross-class interactions and co-ed education among children in Indian schools. A detailed and critical analysis of the factors responsible for the development of children's education is represented. This includes the reflection of cross-class interactions and co-ed education among the children. It also relates to theory for its practical implementation and gets the best outcome. The presentation of the factors responsible for cross-class interactions and co-ed education among children in Indian schools is collected from the primary source. This consists of a survey among 70 responders of the society. The collection of the information is represented and analyzed through the statistical analyzing tool SPSS. The extracted data by the statistical tool makes the presentation a major amount of responders' opinions based on the relativity of this analysis. It shows all the benefits of the factors implemented for cross-class interactions and co-ed education among the children in Indian schools.
